All-electric Genesis eG80 caught in new spy photos
Tue, Aug 18 2020Spies have caught what appears to be an electrified variant of the new Genesis G80 luxury sedan testing at the Nurburgring. Hyundai's luxury subsidiary has been hard at work re-inventing itself, and it appears a midsize EV dubbed "eG80" is the brand's next step. We don't have any serious hints as to what is going on under this prototype's sheetmetal, but our spies said there was no engine noise, which is our first clue. The remaining indicators are visual — the absence of any exhaust outlets (or a lower rear bumper cover that would eventually accommodate finishers), the solid grille and the lack of a visible cut-out for a gas cap. The last item there could go either way, as there also doesn't appear to be a cut-out for a charging port, but there appear to be some electrical tape shenanigans going on there on the driver's side front fender, which may be keeping a flap of vinyl in place to disguise the door covering the receptacle. Our spies also note that the bumper designs appear to be unique to this variant. Genesis is also expected to get a variant of the small Hyundai 45 electric crossover. In fact, this eG80 prototype is likely running a dual-motor version of the 45's powertrain, which is itself expected to be adapted from the 201-horsepower system utilized in the Hyundai Kona Electric. Genesis has stepped things up in terms of its interior quality and technology The huge, standard 14.5-inch touchscreen with iPod-like secondary controller stands out in particular for being feature-rich and user-friendly, which is a rarity in luxury cars. There's also tons of space in the comfy back seat, which is a big part of buying a big luxury sedan like the G80. The eG80 should further cement the big sedan's role in the future of Genesis. While Genesis has been hard at work developing crossovers in order to stay competitive, the company appears to remain committed to sedans. It's even one of the few that still offers a manual transmission in its entry-level G70 model, though that option is not long for this world. Related Video:   Â
2021 Genesis G80 Review | Bland no more
Tue, Aug 11 2020Luxury sedans certainly aren't what they used to be in the automotive pantheon, largely supplanted in the buying public's eyes by SUVs. However, a sleek and elegant sedan can still turn heads, and with the 2021 Genesis G80, we think that some swiveling is bound to occur. Though its shape is certainly evocative of the Audi A7, that's not really a bad thing, and there are more than enough unique details to make it something other than a copycat. It's also the first G80 you can't describe as bland, as it presents more reasons than just a low price and long warranty for folks to consider it instead of established segments entries like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. That's particularly the case inside, where Genesis has really stepped things up in terms of quality, technology and a unique design that should definitely stand out during back-to-back test drives of various luxury sedans. It looks and feels special inside. It really looks sensational. Unique, too, which is definitely something that matters in this high-priced segment. There are different two-tone schemes available (see photo gallery at the top of the page), which may not be as distinctive, but are still quite classy and memorable. Quality throughout is excellent, with many surfaces covered in a convincing leather substitute, plus that opulent stretch of wood across the dash and on the center console.

2021 Genesis GV80 Review | Price, features, safety ratings, pictures
Tue, Aug 11 2020The 2021 Genesis GV80 is the newest model from the newest luxury brand, a midsize crossover with a grand grille, a plush interior and more than a whiff of Bentley in its proportions and detailing. Considering that Genesis is to Hyundai what Lexus is to Toyota, it would seem logical that the GV80 is just a tarted up Palisade, but that actually isn't the case. Instead, it shares its rear-wheel-drive platform with the also-new G80 sedan, which graces the GV80 with more elegant long-hood/short-overhang proportions and grants it superior driving dynamics. It also makes the GV80 a more convincing answer to comparably laid out luxury SUVs, including the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and Lincoln Aviator, and quite frankly makes it harder to dismiss. And after getting time behind the 2021 GV80's unusual monospoke wheel, it would be a mistake to dismiss it. Although Genesis is a new brand, Hyundai has been churning out dependable, high-quality cars for years. People dismissed Lexus in the beginning, too. The GV80 isn't just festooned with the requisite amount of leather and fancy features, it's cabin is uniquely designed, slathered in rich details and comes standard with an abundance of technology that's actually user friendly. Space inside is less than you'll find in bigger, pricier luxury SUVs (BMW X7, Mercedes GLS), as well as big non-luxury crossovers like the Palisade, but it should be more than enough for those also considering the similarly sized X5, GLE, Aviator or perhaps the smaller Lexus RX. The driving experience isn't quite as memorable, but the ride and handling balance are appropriately sophisticated, the steering is precise and both engine choice offer more than enough power for such a large luxury vehicle. It definitely fall more on the comfortable-yet-controlled end of the spectrum with Mercedes and Range Rover. While Genesis has been around for a few years now, its really the GV80 that stands the best chance of getting noticed by luxury buyers who are used to looking to Germany or Japan. SUVs are obviously what most people want and in the GV80, they'll find a good one.  What's new for 2021? The GV80 is an all-new model. 2021 Genesis GV80 interior View 39 Photos What are the GV80 interior and in-car technology like? The GV80 cabin is just as impressive in person as it is in pictures. It's tastefully unique and genuinely luxurious.
2021 Genesis G80 gets significant fuel economy boost
Wed, Aug 5 2020The 2021 Genesis G80 midsize luxury sedan is looking quite appealing. Not only is it gorgeous, it's priced competitively and has cool technology. Now we can also add the fact that it's more efficient than its predecessor without really sacrificing performance. The base engine is now a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, down 11 hp but up 18 lb-ft of torque to the previous car's naturally aspirated V6. This new four-cylinder returns 23 mpg city, 32 highway and 26 combined with rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive brings those numbers down to 22/30/25 mpg. The old rear-drive V6 only got numbers of 18/26/21 mpg with AWD lowering them by 1 mpg combined. That's a huge year-to-year difference. The new optional engine is a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, as opposed to the twin-turbo 3.3-liter in the old car. The new engine makes 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, increases of 10 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy for the new engine with rear-wheel drive is 19 mpg city, 27 highway and 21 combined, and all-wheel drive drops those numbers to 18/26/20. That represents only a slight improvement over its predecessor: 1 mpg combined better with RWD and the same with AWD. The 420-hp V8 has been dropped altogether. Unsurprisingly, it was the least efficient of the old G80's engines with combined fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg with RWD and 18 mpg with AWD. Related Video:  Â
Rumored Genesis G70 wagon is real, caught for first time in spy shots
Mon, Jul 27 2020A few months ago, Genesis revealed it was looking at the possibility of offering a Genesis G70 wagon or shooting brake variant. It seems that possibility will become a reality, since one of our spy photographers caught just such a prototype out testing on the road. Unsurprisingly, it builds off of the refreshed model we've spied in the past. What's a bit unexpected is that it may have more of a coupe-like fastback roofline than a traditional wagon. Looking at the car in profile, we can see that the rear door glass is distinctly different from the sedan. The area where the window sill starts rising does so later than on the sedan, to have more glass area. And with that shallower angle, it would seem like the glass would extend past the door and farther upward like on the GV80 crossover, our nearest reference for a long-roof Genesis. But instead, the glass still ends at the C-pillar. Further supporting the idea that the G70 wagon will have a low, fastback roof is that there's quite a bit of false bodywork at the back, particularly around the rear window where it looks like a box was strapped to the rear hatch to get it to stick out farther and taller. Besides the unique rear roof and door sections, this G70 wagon looks very much like the refreshed sedans we've seen in past spy shots. The nose adopts the pentagon-shaped grille shared with the crossovers and redesigned larger sedans. The headlights and taillights have the split lighting elements like those other models, too. Of course, now that we know there's definitely some kind of long-roof G70 variant, the question is, will we get it here? There's certainly a possibility, but we also don't want to get your hopes up. In this size class, there are a couple of wagons proving that it's not impossible, including the Volvo V60 and the Audi A4 Allroad. That's not to say wagons are actually popular, though, and Genesis is already dropping the unpopular manual. Not only that, but it will have a GV70 crossover to fill the practical small luxury gap. If this G70 is more of a coupe-like vehicle, though, we'd say odds are a little better, since that segment has been booming with the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe in the same class, as well as various coupe-like Mercedes models spanning a few size segments. We'll simply have to wait and see. And since the G70 is mainly being refreshed, rather than fully redesigned, we should know in a year or so. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party.
Genesis GV80 SUV, new G80 sedan launches delayed
Sat, Jul 25 2020For Genesis, which launched with an all-sedan lineup, the arrival of its GV80 SUV has been eagerly anticipated, to say the least. When the GV80 made its U.S. debut during the Super Bowl and was greeted with a warm reception, that must have served to ratchet up that eagerness on the part of Genesis and its dealers still further. Well, now they're going to have to wait some more. The GV80 was to arrive in showrooms this summer, but the launch has been delayed until this fall. The same goes for the redesigned G80 sedan. As with so many business disruptions, you can blame the coronavirus. The virus shut down the EPA's testing facility in Ann Arbor, Mich., and according to a report in Automotive News, that has delayed certification of the new models, both of which are built in South Korea. Earlier this year, production of the GV80 was suspended due to coronavirus-related parts shortages. We already know quite a bit about the GV80. It's sized close to the BMW X5 and is powered by a choice of turbocharged engines: a 300-hp 2.5-liter inline-four or a 3.5-liter V6 good for 370 horsepower. Dramatic styling inside and out sets a template for future Genesis models, and features include a 14.5" central touchscreen and a next-generation version of Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist. We even know pricing, which ranges from $49,925 to $71,975. The new G80 sedan is less critical to the brand's fortunes, although it looks equally impressive. The third-generation G80 features standout styling, and the same choice of engines as the GV80. Again, pricing has been released and starts at $48,725 for the 2.5T and $60,125 for the 3.5T. Automotive News quotes Genesis, which claims to have 14,500 reservations for the two models. Hold on tight, everybody. Related video:
Genesis G70 loses its manual transmission after the 2021 model year
Thu, Jul 23 2020Genesis confirmed its alternative to the BMW 3 Series, the G70, will lose its manual transmission after the 2021 model year. It explained demand was far too low to justify offering the three-pedal setup for much longer. "Technically, the manual G70 still exists for the 2021 model year, at least any that may already be in the pipeline (which could be zero)," a company spokesperson told Autoblog. "So, the likelihood of being able to find a 2021 with a manual transmission will be very slim. Then, it is officially discontinued for the 2022 model year," A quick search of dealer inventory nationwide turned up around 30 manual G70s left, possibly more. Many automakers keep the stick around in order to advertise a lower entry-level price, but Genesis marketed the six-speed G70 as the dyed-in-the-wool enthusiast's choice. It came at the right time, too — at least on paper. The latest 3 Series is no longer offered with a stick on U.S. shores, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class hasn't been available with one for years. Now Genesis has concluded that even driving fans no longer want to row their own gears. Few will be flabbergasted to hear the news — and most buyers won't even notice. CarBuzz learned Genesis sold fewer than 100 stick-shifted G70s during the 2020 model year. The transmission was exclusively paired with rear-wheel drive and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, an engine turbocharged to 255 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Motorists who wanted the twin-turbocharged, 3.3-liter V6 were stuck with the automatic, though making a six with a stick available likely wouldn't have vastly increased its take rate in a market shifting away from manuals. The G70 was the first, last, and only stick-shifted Genesis. Parent company Hyundai still makes a manual transmission available in a handful of its models, including the Veloster N. Although the new Ford Bronco will be offered with a seven-speed manual, the list of cars available new with a stick in the United States is shrinking at an alarming rate. Genesis announced the automatic-only G70 a few short days after the Jeep Compass and the Honda Accord lost their third pedal, too. In America, stick-shifted new cars represented 1.1% of the market in 2019, a figure that puts them behind EVs (1.6%) for the first time. Related Video:  Â
2021 Genesis G70 pulls some camo back, reveals G80 and G90 design cues
Wed, Jun 24 2020The Genesis G70 may still feel like a new car, but a big refresh is going to drop anytime now. One of our spy photographers just gave us an up-close and fairly detailed look at what this update will consist of visually. Those new lights are lifted straight from the new G90 and G80. It’s a twin-headlight design, consisting of two light fixtures stacked on top of each other with a small gap in the middle. The look is luxurious and classy, but itÂ’s also giving Genesis a uniform face across all of its models. These latest shots also allow us our best look yet at the redesigned front grille. ItÂ’s shaped like the G80 and G90, but the maw doesnÂ’t appear to stretch as wide and tall as those massive front pieces do. Instead of extending downward into the lower part of the front end, this one ends in a V shape in what looks to be another lower front air inlet. Just like the current G70, this one is sporting some sculpting on the sides of the bumper where the fog lights are placed. The model spied here appears to be on the sportier side of the spectrum. ItÂ’s rocking the big, red Brembo brakes and what appear to be Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. Those 19-inch wheels look like a sport design, and the dual exhaust also suggests this is the twin-turbo V6, not the turbo four-cylinder. Genesis is rumored to be upgrading the G70Â’s V6 engine to a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 from the 3.3-liter displacement it has now. The four-cylinder is also said to be getting a big boost, taking from the extra power the Sonata N-LineÂ’s four-cylinder will produce. In addition to those big, oval tailpipes in back, we can also clearly see the twin-taillight design poking through the camouflage. Thin LED strips are visible — we imagine itÂ’ll mimic what we see on the front of the car to create a sense of uniformity in design. Even with all the camo, this G70 is undeniably sporty and luxurious at the same time. WeÂ’re looking forward to seeing the rest of the coverings pulled off, which shouldnÂ’t be long if Genesis intends to make this a 2021 model year car. Hyundai Palisade and Genesis GV80 production idled
Sun, Jun 21 2020In February of this year, the coronavirus pandemic forced Hyundai Motor Company to idle production at most of its factories in South Korea. The Chinese suppliers that provided wiring harnesses for models like the Hyundai Palisade and Genesis GV80 hadn't recovered from their COVID-19 shutdowns, causing a shortage of components. Since then, Hyundai, along with automakers around the globe, has faced repeated hurdles to restoring desired production numbers. Just-Auto reports another hiccup, with Hyundai compelled to shut down lines that build the Palisade and GV80 at its Ulsan, South Korea complex again last week over a lack of parts. Just-Auto didn't specify the parts in question. On top of that, Hyundai had already idled three lines at two plants after an employee at a supplier died, the cause of death thought to be COVID-19. Kia needed to do the same for two entire facilities in South Korea after two plant workers were diagnosed with the illness. In the U.S., Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama was idled from March 18 to May 4, resuming production at lower output on May 4 to manage inventory after the coronavirus and lockdown measures gutted new car sales.  Hyundai, like giant Ford and tiny McLaren, will be ruing the lost momentum of its recovery. The group turned in its best quarterly profit since 2017 at the end of last year, thanks to the larger margins that crossovers and SUVs deliver. Hyundai brand U.S. sales last year of 688,771 units was tantalizing close to an annual sum the brand hasn't hit since 2012. In January, the automaker predicted it would improve on last year's 3.5% group operating profit margin by hitting 5% this year. The nearly 10,000 reservations taken for the GV80 fueled the optimism, when Genesis sold just over 21,000 vehicles in total last year in the U.S. However, through the first quarter, group sales were down 11% globally and in the U.S. Worse, Just-Auto says the group's global sales have nosedived 26% through the first five months. The production halts on the models that deliver the best return will prolong the pain and make it sharper. Related Video:
