Fri, Jul 29 2022

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor, Green, John Beltz Snyder. They kick things off by talking about the latest vehicle reveals, specifically the Cadillac Celestiq show car and the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. They discuss Chevy's move to offer incentives to help prevent customers from flipping the new Corvette Z06. Greg has spent time behind the wheel of the 2022 Range Rover First Edition, while John has been driving the 2023 Genesis GV60 Performance. From the mailbag, a listener is looking to replace a 2003 Subaru Forester with something that can hold three dog crates and gets decent fuel economy. 2023 Genesis GV60 Road Test Review: Plush electric crossover to Motown

Thu, Jul 28 2022

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Genesis GV60 rounds out a trio of new, state-of-the-art electric cars from the Hyundai family. It follows the excellent Hyundai Ioniq 5 and also-excellent Kia EV6, and is built on the same electric platform (called E-GMP) with the same 800-volt battery architecture. The GV60, the first of two new electric vehicles from the Genesis luxury brand (the Electrified G80 being the other), aims to set itself apart from its cousins in design, performance and level of luxury. It certainly looks different than the others, though its lines are closer to the sleek but still sharp EV6 than the creased, futuristic aesthetic of the Ioniq 5. Like the EV6, it boasts athletic proportions, with the wheels pushed far out to the corners. With a wheelbase of 114.2 inches, the GV60 is identical in footprint to the Kia EV6 and smaller between the axles than the Ioniq 5. At 177.8 inches in overall length, however, the Genesis is shorter than both. The GV60 stands at 62.4 inches in height, which is in between its siblings, and like the taller Ioniq 5, seems even loftier until you're standing right next to it. Inside, the GV60 is a place of tasteful luxury, putting design and tech at the forefront. The first thing youÂ’ll probably notice after climbing inside is the glass orb on the center console. When you start the car, this sphere flips upside-down to reveal a rotary gear selector. ItÂ’s a feature made for Instagram and TikTok. The interior materials appear to be of a higher quality than the Hyundai and Kia, and the overall ambience feels more like traditional luxury than the Ioniq 5Â’s minimalist modern atmosphere or the EV6Â’s sporty cabin. In other words, itÂ’s a proper Genesis. The compromise here is that the Genesis GV60Â’s rear legroom is outdone by both the Hyundai and Kia. Cargo volume, at 24 cubic feet behind the second row, is almost identical to that of the Kia EV6, but less than the Ioniq 5Â’s 27.7 cubic feet (though as weÂ’ve seen in the Ioniq and EV6 luggage tests, the specs may not equate to real world usefulness). Like its cousins, the GV60 uses a pair of digital screens for the infotainment system and instrument panel. These are easy to use and quick to respond, but the GV60 puts an emphasis on its hard-button controls, which means less digging through menus to fiddle with settings.

2023 Genesis G90 reservations open through Priority One

Tue, Jul 26 2022

Genesis created its Priority One program for the G60 battery-electric crossover. In addition to personalizing the buying experience for luxury EV buyers, Priority One ensured customers were paired with retailers that could provide the best EV buying experience in terms of knowledge, service and charging infrastructure, and we can expect to it be extended to the 2023 Electrified G80 sedan when that becomes available to order. In the meantime, the 2023 G90 sedan breaks the Priority One seal for ICE models, Genesis having opened the pre-order queue for U.S. shoppers. Getting on the list means visiting the Genesis site, filling in some info, and putting down a $1,000 refundable deposit. We've acclimatized to automakers asking for deposits for brand new vehicles, especially EVs; placing a deposit for a new generation of a current vehicle strikes us as a novel approach — one we'll now be on the lookout for. What's even more unusual is that we're still missing some pertinent information about the 2023 G90, starting with the price. The brand hasn't leveled with us about engine specs, either. Information gleaned about the new twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 in the engine bay has come from checking the engine's Korean specs and comparing those to the G80 and to documents filed with the U.S. EPA. We're told we'll get more details "later this summer." The brand announced the 2023 G90 with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, an upgrade from the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 in the current sedan. The 3.5 makes 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque in the G80 sedan, numbers providing an improvement of at least 10 ponies and 15 pound-feet over the 3.3-liter. In its home market, Genesis sells a long-wheelbase G90 carrying an added 7.5 inches of length, available with a version of the 3.5-liter that's also supercharged and fitted with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Car and Driver reports this engine is on its way here, too. According to the Genesis South Korea site, that engine produces 409 hp and 405 pound-feet of torque in that market. However, documents Genesis filed with the U.S. EPA show horsepower listed at 420 hp for a trim that's called the G90 MHEV. The horsepower number is probably no accident, since it matches the output of the 5.0-liter V8 optionally available in the 2022 G90.

Buick takes top spot in 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

Tue, Jun 28 2022

People, economies, and supply chains weren't the only things continuing to get sick over the past year. The 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) is out, showing the average rate of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership increased overall. The average figure for the 32 ranked manufacturers in 2020 was about 166 problems per 100 vehicles. In the 2021 IQS, that dropped to an average of 162. This year, the average jumps to 180 problems. J.D. Power says that figure is a record high over the 36-year history of the study. Buick leapt to the top of the rankings this year with the fewest issues, at 139 problems per 100 vehicles in the first 100 days of ownership. After Dodge became the first American automaker to lead the IQS in 2020, followed by Ram in 2021, this year marks a three-peat for U.S. carmakers. Dodge took second this year at 143 PP100, Chevrolet third with 147 PP100, Genesis the first luxury maker on the chart in fourth with 156 PP100. Between February and May, this year's study gathered responses to 223 questions from more than 84,000 new 2022-model-year car owners and lessees. The questions are designed to zero in on real-world problems new owners encounter with nine categories of vehicle features: Infotainment; features, controls and displays; exterior; driving assistance; interior; powertrain; seats; driving experience; and climate. As has been the case in the past few year, infotainment has proved to be the most problematic bugbear making scores worse. Considering features individually, six of 10 of the worst problem areas dealt with infotainment, causing infotainment's score of 45 PP100 to be 19.5 PP100 worse than the second-placed feature. Consumers ranked getting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to connect reliably as the most troublesome.  GM didn't just score with Buick, which was one of only nine of the 33 ranked brands to show improvement this year. The conglomerate earned first place with the fewest PP100 among all the automaker groups, and scored the most model-level awards with nine, ahead of BMW with eight and Hyundai Group with three.  This year's study again showed a gap between luxury and mass-market makers, thought to be down to the amount of tech in luxury vehicles that consumers aren't properly informed about or that doesn't act as expected — that latter issue exacerbated by the chip shortage.

Genesis reportedly planning One of One division for one-off cars

Tue, Jun 7 2022

Commissioning a one-off car may soon become a lot more affordable. Hyundai-owned Genesis is reportedly preparing to launch a new division called One of One that will be tasked with making one- and few-off models like Rolls-Royce and other firms are already doing. Anonymous sources told South Korean newspaper The Korean Economic Daily that Genesis will announce its One of One division this month. The company won't simply send out a press release; it will reportedly unveil the first cars designed and built by One of One, though there's no word yet on what they'll be. However, the sources said that the range of customization options are wide. Buyers will ultimately be able to modify anything from "the powertrain and transmission to seating arrangements, interior and exterior colors, and other options." The company will start small: One of One will initially give buyers the option of customizing the interior in some Genesis models. More options will be added gradually, and the goal is to make the One of One treatment available across the full lineup. On paper, this sounds a lot like the personalization program that several high-end carmakers have operated for years, but it stops short of coachbuilding; in other words, you'll be (in theory) able to order a GV80 with wall-to-wall leather upholstery that matches your favorite wallet, but you won't be able to request a production version of the X Speedium concept (pictured) powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine and painted in the Gulf colors. If the rumor is accurate, One of One will put customization within the reach of more buyers, but the long-term aim isn't to democratize this process. It's to move Genesis further upmarket. "Hyundai is strengthening its bespoke program with an aim to take the Genesis brand to the same or similar level as Bentley or Rolls-Royce," one source told The Korean Economic Daily. That's a big bet for a relatively young and small company, but Genesis has grown at a surprising pace and established itself as a credible player in the luxury-car segment. 2023 Genesis GV60 priced just under $60,000

Tue, May 17 2022

Hot on the heels of the Cadillac Lyriq's pricing, Genesis has announced the cost for its own luxury electric crossover. The 2023 Genesis GV60 will be extremely competitive, with a lower base price, if not lower across the board. The base model is the Advanced AWD, and it starts at $59,980, about $3,000 less than the Cadillac. At 314 horsepower, it's barely less power than the Caddy, plus it has all-wheel drive rather than rear-wheel drive. If the power sounds familiar, that's because it's basically the same motor setup as the all-wheel-drive Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 (not including the upcoming EV6 GT). Range comes in at 248 miles, which is less than either the Hyundai or Kia with the same powertrain. It's also less than the base Cadillac's 312-mile range. The GV60 Advanced AWD comes quite well-equipped. Inside it has leather heated and ventilated front seats, Bang & Olufsen audio, dual 12.3-inch infotainment and instrument screens, head-up display and a heat pump. It's packed with technology, too, such as the vehicle-to-load charging that makes it a mobile power source. Facial recognition and fingerprint authentication allow access and car starting without a key, and activate personal settings. It also has automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-centering, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, parking sensors, navigation and remote fore and aft driving for pulling out of parking spots. GV60s will also come with three years of free 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America stations. Sitting above the GV60 Advanced is the GV60 Performance AWD. It starts at $68,980 and brings power up to 429 horses, or 483 when in "Boost Mode." Range drops to 235 miles with this trim. It's also about $4,000 more expensive than the all-wheel-drive Cadillac Lyriq, which will also deliver on 500 horsepower. The GV60 Performance AWD does include a number of other niceties besides extra power. The 20-inch wheels are upgraded to 21-inch units, and adaptive suspension and an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential were fitted. Inside, the front seats get additional adjustments, heated rear seats and a faux suede headliner. Digital Key 2, which allows drivers to use their phone as a key while also making it possible to share the key to others digitally, is also included. Genesis G90 gets supercharged, hybrid, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6

Tue, Apr 26 2022

There's more good news for the 2023 Genesis G90 — at least, for those who believe more power is always more better. The South Korean brand is sending our market the standard-wheelbase flagship sedan, which was announced with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, an upgrade from the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 in the current sedan. The 3.5 makes 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque in the G80 sedan, numbers providing an improvement of at least 10 ponies and 15 pound-feet. In its home market, Genesis sells a long-wheelbase G90 bearing an added 7.5 inches of length, and available with a version of the 3.5-liter that's also supercharged and fitted with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. The horse number is probably no accident, since it matches the output of the 5.0-liter V8 optionally available in the 2022 G90. Torque from the supercharged 3.5-liter twin-turbo outshines the 5.0-liter by about 20 pound-feet.   Despite the power disparities between the 2022 G90's 3.3-liter and 5.0-liter and the 2023 G90's two 3.5-liter variants, there isn't much in it for fuel economy differences when comparing AWD trims, since that's the only drivetrain the G90 MHEV will offer. The EPA lists the 3.3-liter as getting 17 miles per gallon in the city, 24 on the highway, and 20 combined. The 5.0-liter is rated at 16 city, 23 highway, 18 combined. The mild hybrid 3.5-liter is more frugal with its gas than the 5.0-liter, being rated at 17 city, 24 highway, and 20 combined. To close the circle, the 2023 G90 with the non-hybrid 3.5-liter V6 puts in a slightly better showing than the supercharged mild-hybrid with 18 city, 26 highway, 21 combined. The sedan is scheduled to reach dealers later this year and there's still quite a bit to find out. Those details, including pricing, should trickle out over the next few months. 2022 New York Auto Show Roundup | All the reveals, reviews, pictures

Fri, Apr 15 2022

NEW YORK — In case you missed it, the New York Auto Show took place this year after being canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. A lot of manufacturers showed up in force, but not everybody did. No matter, we were there, and we brought you news, photos and scoops from the floor throughout the show. All of our New York-related stories can be found at our central hub here, but if youÂ’d rather just get a small taste of everything in a quick and digestible format, keep scrolling. 2023 Kia Telluride and its new X-Pro trim Kia revealed the TellurideÂ’s first major refresh at New York, and it makes the three-row crossover a little bit more desirable without screwing up what we liked about it before. ThereÂ’s a new X-Line and X-Pro trim for someone who might want a little more off-road capability, and a number of tech improvements. Most notably, a newly-designed dash features new and bigger screens. 2023 Hyundai Palisade The TellurideÂ’s sister car from Hyundai was treated to a similar refresh. Like the Telluride, Hyundai gave the Palisade a slightly revised look, a new off-road trim (called XRT in the PalisadeÂ’s case), more tech inside and a new dash design with full-width air vents. If we had to choose, weÂ’re a little more impressed with the TellurideÂ’s refresh, as a number of us on staff actually prefer the pre-refresh Palisade styling over the new one. 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L This one was inevitable. Jeep revealed the longer, roomier versions of its Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in New York, and theyÂ’re designated with an “L” at the end of their names. Total length grows by a foot, and the wheelbase goes up by 7 inches versus the standard Wagoneer models. Jeep has essentially allocated all this extra room to the cargo area, as it now offers a staggering 44.2 cubic-feet of space behind the third row. Besides the L, Jeep announced that its new Hurricane inline-six engine would find its first home in the Wagoneer. Efficiency gets a small boost, and power is more than sufficient at either 420 horsepower (standard output) or 510 horsepower (high-output version) from the twin-turbo I-6. Chrysler Airflow Graphite Concept The Stellantis party continues with Chrysler and its slightly revised Airflow. Re-styled for the New York market after initially debuting at CES in Las Vegas, the Airflow Concept gets new paint, changed accent colors, a slightly changed interior design and a new interpretation of the Chrysler logo.

Genesis X Speedium Coupe is an electric shooting brake

Thu, Apr 14 2022

NEW YORK — Last year, Genesis wowed us and the rest of the car world with the drop-dead gorgeous X concept. It was a long, wide and seriously slinky coupe that had us begging for a production model. Genesis hasn't given us one yet, but it's clearly still toying with this big coupe idea, as evidenced by the Genesis X Speedium Coupe concept. The name comes from a racetrack near Inje, South Korea, and the color is named Inje Green after the tree-covered mountain landscape around the course. And it's clearly related to the old X with its long, low hood, wide fenders and graceful roofline. But it has many changes. Starting from the front, the X Speedium no longer has a grille. Instead, the signature headlights span the full fascia, and split in the middle to suggest the shape of the corporate grille design. It's a clear nod to the car being electric. Moving rearward, we can see the roofline has been extended much farther back. It dips down and ends close to the tail, creating something between a fastback and shooting brake. The cheeky spoiler at the back also has a slick integrated brake light. It's certainly an attractive car, and we'd be happy to see this version make it to production, too. That being said, we're not sure it's quite as successful as its predecessor. The EV fascia makes sense, but the lengthened roof makes the back look a little bubbly and heavy. It just doesn't look quite as balanced or as lean as the original X. But this version is likely far more practical. Really, Genesis should just make both. The world needs more beautiful two-door cars anyway, so why limit the selection to one? Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
