2022 Genesis G70 Luggage Test | Pack lightly
Fri, Aug 13 2021In terms of size and driving demeanor, the 2022 Genesis G70 and Cadillac CT4 are closely aligned. They're rear-wheel-drive, which makes them inherently different from the Mercedes A-Classes of the world that are more akin to them in price. They're also smaller than the BMW 3 Series and others, which has its benefits in terms of agility. It's also a detriment in terms of interior and cargo space. The G70 trunk measures only 10.5 cubic feet, while the CT4 trunk slightly outdoes it at 10.9. However, please don't automatically read that as a con. These cars are ultimately better for their size, much as the BMW 3 Series has not coincidentally lost a few steps since its started packing on pounds and inches. You just have to accept the tradeoff. Not everyone needs to fit four NBA point guards in their car at the same time. Not everyone needs to carry six suitcases at once. Personally, I'd be just peachy with either of these. That said, how many of those six suitcases are we talking about here? And how does it compare with the G70? Let's find out. Here is the trunk. Immediately, it's apparent that this space does not have a lot of height.  Confirmed, there is not much height at all, even compared to the CT4. Above left is a bag that's 16 inches tall, and it won't fit that way in the G70. Pictured above right is the CT4 trunk with the same bag (left side of the trunk) that has no problem fitting that way. There are other inherent issues. There is a large structural crossmember behind the back seat. This reduces height even more. Only one of my roller bags could fit under it -- the two shown above are virtually the same dimensions (24L x 15W x 10D), but their different wheel placements are enough to make a difference in this rare case. If the bag can't clear this crossmember, there's a big useless gap between bags and bulkheads. Let's see how much fits in total. As in every luggage test I do, I use two midsize roller suitcases that would need to be checked in at the airport (26 inches long, 16 wide, 11 deep), two roll-aboard suitcases that just barely fit in the overhead (24L x 15W x 10D), and one smaller roll-aboard that fits easily (23L x 15W x 10D). I also include my wife's fancy overnight bag just to spruce things up a bit (21L x 12W x 12D). Because of the height limitation and cross member, loading is significantly compromised and I was left with a lot of leftover space that's too small to hold any of my bags (pictured below).
2022 Genesis G70 3.3T First Drive | If it's not broken, just restyle it
Fri, Jul 23 2021The 2022 Genesis G70 may look quite a bit different on the outside, but don’t let that fool you. Underneath, very little has changed, and thatÂ’s just fine by us. Our week with the overhauled sport sedan reassured us that the G70 is still one of the most enjoyable small luxury cars in the segment, and it looks even better to boot. The G70 wasnÂ’t ugly to begin with, but the styling updates are nonetheless welcome. The redesign tweaks some of the G70Â’s more generic and low-rent elements and grafting on the split headlights, taillights and pentagonal grille of its siblings. The delicate mesh in the grille looks crisp and expensive. The side vents on the fenders are small and placed low, appearing more integrated with the fender, rather than tacked-on. All these upgrades make the car clearly a Genesis, not just some off-brand luxury car. It even looks lower and wider, which suits the sporting nature of the car. The cabin gets a smattering of updates too. All G70s now come standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. It's still centered where it was before, but it's a wider (and thus lower) screen. It also has much thinner bezels which makes it sit more naturally within the flow of the dash. Powering it is the latest infotainment operating system used almost universally by Hyundai and Kia, only reskinned with slightly different, Genesis-specific icons and fonts. Its humbler roots show through when using the radio, where the channel numbers are displayed on nixie tubes. DonÂ’t let the shared applications discourage you, though; this is a very good system that reacts quickly to inputs and has easy-to-read buttons and lettering. In fact, the placement of the screen means you can steady your hand on part of the dashboard. The dedicated shortcut buttons lower on the center stack are welcome, too. The one other interior update is the addition of a screen for half of the instrument panel. It shows a virtual tachometer dial, as well as other bits of information. It doesn't add much to the driving experience, except to maybe make it seem more high-tech than it is. It's neither good nor bad, and we'll leave it at that. The rest of the interior is pretty much untouched, and that's not a bad thing, though some of the more thoroughly and beautifully redesigned Genesis models have us wishing the company went a little further with the G70.
Porsche 911 Turbos, and the new Lotus Emira | Autoblog Podcast #686
Fri, Jul 9 2021In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Road Test Editor Zac Palmer. The two talk about their experiences in the 911 Turbo and Turbo S Cabriolet, then pivot to talking about the BMW M3 Competition on the Indiana Nurburgring. They follow that up by discussing driver assistance systems, given recent experience in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade with Super Cruise and Hyundai's Highway Drive Assist. After that, they get into some news, talking about the new Lotus Emira and Genesis G80 Sport. Finally, they wrap up with a rather interesting two-for-one "Spend my Money" edition where they help two listeners with different car buying conundrums. 2022 Genesis G80 Sport model shown for the first time
Tue, Jul 6 2021Here’s your first look at the 2022 Genesis G80 Sport. Just as it did before, the Sport model is going to offer a slight increase in driving performance over the standard model. Genesis is making it look the part, too. Design is the main point for today, as very few details about the carÂ’s performance are available outside of the new photos. That said, Genesis did reveal that itÂ’s adding rear-wheel steering to the Sport. Genesis doesnÂ’t go into detail about its rear-wheel steering system, but does say that itÂ’s designed for “maximizing driving stability.” About the appearance, though. The main differentiators are in the details. Its grille is darkened with dark glossy chrome to make it look a bit more sinister. The front bumper gets what Genesis is calling a “three-dimensional wing shape” that features a design different from the standard G80 — thereÂ’s more grille mesh in the lower bumper. More darkened trim is applied to the headlight bezels and side moldings. Sport-exclusive 20-inch wheels with a “G-Matrix” pattern cover newly black- or red-painted calipers. The rear adopts a new bumper design that integrates a mesh look at the bottom for extra sportiness. YouÂ’re looking at a new, exclusive color for the Sport here, too. ItÂ’s called Cavendish Red, and is inspired by the red cliffs of CanadaÂ’s Prince Edward Island. Interior color options include Sevilla Red and Black with either gray or red stitching. Other interior changes for the Sport model include a new three-spoke steering wheel design and new trim choices: aluminum, carbon fiber and a diamond-patterned hybrid weaving pattern. Lastly, youÂ’ll have two seat options, one with diamond quilting and one with quilting in a V pattern. Powertrain and other performance enhancements are staying under wraps for now. Genesis promises more details in the third quarter when it officially launches the G80 Sport. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. The last Hyundai V8 car is already here
Fri, Jun 11 2021Hyundai will end production of V8-powered cars this year, if a new report out of South Korea proves true. It would make the 5.0-liter unit found in the current Genesis G90 sedan the final Hyundai Tau V8. According to South Korean website Daum, the updated Genesis G90, expected later this year, will no longer have the 420-horse, 383 lb-ft V8 available as an option. The top-grade engine will, moving forward, be the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, good for 380 horsepower and edging out the V8 with 391 pound-feet of torque. In addition, the V8 was discontinued for the updated Kia K9 recently. We knew that model as the Kia K900 in the U.S., and dropping the V8 was a moot point for us because the entire model was eliminated for 2021. We thought that the V8 might be on its way out when we saw the 2022 Genesis G90 testing under heavy camouflage. It's not surprising, considering the entire industry is moving toward smaller, forced-induction engines. According to Daum, the G90 will be redesigned with an eye toward weight reduction, chassis rigidity, and a lower center of gravity. An electric version, likely called the eG90, is expected as well. It'll almost certainly receive the quad headlight signature of two thin lines on either side of a large crest grille as well. Going even further, the site claims that the G90 will feature a rear-wheel steering system to improve cornering and high-speed stability. The V6-powered 2022 Genesis G90 is expected to debut later this year, and the electric version will follow at a later date. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party. 2022 Genesis G90 captured in spy photos
Wed, May 26 2021The Genesis G90 sedan was just extensively restyled for 2020, but the range-topping luxury sedan is getting another redesign, and these spy pictures give us a first glimpse as to what we can expect. The biggest changes appear to be concentrated in the greenhouse. Whereas the side-window profile of the current car is largely squared-off, the new car moves to a more curved upper edge and a beltline that's turned up at the rear. Additionally, the new G90 shows a sliver of a window added to the C-pillar where today's G90 has a solid C-pillar. Up front, we see the G90 retaining the Genesis signature oversized shield-shaped grille with cross-hatch mesh. The headlights, though, adopt the brand's latest two-band design, which is likely repeated on the front fenders under the little extra flap of camo. The prototype G90 also wears a dramatic new wheel design. The new 2022 G90 is expected to launch later this year. The model is sure to share its platform with the new G80 sedan. Under the hood, we'd anticipate a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, as found in the G80. The current car also offers a V8 engine, but that might not carry over to the new model. There's also the possibility of an EV version, although that likely would come later. We're sure to learn more about the new G90 as its reveal date nears. Add IIHS Top Safety Pick+ to the 2021 Genesis G80's list of accolades
Tue, May 25 2021Genesis, the Hyundai Group's upscale division, is on a roll lately. The GV80 SUV, the second-generation G70 sports sedan, and the dramatically redesigned 2021 Genesis G80 luxury sedan have delivered an impressive 1-2-3 punch. We've called the new G80 "a sleek, elegant and serious luxury car," and now it earns another accolade, nabbing a best-possible score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Top Safety Pick+. 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T AWD View 33 Photos The new G80 aced its crash tests, with Good ratings in the agency's six evaluations: small-overlap front crash tests for the driver-side and passenger-side, moderate-overlap front crash test, side-impact crash test, roof-strength test, and head restraint tests. The G80's collision-avoidance systems earned Superior ratings in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian simulations. The standard headlights in all G80 models were deemed Acceptable (although some early-production G80s require the headlights to be adjusted in order to meet that standard — Hyundai is notifying owners of those cars that they can come into the dealership to have that done for free). The 2021 G80 follows in the tire tracks of the GV80 SUV, the 2021 G90 full-size luxury sedan and the 2021 G70 sports sedan, all of which also earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. Like we said, Genesis is on a roll. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. Genesis Infotainment System Review
