Saab built only 7,000 high performance SPG (Special Performance Group) editions from 1985-1991. Most were black but they were also occasionally offered in red and gray. All were 2-door hatchbacks, 5-speeds with higher performance turbo chargers, SPG side skirts, upgraded suspension etc. 1990 is the preferred year as this is the only year that Saab used a better performing/more reliable Mitsubishi sourced turbo.

I am a Saab collector and recently added two older Saab classics to my collection. You can only drive so many cars and I find I enjoy the older classics- Those of you who have specifically looked for a SPG will appreciate the superior condition of this particular car. From what I can tell, it still wears the original black paint which has a beautiful shine, reflecting the fact that it has always been garaged. I've had the car on the lift with my Saab mechanic recently and there are zero rust issues anywhere. This car has spent its entire life in the south (Tennessee and Virginia). The gentlemen I bought the car from was also a Saab enthusiast and did most of the maintenance himself. Here is a list of work that he did during the last 10,000 miles:

- all new motor mounts
- replaced all belts
- new alternator
- new starter
- converted a/c to 134
- new battery (6/2013)
- new brake reservoir
- new heater control valve
- new turbo oil supply line
- new fuel sending unit
- new muffler with lifetime warranty
- new aftermarket cd stereo with new rear speakers

I do not do my own maintenance ...all the following work was all done in November 2013 by a Saab Specialist shop:

- complete tune up and oil/filter change
- replaced power steering pump
- replaced rear brake pads and rotors
- replaced valve cover gasket
- replaced both inner cv joints
- replaced both outer cv boots
- replaced all front ball joints
- replaced both outer tie-rod ends
- installed 4 new KYB shocks

The interior is in excellent condition... a couple of minor dash cracks in the usual places. All leather is very good...there is one small (1 inch) seam split in the drivers seat bottom. The carpet is good- no major wear or tears...newer gray rubber floor mats. The headliner is excellent and tight. The rear gray deck lid (covers trunk area) has minor fading. The original donut spare appears unused. Original Saab toolbox under trunk floor is complete including all tools. All glass is excellent with one minor nick on front window. I believe the front window was replaced at some point in time because it has none of the usual nicks and wear you'd expect of a car with this mileage. Drivers side window needs a new rubber scraper as the one there now is brittle. The sunroof opens and seals as it should- no leaks.

The photos tell the story with the exterior... a few of the usual stone chips on the lip of the hood which have been touched up. Saab makes a fitted black tape you can put on this lip for future protection. There is a small less than an inch long "dimple" on the roof that would not photograph. All four Saab turbo wheels are in excellent condition. Tires have approximately 80% tread life. The car was inspected in October and has a Virginia 10/2014 sticker. One of the front headlights appears very slightly loose but may only be missing a screw. The under bumper fog lights were removed by a previous owner.

I have the original owners manual binder and all books. I have two keys...but I do not have the alarm key fobs.

This SPG starts right up and idles perfectly. The turbo spools up as it should and the car accelerates, as you would expect, with enhanced power better than the standard Saab turbo. I have no oil leaks, no fluid leaks. I have never tried the cruise control so I can't say if it is operable or not. All dash gauges are operable and accurate. The clutch engages where it should and the shifter engages effortlessly.

If you have been looking for a SPG that is not a project- not perfect but in excellent condition... one that you can get in and drive and not have to worry about any impending maintenance issues- this is the one. I am happy to show the car in-person and you are welcome to speak to my Saab mechanic about the recent work (receipts provided).

Email me with any questions or to make an appointment to see and drive the car. Garaged in Charlottesville, Va (22901). The car is also for sale locally and the auction may be ended early if an acceptable offer is received.

Spyker to appeal dismissal of Saab lawsuit against GM

Fri, 21 Jun 2013

It seems as if Spyker CEO Victor Muller has made a decision on whether or not to pursue a legal battle between his company and General Motors. Spyker has announced it will appeal a US District Court decision to throw out the company's lawsuit against GM. As you may recall, on June 10 Judge Gershwin Drain ruled tht GM had a right to approve or disapprove Spyker's sale of Saab to Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile. Spyker sued GM for some $3 billion, claiming that the American automaker had forced Saab into bankruptcy by stopping Spyker from transferring intellectual property to its Chinese partner.
Spyker has said only that it plans to appeal the decision. Until now, the company has been silent about the ruling. GM, meanwhile, has said it is pleased with the original outcome. You can read the quick Spyker press release below for more information.

Subaru recalls 81,000 Impreza models for airbag replacement

Sun, May 31 2015

Subaru has submitted paperwork to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding an Impreza recall to replace faulty Takata airbag inflators, and the final tally is 81,100 units built between January 28, 2003 and May 31, 2005. Earlier this month Subaru had projected 78,000 Imprezas would be recalled from the 2004 and 2005 model years, but that final number also includes the Saab 9-2x; that Saab model, nicknamed the "Saabaru," was a badge-engineered Impreza Wagon that General Motors began selling in 2004. Affected Saab models were built from February 11, 2004 to March 17, 2005. This recall specifically affects passenger-side inflators, and Subaru and GM will notify owners that they can take their cars to the dealer for a free repair. The recall doesn't officially begin, however, until July 17, 2015. The notice from the NHTSA below has more information. Related Video: Report Receipt Date: MAY 28, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V323000 Component(s): AIR BAGS Potential Number of Units Affected: 81,100 Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.SUMMARY: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.CONSEQUENCE: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.REMEDY: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin July 27, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 14V-763 in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign.NOTES: Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

NEVS Saab EV prototype on display, with top speed of just 75 mph

Sat, Aug 23 2014

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the Saab-owning Swedish holding company that is in turn owned by Chinese investors, has some problems (i.e., no cash). But that isn't stopping NEVS from showing off a prototype Saab 9-3 Electric Vehicle this week. But wait, you might be saying, didn't NEVS already start production of a 9-3 EV? Yes, indeed, and the vehicle displayed this week was indeed built at the Saab plant in Trollhattan in May as one of those early pilot builds. A modified Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan, the EV has had the lithium-ion battery pack jammed under the floor, so all of the cargo and passenger space of the gas-powered 9-3 remains available. "The starting point for our development of the Electric Vehicle project was to maintain all the good attributes and characteristics," said NEVS' vice president of engineering and product development, Stig Nodin in a statement. You can find the press release below. The li-ion pack comes from Beijing National Battery Technology (which is owned by the same company that owns NEVS) and can offer a range of about 120 miles, NEVS says. The prototype also has a 100-kW electric motor that offers 140 horsepower that provides a 0-60 miles per hour time of 10 seconds and a top speed of just 75 miles per hour. That's unlikely to be fast enough to outrun Saab's creditors, but NEVS says that the prototype is here "to serve as a reference for specification of coming production model(s)," so let's hope the speed number can be increased while the range at least stays the same. Today Nevs presented the Saab 9-3 Electric Vehicle as designed and produced as part of a prototype series in Trollhattan. The car is a modified Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan where the batteries are placed under the floor, keeping the full interior space as well as the luggage compartment intact. With that, the Saab 9-3 EV is just as practical as the Saab 9-3 Aero with gasoline engine. The Saab 9-3's famous driving-experience is of course preserved in the EV, helped by its low center of gravity and a 50/50 weight distribution. "We are happy to present the result of Nevs engineering into a real Saab EV product. The Saab cars' well-known performance and safety is maintained and we foresee a very good product for the market. When we developed the Saab 9-3 Aero Sedan Model Year 14, we focused on enhancing the driving experience, safety and quality.
