Rare European Import

VIN: WDB10704612002759

Note: The VIN# listed in the eBay Vehicle Description section is not accurate. The true VIN# is WDB10704612002759, but as it's a European VIN# eBay wouldn't accept it.

Up for auction is my 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SL.  The car has 135,589 miles on the odometer, and wears Navy Blue paint over a Gray interior. It’s equipped with AMG Exhaust and color-matched AMG Penta wheels. The motor snaps to life and pulls strong despite its age. This would be an excellent candidate for a restoration or a simply fantastic weekend cruiser. This car has a clear Virginia title and is currently insured; the VIN# poses no issues there.  Here is a video of the motor running embedded below, or please search for video ID "nim9-Jf93Fk" on YouTube.

I recently (Feb. 2014) had work done to the vehicle to get it back on the road and improve the aesthetics, to include:

  • Full Tune up (oil and filter, air filter)
  • Fuel injection service
  • New battery
  • Coolant flush
  • Transmission flush
  • Power steering fluid flush
  • New Sumitomo HTR A/S P01 tires
  • Alignment
  • Full interior and exterior detailing
  • New power window switches (1 spare included)
  • Restored the center console woodwork (sanded, stained, polyurethane application, and waxed)
  • Replaced the underhood insulation
  • Adjusted the parking brake
  • New AMG center caps (not shown) are included with the sale

The power brakes all work, with plenty of pad life left.  The rotors aren’t warped, and there’s no vibration in the pedal.  The rotors are a unique helical pattern. The wheels have a few nicks in the paint.

The engine has great oil pressure, warms up quick and maintains temperature without overheating. The transmission shifts smooth, but really shifts best once it’s had time to warm up. There is a little play in the steering wheel but I believe it can be adjusted out.

None of the warning lights on the dash are on. The car still has the Bosch headlights and fog lights. The taillights each have small cracks in the corner orange, but are not shattered. The radio and speakers work, the tape deck does not.

The hard top in is in great condition.  The soft top mechanicals are in great shape and all the pivot points just received lubrication. The soft top needs replacing. The paint is largely in great shape, but has a blemish in the clear coat on the driver’s side left fender (near the headlight) and another on the hood by the passenger’s side mirror.

Some borrowed text regarding the 500SL:

The R107 bodied SL was one of Mercedes-Benz' most successful models in terms of production. But while a considerable number of these roadsters were built, with a variety of I6 and V8 engines, the 500SL is a rare and desirable beast. Total R107 production from 1972-1989 is cited by various sources to be 237,287 cars, with an additional 62,888 SLC fixed roof variants. The 5.0 liter Euro-spec engine, with higher compression and freer breathing, was the pinnacle of this design, producing 240hp and 296lb-ft of torque. Only 11,822 500SLs were produced from 1981-1989. This engine was never intended or certified by Mercedes-Benz for US distribution. During the same time the 500SL was produced for the rest of the world, here in the US we had to satisfy ourselves with the 380SL (1981-1985) and the 560SL (1985-1989). The closest US performer was the larger 5.6 liter 560SL from 1985-1989, producing 227hp and 287lb-ft of torque.

Other than the performance differences, there are a number of styling cues that make any European spec R107 generally more desirable than US spec models. Notably, the bumpers are smaller and more graceful than the bulky bumpers required on US models. The 500SL was also delivered from the manufacturer with sleek halogen projector single lens headlamps rather than the dual sealed beam units required on US models. There was also a tasteful rear deck spoiler on the 500SL that was absent from all US variants. During the early 80's when well-heeled American consumers were unable to get anything more than a 3.8 liter V8 through their local dealers, those in the know were legally able to import the 500SL through "gray market" channels. This involved an importer who would be required to federalize the cars to ensure they met US safety requirements. Depending on who managed this process for the buyer and what state they lived in, more or less was changed to satisfy federal and state regulators. In many cases, some or all the desirable cues listed above were removed, and US-spec headlights and bumpers installed. Today, a fan of this model looks for a car that preserves as much of its European character as possible. In addition to the relatively low-volume 500SL production, it's estimated that fewer than 1500 500SLs were ever imported into the US under these gray market rules during it's 9 year production run. Take into account the federalization process, attrition, age, re-export (very common these days) and you are left with very few good quality examples for US admirers to pursue.

I ran an AutoCheck on the VIN#, and the Vehicle’s history only goes back as far as 2001. I purchased the car earlier this year at an auction with the intent to restore it but the money for a full restoration isn’t in the cards right now.

Mercedes previews GLC ahead of June 17 reveal

    Mon, Jun 15 2015

Mercedes has confirmed that it will unveil its new GLC crossover on June 17, releasing this preview sketch and a few details to give us an idea of what to expect. Set to replace the outgoing GLK, the GLC will slot in between the GLA and GLE (nee M-Class) in the Silver Star automaker's growing sport-ute lineup. Its nameplate shifts to better align with the C-Class sedan and the SLC roadster that's set to replace the SLK. The crossover's design was previewed in slant-back form as the Concept GLC Coupe in Shanghai a couple of months ago, but as you can see from this sketch, it'll initially come with a more conventional roofline. In announcing the livestream of its reveal, Daimler revealed that the GLC will feature a multi-chamber air suspension, Dynamic Select transmission control, and 4Matic all-wheel drive. It also promises to consume 19 percent less fuel than the GLK it replaces. World Premiere Mercedes-Benz GLC With the introduction of the new GLC on June 17th, Mercedes-Benz presents the second generation of its mid-range SUV. The GLC retains its predecessor's outstanding off-road characteristics and combines them with an all-new design. What is more, the GLC takes comfort and agility to a whole new level: With the innovative multi-chamber air suspension AIR BODY CONTROL, unique to the segment, DYNAMIC SELECT and the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, the new GLC is tailor-made for all driving situations on and off the road. State-of-the-art assistance systems and improved energy efficiency further support the new GLC's claim of setting a new benchmark in this segment. Compared to its predecessor, fuel consumption was lowered by up to 19%.

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

    Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.

2015 Belgian Grand Prix is a return to scheduled programming

    Mon, Aug 24 2015

With summer intermission over, the second half of the Formula One season commenced in the Belgian countryside at Spa-Francorchamps. After qualifying, it looked a lot like the first half of the season with just a few minor changes. Lewis Hamilton was even more dominant in his Mercedes-AMG Petronas than usual, regularly taking half a second out of his teammate in just the middle sector of the circuit. Teammate Nico Rosberg tightened it up a tad for his final hot lap, but Hamilton still took pole by 0.45 seconds ahead of Rosberg in second. With his Williams back at a power track, Valtteri Bottas got himself up to third, although more than a second behind Hamilton. Romain Grosjean in the Lotus in fourth had his best qualifying performance since his fourth-place grid spot at the 2013 US Grand Prix. This was a huge boon for Lotus, the team facing another financial issue off track that threatened to have its cars impounded as soon as they left the circuit. Grosjean had to have his gearbox changed before the conclusion of six races, however, so the five-spot penalty meant he'd actually line up ninth for the race. Sergio Perez put the Sahara Force India in fifth, where we're more used to seeing his teammate Nico Hulkenberg, just ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing in sixth. Felipe Massa got the second Williams in seventh, in front of the second Lotus of Pastor Maldonado in eighth. Then came the first and only Ferrari in the top ten, Sebastian Vettel qualifying ninth after a disappointing Saturday for the scuderia; teammate Kimi Raikkonen suffered gearbox issues and qualified way down in 16th. Carlos Sainz took tenth in the Toro Rosso. A new start procedure in Belgium meant drivers had to handle clutches on their own, without the engineers finely tuning bite points between the garage and the start line. That was in conjunction with another rule limiting the kinds of radio messages possible between engineers and drivers, aiming to put more of the car in the drivers' hands. After an aborted start when Hulkenberg's car quit while sitting on the grid, Hamilton made the most of the new procedure. His start wasn't amazing but he beat everyone else off the line, while those behind were alternately getting bogged down or leaping ahead. Midway through the first lap the top ten was Hamilton, Perez, Ricciardo, Bottas, Rosberg, Vettel, Maldonado, Grosjean, Massa, Marcus Ericsson. At the end of 43 laps, Hamilton would still be in the lead.
