You're looking a really strong, low-mileage Disco II, where all the typical maintenance issues have already been addressed.  In the past two weeks this truck has had:

Full transmission fluid replacement
Full brake fluid flush
Full coolant flush
Engine oil & filter replaced
New air filter
New power steering pump & fluid, plus new O-rings on the lines

And within the past six months, it's also had:

Throttle body coolant adapter plate replaced
Fuel vapor evaporative purge valve replaced
New pollen/dust air filter element under the hood (the long skinny one that most people ignore)
New oxygen sensor (Sensor 1, Bank 1; the other 3 all test out fine)
Replacement neutral safety switch (rivets failed on the first one, allowing water and gunk to get inside)
New 4-wire trailer harness adapter from Atlantic British
New retainer pin on driver's door strap
Various new finisher caps on wiper cowl & front seat armrests
In-dash vehicle-specific phone mount from ProClip USA -- you can buy a fitted cradle for your particular phone
New latching fitting for under-hood battery box lid
New press-pins for rear gate trim panel, and repair to moisture barrier underneath
New rear wiper arm
New wiper blades on all 3 wipers
Replacement gaiter/boot for handbrake
A replacement OEM in-dash CD player

It also has an add-on Bluetooth adapter from Grom Audio, which provides support for Bluetooth hands-free telephone use, Bluetooth streaming audio, and a standard aux-in audio connection and separate dedicated USB charging connector.  Note:  this replaces the factory CD changer, which is still mounted under the passenger seat but is disconnected.

The truck comes with two correct OEM remote keys, one of which is brand new and hasn't been used since I bought it.  All owner's manuals are also included in their little pouch.

It has the correct OEM front and rear rubber floor mats, and a new rear rubber cargo mat from Weathertech.  Tires are Falken on/off-road, in good condition.  Factory tools are all present and in good condition, including the storage pouch, which has no tears or zipper damage.  I suspect most of the tools haven't been used.

The car runs strong, all the necessary OBD2 system monitors test successfully, there is no evidence of head gasket problems, and every item I previously noticed needed attention has been addressed.

On the interior, the headliner is excellent, the seats are excellent, and I added the OEM heated seat switches and trim panel just a few months ago, so those work great as well.  All the power functions (seats, windows, mirrors, sunroofs) work great and at full/normal speed.  All in-dash switches, lights, and functions work 100%.

The correct factory retractable rear cargo cover is present, and I also have a hard-copy factory shop manual, two types of touch-up paint (a pen and a small spray can, both correct Oslo Blue), and an assortment of additional emblems and trim caps as spares.  For a bit of fun, I have Union Jack valve stem caps on the truck as well.

SPECIAL INCENTIVE FOR BUY-IT-NOW!

If you hit Buy It Now, or the truck ultimately sells via regular auction at or above the BIN price ($9999), the winning bidder will receive the following additional items:

1)  Crossbars for factory roof rack
2)  Rear hitch-mounted aluminum cargo carrier, able to carry 500 lbs, plus a folding ramp if you wanted to load a lawnmower, wheelchair, or whatever else you have
3)  Rear hitch-mounted folding double bike-rack
4)  Awesome Smithsonian National Zoo vinyl-cling rear window sticker

That's easily another $600 worth of accessories.

To be very clear:  none of these items will be included unless the truck sells AT OR ABOVE the original Buy It Now price.  If the truck is sent via transporter, rather than picked up in person, the rear seats will be folded down and these items will be stored in the back of the truck.  Neither the carrier nor the bike rack fit cleanly unless you first remove the spare tire, but they are just fine after that.  I will not give credit or otherwise discount the price in lieu of receiving those items; if you don't want them, I will keep them, but the price will stay the same.

If the truck sells above reserve but below the BIN price, and you want any of these items, I will add them for $200 each (for items 1-3, or 4 if you insist), just let me know which ones you want.

Truck is still being driven occasionally so mileage will increase a small amount.

Automotive Grade Linux will be the backbone of your connected car

Fri, Jan 6 2017

Creating a backend for a secure, reliable, and expandable infotainment system is costly and time consuming. The Linux Foundation, a non-profit organization, has set out to promote and advance the Linux operating system in commercial products. Automotive Grade Linux, or AGL, is a group within the Foundation that seeks to apply a Linux backend to a number of automotive applications in a variety of vehicles from various suppliers and manufacturers. AGL's goal is to create a common, unifying framework that allows developers and manufacturers to easily implement applications across platforms. Currently, the focus is on infotainment systems, but AGL has plans for instrument clusters, heads-up displays, and eventually active safety software. At CES, a display from Panasonic showed a completely digital and customizable dashboard that allows information and apps to be moved from the gauge cluster to the infotainment screen and back, all through the use of gesture and touch controls. Although the organization has been around for five years, it's really only been in the past three that the group has been working hand in hand with automakers and suppliers. The first two OEMs to participate, Toyota and Jaguar Land Rover, have since been joined by Mazda, Suzuki, Ford, and, as of this week, Daimler. The latter is important as until now most of AGL's partner's have been based in Japan or the US. Other partners include suppliers Denso, Renesas, Continental, Qualcomm, and Intel. AGL want's to supply roughly 80 percent of the backend, allowing partners to then finish and refine the Linux system for each individual application. Think of how the Android operating system is refined and customized for individual smartphones from Samsung, LG, and Motorola. While the final product looks different, developers can have an application that will work across all AGL systems. Because it is open source, anyone can use and develop for AGL. You can even go onto the group's website and download a copy right now. There is also a software development kit available that helps facilitate app creation on the platform. Vehicle development cycles take roughly five years, so there currently are no cars that run an AGL backbone available for consumers. AGL Executive Director Dan Cauchy says products should be hitting the market later this year, with even more coming in 2018. Right now, the industry is relatively fragmented when it comes to infotainment and related systems.

Genesis cars win accolades, offer value — so why are sales so bad?

Tue, Jul 31 2018

My high-school buddy Brent Cormier was so smitten with the Genesis G80 when he saw it at an event I hosted at SXSW in 2016 he bought a used 2013 Hyundai Genesis a short time later and fell in love with the car. "It surpasses my every expectation," said Cormier, a self-described "renaissance man" who owns and runs a real estate agency with his wife Laura, is a food service executive chef and part owner of Austin-based Thin the Herd Guitars. "I was locked into Mercedes and Audi for 10 years," he added. "And felt trapped in an endless pit of maintenance costs." After owning the Genesis over the past two years — including using it as an Uber and Lyft driver to earn extra cash — Cormier learned what some frugal luxury sedan buyers and a handful of car reviewers have discovered: Genesis offers great bang for the buck compared to other premium brands and can compete with the best in terms of performance, features and comfort. Hyundai's luxury brand also earned a prominent third-party endorsement last week when for the first time Genesis topped J.D. Power's 2018 APEAL study, surpassing German luxury-performance icon Porsche. The APEAL study (which stands for Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) "measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes," ranging from performance to comfort, and asks nearly 68,000 owners of new 2018 models to score vehicles on a 1,000-point scale. In its second year ranked as a stand-alone brand, Genesis earned an APEAL score that bumped it up 15 points to 884 and helped push it past Porsche — and past BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Cadillac, Land Rover and Lexus, in order of ranking. Last month, Genesis also topped J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey (IQS) for the first time this year. And both its models were awarded Top Safety Pick Plus ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, among 11 Plus ratings in all for Korean vehicles. Despite high J.D. Power rankings and great reviews, Genesis U.S. sales were off 50 percent for the first six months of 2018 compared to 2017, and in June Genesis sold only 796 vehicles — the first time U.S. numbers dropped below 1,000 in a month. Part of Genesis's APEAL and IQS success can be attributed to its small product lineup: just two models, the G80 and G90 sedans, with a third, the 2019 G70, launching later this year. And while those numbers may help in J.D.
