2014 Jaguar XFR-S super sedan is 550-HP worth of cool

The 2014 Jaguar XFR-S was considered last year, teased last week and now has been totally let loose. The most powerful sedan the company has ever made and the newest addition to its line of R-S performance cars - following the XKR-S - and we'll be getting even fewer of them than we thought. 200 had been the rumored allotment for the US, but the official word now is that we'll see just 100.
Each XFR-S will use the same 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that powers the XKR-S, meaning a 40-horsepower and 41-pound-foot bump over the XFR for 550 hp and 502 lb-ft in total. Shifting through the adaptive, eight-speed ZF transmission gets it from standstill to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, but for all that, it gets the same gas mileage as the XFR, aided by its stop/start system, and so doesn't get hit with a gas guzzler tax.
Other XKR-S bits have made the jump, including an upgraded suspension front and rear, the near-straight pipes for the cracking exhaust note we drank up like ambrosia and twenty-inch, six-spoke lightweight wheels that are an inch wider than on the XFR. Lateral stiffness is up 30 percent, the electronic systems have been recalibrated to handle the extra oomph, throttle response has been sharpened and can be made even sharper by going into Dynamic Mode.

Automakers who run their own racing teams enjoy the benefit of having top-flight professional racing drivers on call to help out with development work. Jaguar, unfortunately, has no such racing team, having sold its F1 operation to Red Bull back in 2004. So when it came time to put the C-X75 through its paces in this latest video, it turned to Felipe Massa. Why Massa, you ask? For one thing, having driven for so long for Ferrari, the Brazilian driver is used to applying his F1 skills in testing a supercar designed for the road. But since switching to Williams, he hasn't been called upon in that capacity. For another, it was Williams Advanced Engineering as much as Jaguar itself that spearheaded development of the C-X75. So Massa was the natural choice. The C-X75, for those who don't recall, represented Jaguar's plan to build a hybrid hypercar of its own. Having debuted way back in 2010 at the Paris Motor Show, the concept followed hot on the heels of the Porsche 918 concept unveiled earlier that year in Geneva – a predated by far the emergence of the McLaren P1 and LaFerrari. The original design called for a revolutionary powertrain combining a pair of micro-turbines and four individual electric motors in the wheels. When that proved unfeasible, Jaguar switched to a more conventional setup with a turbocharged hybrid powertrain. Unfortunately plans to put even that version into production were shelved. But the concept was revived for the filming of the latest James Bond movie Spectre. Check out the C-X75 being put through its paces by the eleven-time grand prix winner in the video above. Did you know, though, that frosty temps are also popular tools for simply recovering from a rough training session?
Well, we're guessing Jaguar Land Rover knew that, as the British company was kind enough to loan out its climactic testing chamber to Jaco van Gass and Luke Darlington, a pair of veterans wounded in their service to Queen and Country. Van Gass, a former private in the Royal Army, and Darlington, a Royal Marine, are attempting to earn a spot on the British Armed Forces cycling team for the upcoming Invictus Games.
The Games, inspired by the Warrior Games held in the United States, are a sporting competition reserved for injured servicemen and women, either active duty or veterans, and is slated to take place from September 10 to 14 in London's former Olympic venues. Van Gass lost his left arm below the elbow after getting hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (he also suffered from a collapsed lung, punctured internal organs, severe shrapnel and blast wounds, a broken tibia and a fractured knee). Darlington, meanwhile, suffered a traumatic brain injury during action in Afghanistan, and he now suffers from weakness in his right side and cognitive issues.
