Audi welcomes Porsche back to Le Mans like any sibling would

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

Ah, sibling rivalry. It really is a beautiful thing. It's even more beautiful when said siblings are automakers with very, very well-known racing histories. That's how you get videos like this, which is Audi's way of welcoming Porsche back to the top flight of Le Mans racing.
Yes, Audi has taken its R18 E-Tron Quattro back onto public roads, wowing schoolboys and scaring farmers (who appear to be riding classic Porsche tractors), as it travels from Ingolstadt to Zuffenhausen, just to taunt its corporate frenemy.
Take a look below for a video to see just what that teasing looks like.

2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

It's hard to say what a coupe is anymore. Is it merely a car with two doors? Does it have to have an arching roofline? Do frameless windows count for anything? Can a five-door hatchback or even an SUV be a coupe? At some point in the last few years, nearly everything we thought made a coupe a coupe has been challenged by something that calls itself a coupe, but to most people isn't. Our friends at BMW have led most of this line of questioning.
The new 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is one of the latest Bimmers to challenge the moniker (which also challenges the idea of "Gran," for that matter), and unlike some of its other "coupe" variations - we're looking at you, X6 - this one is a pretty one. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the 4 Series, which is itself a two-door version of the 3 Series. Huh? Wouldn't that simply make it another 3 Series? Of course, but this one is prettier, as it uses the 4's sexier body styling, with its lower nose, wider-looking stance and edgier lighting graphics. It is also technically a five-door hatchback, not a sedan per se, and it utilizes frameless side door glass, which apparently does count for something in BMW coupe-land. Significantly, the 4 Gran Coupe's wheelbase is identical to the two-door; if it was longer - as is the case with the 3 Series and 5 Series hatchbacks - that might make it a "Gran Turismo." Confused yet?
We recently got our first chance to drive the 4 Series Gran Coupe at a press launch in Spain, and while the only version we were given was a rear-drive 428i Gran Coupe with the M Sport contents, the harrowing roads around Bilbao gave us a good idea of what this car is all about from a driving dynamics standpoint. Here's some of what we found:

2015 Buick Verano gets styling tweak, loses 6-speed manual

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

Well, all good things must come to an end. For 2015, the Buick Verano's experiment with a manual transmission will cease, as the American manufacturer has announced it will discontinue the 6MT in the turbocharged version of its compact sedan. According to Buick, the take rate on the Verano Turbo 6MT was (unsurprisingly) low, leading to its discontinuation.
That's not the only bit of news for the Verano, though. After a few years on the market, Buick has seen fit to refresh the popular sedan. The visual changes aren't huge, really, with subtle tweaks to the headlights and taillights. We'd bargain that the average passer-by wouldn't notice a difference between the two.
The main aesthetic change is a new appearance package, available on the mid-range Convenience and Leather option groups. Unimaginatively called just that - Appearance Package - it offers up a new paint color, Desert Dusk Metallic, as well as a grille treatment and a rear spoiler. The new package is, however, limited to naturally aspirated models.

Rubber woman enlisted to help sell VW Golf in UK

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

We're tempted to just let you gaze at the picture above, and the gallery, then point you to the relevant auction on eBay UK and let you figure out the rest... but we'll at least say a few words. Auction site user Gawjusberni of East Grinstead, West Sussex, United Kingdom wants to move his Volkswagen Golf 1.8 MkII. However, Mr. - we'll assume we're dealing with a mister - Gawjusberni didn't see fit to list the model year, the mileage, the features or any of the usual minutiae found in such listings. But he did see fit to have a model, "Sandy," swing by.
She's the delightful doll in the teacher's outfit, probably just come from explaining the commutative property to a bunch of similarly rubberized elementary school dolls. In the short and only partially legible description, Mr. Gawjusberni says that Sandy "reports as follows" that the Golf has a "good engine, gearbox, clutch and drives well." She also knows how to point out rust, tender-like, on her knees. So there.
But it appears Sandy isn't a DIY'er and doesn't want to do the fixing up the Golf requires, so she passed on the purchase. Her loss, your gain, with bidding up to just 205 pounds ($344 US) at the time of writing.

Elemental RP-1 may be world's lightest sports car, weighs under 1,000 pounds

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

The British boutique sports car industry is fascinating when you think about it. For such a relatively small country known for its wet weather for much of the year, consider all of the open-top Caterham, Ariel, Morgan products, not to mention many other small brands pumping out cars. The latest company hoping to fill the need a street-legal, track day racer is called Elemental Cars, and its first creation is the featherweight RP-1.
To stand apart in the crowded market, you have to do something special. The RP-1's trick is its planned weight of just 992 pounds (450 kilograms) in a carbon fiber tub with under-car aerodynamic aids to create downforce. Propulsion comes from a mid-mounted, tuned, 2.0-liter Ford EcoBoost engine producing 280 horsepower, mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. With so little weight to push around, the small, turbocharged engine should be plenty powerful.
Beyond just the claims of power and light weight, Elemental says that the RP-1 will be road legal in the UK, and inside the two-seater there will be a racing-inspired, feet-up driving position with an adjustable seat and pedals to fit drivers even over six-feet tall. It will have a few amenities for occupants, too, like a heated footwell and traction control, plus data logging and an on-board camera for the track.

Brabus boosts Mercedes GLA to 400 hp

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

Crossovers are hugely popular at the moment. It didn't take long for automakers to realize that buyers would pay extra for premium versions of the little 'utes, and Mercedes-Benz recently jumped into the market in Europe with the GLA-Class (that'll be heading Stateside shortly). The Mercedes specialist tuners at Brabus are now welcoming it into the lineup with a whole array of upgrades.
Of course, Brabus is mostly associated with its high performance engines, and the company has two kits available for the GLA. If you really want some power under the hood, it has a kit for the GLA45 AMG that raises power to 394 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, up from 355 hp and 332 lb-ft in the stock version. It's enough to get the CUV to 62 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds. A further mod bumps the top speed to 168 mph. If you're a bit more economical, the GLA220 CDI is available with a 40-hp upgrade to raise power output to 208 hp and 302 lb-ft, allowing it to hit 62 mph in 8.0 seconds.
The GLA is somewhere in between a high-riding hatchback and a tiny SUV, and Brabus is taking care of both buyers with its list of modifications. It has two suspension kits available: one raises the ride by 1.2 inches, and the other drops the stock height by an inch. The bodykit also mixes sport and off-road with a complicated front airdam replacement and accentuated side gills. At the rear, buyers can spec a rear spoiler and new apron that simulates an underbody guard. The company's famous monoblock wheels are also available in sizes up to 21 inches.

Next Nissan GT-R to take cues from GT-R LM Nismo Le Mans entry

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

For those wondering why Nissan named its coming Le Mans Prototype the GT-R LM Nismo, colliding the two worlds of sports car and prototype racing, an article in Autocar might have the answer. The deeper union is explained by saying that the next-generation GT-R will use "hybrid technology that will closely align it" with the GT-R LM Nismo.
The point could be further driven home by the fact that the GT-R LM Nismo will begin its FIA endurance racing campaign next year, and the next GT-R is due to debut next year as a 2016 model. The expectation is that it will use a hybrid system possibly dubbed R-Hybrid and perhaps developed by Williams. Just like performance car makers Ferrari and Audi, Nissan wants its racing efforts to pay off with road car technology, company vice president Andy Palmer saying they "want to link technological linkages between future evolutions of the GT-R and evolutions of what we do in LMP1, and the two do go in both directions."
The bigger question is, with the GT-R getting hybrid assistance, will it also get the weight gain that usually comes with it? Enthusiasts would love to see the trend reversed, especially on a car that's already no lightweight.

2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 is most powerful production GM car ever with 650 hp, 650 lb-ft

Fri, 06 Jun 2014

Well, consider the cat officially out of the bag. Nearly five months after its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show touting "at least 625 horsepower," the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has now been SAE-certified to produce an impressive 650 hp.
For reference, the new Z06 is bested only by the following bits of exotica: the Ferrari LaFerrari, the McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Lamborghini Aventador and the Ferrari FF. That's some mighty good company.
Complementing the 650 supercharged ponies is an equally impressive 650 pound-feet of torque. Lovely as that second figure is, we really need to break down where the power is available. According to Chevy, 457 pound-feet of torque is available at idle, while 96 percent of peak torque arrives by 2,800 rpm. Honestly, if the Z06 can't hit 60 in under three seconds, we'll be shocked. Talk about a whole lot to handle.

Porsche Cayenne spied unconstrained by camouflage

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Meet the facelifted Porsche Cayenne. Our eagle-eyed spy shooters captured this example of Porsche's freshened SUV virtually devoid of camo, giving us our clearest look yet at what the eventual mid-cycle work will do to the strong-selling Cayenne.
The overall changes do, indeed, look minor, with a reprofiled intake being the most obvious item. The headlights are still covered, so we don't know what kind of jeweling has been done, but the shape does appear identical to the current model. Overall, the changes appear totally in line with a mid-cycle refresh.
As we explained previously, a plug-in Cayenne is on the way. It will join a crop of engines that is likely to be similar to what's on offer today, with naturally aspirated, turbocharged, hybrid and diesel variants released over time.

2015 Subaru Outback priced at $24,895*

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Just a few weeks after announcing the pricing for the 2015 Legacy sedan, Subaru is getting ready to roll out the all-new 2015 Outback with a base price $24,895, plus an $850 destination charge. Like its platform-mate, the styling could be described as an evolution of the previous generation, but the company claims big changes underneath to improve comfort. It's scheduled to starting hitting dealers this summer.
The Outback continues to share most of its mechanical bits with the Legacy, including its engines. The 2.5-liter boxer-four-cylinder gets a touch more potent with 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, and better fuel economy at 25 miles per gallon city, 33 highway and 28 combined. The 3.6-liter flat-six-engine has 256 hp and 247 lb-ft and also sees a marginal economy improvement at 20/27/22. All models now come standard with a CVT, and Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gets some improvements with standard Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, Active Torque Vectoring and X-Mode, a system to increase traction when needed.
The base 2.5i trim goes for $25,745 (all prices after destination), up $425 from last year's CVT base model. It comes standard with a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a USB port and AUX input. The 2.5i Premium trim retails at $27,845, but the upgrade nets buyers dual climate zones, a 10-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, all-weather package and a 7-inch infotainment system. The 2.5i Limited costs $30,845 and includes leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels, a 12-speaker stereo, heated rear seats, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and a power tailgate. The top The 3.6R Limited trim is $33,845 and in addition to the bigger engine features HID low-beam headlights and stainless steel dual exhaust tips.

Mercedes to open new campus in Long Beach, CA

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Toyota might be leaving Southern California, but Mercedes-Benz is doubling-down on the region with a newly announced, 1.1 million-square-foot West Coast Campus in Long Beach, CA. It combines three currently separate divisions of the company into one place to increase overall efficiency.
Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster and Mercedes Vice President of Sales Dietmar Exler broke ground on the huge, new facility that was formerly the site of a Boeing 717 factory. As you can see from the photo on the right, they're both pretty happy about it.
The new campus will be split into two buildings that will sit on 52.2 acres of land across the street from the Long Beach Airport. The venue will open in the first quarter of 2015.

2015 BMW X6 stays the course with more power, RWD model

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

What would this world be without the BMW X6? Oh, sure, the whole coupe-crossover design trend surely would have started somewhere, but BMW was the first, launching its odd duck back in 2008. Much as we like to harp on the X6 (for being less functional and more expensive than the X5 on which it's based), people around the world sure do seem to like the thing, BMW having sold some 250,000 examples since the CUV's birth. And as you first saw thanks to leaked images this morning, the second-generation X6 has just arrived.
The shape is familiar, as are specific styling elements like the larger headlamps (now available with a full-LED treatment) and taillamps, mimicking those found on the X5. Two trims are available - xLine and M Sport - the former taking a more subdued approach, while the latter uses the traditionally bulgy and aggressive M-badged kit, with larger air intakes and matte aluminum grille bars. All X6s come standard with 19-inch wheels, and 20s are optional.
Regardless of trim, BMW will now offer the X6 in three guises here in the United States: sDrive35i, xDrive35i and xDrive50i. Dissecting the nomenclature, that means the first two models will be powered by BMW's 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, good for 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The sDrive X6 uses rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive, of course, uses all-wheel drive. Moving up, the xDrive50i uses the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as its predecessor, though power has been increased to 450 hp and 480 lb-ft. All X6 models are fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and BMW says that the new powertrains are more efficient than before, though official fuel economy numbers have not yet been released.

Ghosn predicts autonomous cars on the roads by 2018, if laws allow

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Things appear to be going well inside Nissan's autonomous vehicle development program. Until now, the automaker believed that self-driving cars would be ready for major markets like the US by 2020. However, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is now speeding up that prediction to 2018 in some places, assuming that local laws are ready to accept the computer-controlled vehicles.
"The problem isn't technology, it's legislation, and the whole question of responsibility that goes with these cars moving around," said Ghosn in a speech in France recorded by Reuters. He predicted that the first sales could begin in France, Japan and the US by 2018 and expand elsewhere in 2020.
The alliance has been among the forefront of automakers working on self-driving cars. Nissan has an autonomous Leaf (pictured above) test car that is licensed to drive on Japanese roads. Renault showed off an version of its Zoe EV earlier this year called the Next Two, that could pilot itself at speeds up to 18 miles per hour, and that the company predicted would be ready by 2020.

Shifter made from light switches is less batty than it sounds

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

When Skynet becomes self aware and takes control of all the autonomous cars and The Internet of Things and anything else with a computer, the resistance movement will want to track down guys like YouTube user Dan Mann for lessons in post-apocalyptic living. Mann has a 1979 Chevy C30 dually, and its SM465 manual transmission didn't agree with a herniated disk in his back. So he grabbed a General Motors 4L80E automatic transmission off his brother's truck and fitted it to his truck, jettisoning the computer controller and instead using light switches and a floor shifter to change gears.
Yes, light switches. The 4L80E has four solenoids, two for shifting, one for torque converter lockup and one for line pressure. Mann couldn't control the line pressure without the computer, so the transmission always runs at maximum line pressure which causes slightly harsher shifts. He installed one switch on the dash to control the torque converter, and two more - one of them black - for shifting. The speedometer? The transmission has an electric speedo output, so Mann picked up an Android off Craigslist and he uses an app for the display.
When he puts the floor shifter in drive, he flips the light switches to change gears. Or he can set the switches and change gears with the floor shifter. It's kooky to read about - and kinda kooky to watch, frankly - but it's neat and it works. Check it out in the video below.

Enjoy a look at the World's Fastest Police Fleet in Dubai

Fri, Jun 6 2014

Last year, it seemed like nearly every month there was news of an additional hypercar joining the fleet of the Dubai Police. It was shocking enough when the force showed off its Lamborghini Aventador, but the armada kept growing to include even more exotic vehicles like an Aston Martin One-77 and eventually even a Bugatti Veyron. To understand the point of building this assortment of supercars, the crew from Vocativ went behind the scenes with the Dubai Police and into the immaculate warehouse where the cars are kept. The Veyron and Aventador are just the headline-grabbers. When their Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R are getting short shrift, you know it must have a wild collection. The video is a fascinating look inside the force and gets some insight into why the Dubai Police would spend around $6.5 million to build this collection. It certainly isn't to catch speeders... Scroll down to learn what it's all about. News Source: Vocativ via YouTube Bugatti Lamborghini Police/Emergency Videos dubai dubai police

Ram truck owner who stopped lawbreaking teen joyride gets truck repaired for free

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Here is a story that should make you feel a little better about modern society. Bryson Rowley, the concerned man in Utah who put himself in danger to stop an out-of-control, joyriding teen, is getting his damaged pickup fixed free of charge.
It all occurred after a kid stole his grandfather's Hyundai Veloster. As part of a police chase, he went speeding through a park where children were playing and into a neighborhood. When it appeared that the pursuit was returning to the park, Rowley got into his Ram and drove into the little, white coupe instantly stopping it. However, after the collision, his truck needed a new front bumper.
People in the community have banded together to make sure that Rowley didn't have to pay for any repairs, according to Car Throttle. A company called Fusion Bumpers even shipped out a replacement to him. It's nice to see that people putting out a helping hand to repair the damage to his truck.

Dancer who portrays Kia hamster guilty of disability fraud

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Tisk, tisk, dancing hamster. Kia's trio of anthropomorphic rodents may be down a member as the actor that portrays one of the dancing hamsters has been arrested on charges of disability fraud.
According to The Huffington Post, 27-year-old LeRoy Barnes accepted over $51,000 in disability payments following a workplace injury in 2010. While accepting the money, he's accused of performing under aliases, in addition to his costumed work for Kia.
"Fraudulently collecting disability benefits is not only illegal, it disrespects legitimately injured Californians who are unable to work," Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said in a release obtained by HuffPo.

BMW almost ready to roll out new 2 Series cabriolet

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

The 2 Series is a relatively new member of the BMW family, having been spun off of the 1 Series (itself one of the company's youngest lines) just last year. So far the range has been split between the Active Tourer and the 2 Series Coupe, but soon the latter will breed a new compact convertible to take the place of the outgoing 1 Series cabriolet, and here we have our best look at it yet.
Spied with the most minimal camouflage and its top down while undergoing its final rounds of development testing, this pre-production 2 Series cabrio looks about ready for show time. While the Active Tourer is based on a different front-drive platform, this convertible is, as you might have guessed, essentially a 2 Series Coupe with a folding fabric roof. That means rear-wheel drive (or potentially all-wheel drive if BMW extends its availability from the coupe to the convertible) win either 228i or M235i specification - both of them turbocharged, the former with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter four and the latter with the 320-hp, 3.0-liter inline-six.
Considering that BMW got an approximately $8k premium for the 1 Series convertible over the coupe, expect the 2 Series cabrio to start at a little over $40k for the 228i and top out at around $53k for the M235i xDrive convertible. That is, assuming BMW offers it in that top spec, because at that rate we're getting perilously close to the $54,900 base price of the 435i convertible.

WRX Concept styling may transfer to production Impreza, next WRX

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Remember the original concept that previewed the latest generation Subaru WRX? If not, then just look above for a gallery of photos following its debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show. We loved it, and thus, were sort of disappointed when we first saw the less-aggressive production model.
It's not that the production 2015 WRX is ugly, per se. It just doesn't have the gaping grille, four-door coupe lines or squinting headlights that give the concept so much verve. But as it turns out, Subaru might have realized that it was on the right track with the more assertive styling. Rumors coming out of Australia suggest that the shape could form the basis for the next-generation Impreza, and next WRX, along with a major platform shift.
Subaru chief designer Mamoru Ishii tells Motoring that that the next-generation car will ditch the rather utilitarian current design in favor of something more exciting. Like the WRX concept, the design will start wide at the bottom for an aggressive stance and taper up to the roof. That styling would likely get even more aggressive for the next 'Rex.

Toyota finds profit in Europe thanks to hybrid sales

Thu, Jun 5 2014

In the land of diesel, Toyota appears to be making money its own way and thereby making more of it. The Japanese automaker is taking on Europe's diesel-centric ways by substantially boosting sales of hybrids on the continent. That, along with cost cutting measures, has increased the company's European profitability, Automotive News says, citing recent remarks by Toyota's European operations chief Didier Leroy. Toyota, which lost money in Europe between 2008 and 2011, started turning things around two years ago by cutting labor at places like UK factories while consolidating production of models such as the Auris and Yaris hybrid vehicles. During the most recently completed financial year, Toyota Europe reported earnings that were up 75 percent from the year before, despite revenue being up just five percent. The company also aims to sell at least 1 million vehicles in Europe by next year and is boosting sales in countries like Russia. Late last year, Didier told Bloomberg News that Toyota's European market share was rising about one percentage point a year, while production at Toyota's factories in countries like France, Turkey and the UK were running at full capacity. Toyota estimated at the time that hybrids accounted for about a fifth of Toyota's European sales.

Honda and Mario Andretti cite pedestrians for excessive slowness

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Honda and the Andretti family have a lot to celebrate at the moment. Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay won the 2014 Indianapolis 500 in his Honda-powered car, and Marco Andretti, Mario's grandson, also managed to take the third step on the podium. Apparently, the victory is making them feel magnanimous because Honda and Mario Andretti are giving the chance to ride with him in a two-seat, open wheel car.
To promote the contest, they created the Honda Speed Patrol to ticket anyone going too slow. It's an interesting idea, and the chance to ride with Andretti would be the opportunity of a lifetime. Perhaps the biggest shock of the video, though, might be when you realize how short Mario is when you see him milling about in public. Scroll down to watch one of America's most respected racers cite people in Chicago for being too slow.

2015 Volkswagen Golf TSI

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

Contrary to what you may have assumed, the Volkswagen Golf was not named after the sport. Rather, when the car was being developed as the successor to the Beetle, "Golf," which is German for "Gulf," was meant to pay homage to the Gulf Stream, a powerful and swift Atlantic Ocean current.
Volkswagen did eventually start to play on the shared nomenclature of the car's name and the sport when the product hit the global market (note the dimpled shift knob). But, this little anecdote exemplifies something that has always been true about the small hatchback: There's more to it than meets the eye.
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf, now in its seventh generation and its fortieth year, continues its tradition of being a delightful small car full of surprises. It looks a bit quirky and aloof, but it boasts sporty handling and a refined comportment. It comes with a European badge, but it costs about the same as its domestic equivalents. It appears quite small, but comes with a spacious interior and big cargo area.

Dubai Police Drive The World's Fastest Police Car

Thu, Jun 5 2014

For Dubai Police, going from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds is just another day at the office. The news site Vocative scored a sneak peak inside the Dubai Police force's stable. Even in a city known for its outrageous wealth and opulence, the fleet is jaw-dropping. Tucked in among $6 million dollars worth of extreme machines is the crown jewel of the police's garage, a Bugatti Veyron. The Veyron is one of the worlds fastest and, at $1.6 million, the most expensive production car on the market. With a staggering 1,001 horsepower engine that can run the Veyron up to 267 mph, the Dubai police could catch any criminal they set their sights on. Instead, they use the Veyron, along with its Audi, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bentley and other luxury automobiles, for marketing and outreach purposes. Seem like a waste of some serious power? At least the Dubai police actually drive their supercars. The Los Angeles Police Department received a donated Lamborghini Gallardo for its fleet. Their Lambo will be displayed at charity events only. Bugatti Police/Emergency Supercars

Dancer who portrays Kia hamster accused of disability fraud

Tsk, tsk, dancing hamster. Kia's trio of anthropomorphic rodents may be down a member, as the actor that portrays one of the dancing hamsters has been arrested on charges of disability fraud. Upcoming new BMW X6 leaks out ahead of full reveal

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

The X5 may have been the first BMW crossover on the market when it arrived in 2000, opening the door to more high-riding Bavarians to follow, but it's been replaced twice over now. The X3 is on its second generation, and with the X1 having been introduced in 2009 and the X4 soon to hit showrooms, that makes the X6 - introduced in 2008 - the oldest crossover in the BMW lineup. But it won't be for much longer.
Soon BMW will reveal the all-new X6, based on the latest X5 but with that tell-tale slanted roofline. But before it gets the chance, a handful of images have leaked their way all over the Internet to give us an advance look at what to expect.
The overall shape of the new X6 comes across as familiar, if a bit less of an awkward take on the vehicle that (for better or worse) launched the crossover coupe segment. Up front the twin kidney grilles and headlights are larger, in keeping with the latest BMW design language, and the bumper less horizontal and more dynamic. Towards the back there's a sharp crease above the wheel arch blending into the more rakishly shaped tail lights, while the metallic vent behind the front wheel arch lends the flank an even sportier appearance.

Lincoln releases power and economy ratings for 2015 MKC with 2.3L EcoBoost

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

As the first 2015 MKC crossovers slip into dealerships, Lincoln has confirmed power and fuel economy ratings for the compact crossover's optional 2.3-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder engine.
The new range-topping powerplant, thus far otherwise unavailable in the Blue Oval kingdom, will net a healthy 285 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 305 pound-feet of torque from 2,750 revs. Those figures represent gains of 10 hp and 5 lb-ft over earlier estimates, putting the handsome new compact CUV in the hunt with up-engined rivals from Audi and BMW. (A variant of the 2.3L will shortly find its way into the engine bay of the 2015 Ford Mustang, albeit with a number of key changes, including north-south orientation.)
In the MKC, the new engine will net 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 on the highway with standard all-wheel drive, meaning it only loses a single mile per gallon in the city cycle versus the 240-hp, 270-lb-ft 2.0L EcoBoost model when fitted with all-wheel drive. Both engines rely on the same six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

McLaren Automotive posts first yearly profit

Thu, Jun 5 2014

The automotive division of McLaren has just returned its first yearly profit, netting 4.5 million pounds ($7.5 million at today's rates) in pre-tax profit and 12.4 million pounds ($20.7 million) in operating profits on revenue of 285.4 million pounds ($478.1 million). McLaren is only expecting things to get better, too, with the announcement of the sub-650S P13 set to increase sales to 4,000 units per year. As for the brand's latest model, the 650S, there are already over 1,000 orders for the new coupe and convertible. The British brand will also offer a limited run of track-based P1 hypercars, although they'll only be available to the 375 fabulously wealthy customers who ordered the road-going version of the high-performance hybrid. Mini stretches out with new Hardtop 4 door [w/video] [UPDATE]

Thu, 05 Jun 2014

UPDATE: Information on US availability, specification and nomenclature added to the updated text below.
Few automakers have managed to spin off as many variants of essentially one vehicle as Mini has. The second generation produced even more versions than the first, and now that the third generation is upon us, the process is starting all over again. The jury may still be out on whether parent company BMW will roll out as many body-styles of this latest Mini as it did with the last, but here's our first indication.
Following the introduction of the new three-door Mini hatchback at the LA Auto Show, the Anglo-Saxon marque has introduced a new five-door model. Or four-door, depending on which Mini office you're speaking to: while this new model - an addition to the lineup and not a direct replacement for anything previously offered - is called the Mini 5 door by the factory, here in the US it's called the Mini Hardtop 4 door. Whatever you call it, though, this new Mini is essentially the same as the three-door model (or two-door model with a tailgate), only with - you guessed it - two extra doors. The new Clubman will be a separate model altogether.

Minivan market not what it used to be, but margins make up for it

Residual values for last year's minivans are higher than they were in 2000.
Much like the station wagon was the shuttle of Baby Boomer generation, the minivan has been the primary means of transport for Generations X and Y. Just as the boomers abandoned the Country Squire, though, those kids that were toted around in Grand Caravans and Windstars are adults, and they certainly don't want to be seen in the cars their parents drove.

McLaren planning P13 GT with unconventional trunk

Thu, Jun 5 2014

It was just a couple of months ago that we last brought you word on P13, the project being undertaken by McLaren to slot in a new entry-level model below the above-pictured 650S. Speaking with McLaren personnel at the launch of the latter, we said that the P13 would come in multiple bodystyles – which is to say, more than just a coupe and convertible. Now Car and Driver says it knows what that third bodystyle will be. According to an unnamed inside source in Woking, C/D reports that, in addition to a two-seat coupe and Spider, the P13 (or whatever it's ultimately called for public consumption) will be offered as a GT model. And just what will the difference be between the coupe and GT, you ask? Not necessarily the addition of extra seats in the back: according to Car and Driver, that will be a luggage compartment aft of the engine and passenger compartment. The resulting form, we understand, will resemble a Jaguar E-Type coupe, which could be what we were actually hearing about a couple of years ago when rumors surfaced of a 12C shooting brake in the works. One way or another, it would be an interesting development, potentially as novel as the Ferrari FF but at the opposite end of the spectrum and with its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 – albeit slightly detuned – still located amidships and still driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed DCT. We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out, but with Frank Stephenson working on the design, we bet it'll be a stunner, if a slightly unconventional one.
