Alfa Romeo reportedly developing a Giulia-based coupe

Much like classic, rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo sedans, the Giulia might gain a coupe counterpart. The possible Alfa Romeo coupe wouldn't just be a cruiser, as it's rumored to get a fantastical-sounding 641 horsepower output. British Autocar's sources say Alfa Romeo is developing a coupe based on the Giulia, with the front end carried over and a coupe body designed from that point back. Autocar says the coupe could be unveiled this year and hit the market in 2019. Alfa Romeo sold some 8,900 Giulias last year in the United States, and the coupe could function as a halo car. As for the powertrain, the standard version would utilize the Giulia's two-liter turbo engine good for 197 and 276 horsepower in various guises, but the absolute big deal would be the 2.9 turbo V6, which would gain an F1-style energy recovery system to boost the power to near-Ferrari levels. As in 641 horsepower, which is hundreds more than possible competitors from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz have. The non-ERS, 500 hp version could also be available. Sources say a name for the coupe could be Sprint, which certainly carries a cachet, but as Autocar notes, "GTV" would correspond to Alfa Romeo's RWD history a little better — take for example the 1970s Alfetta and Alfetta GTV sedan-coupe combination. CAR adds details to Alfa Romeo's five-year plan

Much of this month's issue of CAR Magazine is devoted to Alfa Romeo and what we can expect from it in the next five years. Of course, they unfortunately went to print before FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne died (and it took a while for it to land in my mail box), so certain elements are bound to change in light of new leadership. Nevertheless, there are plenty of interesting tidbits to chew on. First, there are a few more details regarding the Alfa Romeo 8C super car, which was confirmed during FCA's recent five-year plan announcement. Unlike the last front-engined, rear-drive 8C, the new one would be mid-engined with the rear wheels powered by a version of the Quadrofoglio turbo V6 brought up to the 600-horsepower range, and some amount of electrification added to the front axle. CAR indicates a total output of around 800 hp and 660 pound-feet of torque. A carbon fiber monococque would help keep the weight down, and to keep cost down, reporter Georg Kacher posits its production will be farmed out to a third party like Dallara. Both pricing and performance will be interesting with the 8C: how much does FCA want Alfa Romeo to compete with Ferrari? Without Marchionne leading both, perhaps it won't matter. View 19 Photos Then again, how much it wants Alfa to compete with Maserati might, as the future Giulia-based GTV coupe could do just that. Apparently, the coupe and convertible range is intended to compete with the entire breadth of the German two-door catalogue, from 4 Series and M4, to C- and E-Class Coupes. Presumably it'll therefore be more than just a Giulia coupe. Regular, high-performance and plug-in hybrid versions are mentioned. Finally, as was part of the previously announced five-year plan, there will be SUVs introduced on either side of the Stelvio. Apparently, it was originally thought that the smaller of the two would be produced on the cheaper Renegade/500X platform, but that has been nixed in favor of the Giulia's "Giorgio" platform to maintain a higher degree of engineering sophistication. If so, good call. The bigger of the two new Alfa SUVs would also be on the platform, and since it's been rumored that the next Jeep Grand Cherokee will be as well, it'll be interesting to see how similar those two mid-size SUVs will potentially be. Alfa Romeo unveils more details about US-spec Giulia

Last November, Alfa Romeo unveiled some of the tech specs about the 2017 Giulia in the US, but now the company has released even more details about the lower trims ahead of their upcoming appearance at the New York Auto Show. We still don't officially know their prices, but the Giulia arrives here in three trims: a standard model, the mid-range Giulia Ti, and the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Giulia and Giulia Ti use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 276 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power routes through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels, and the sedans can reach 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds. The optional Q4 all-wheel drive system can send up to 60 percent of the torque to the front axle when necessary. However, there's no word yet how this layout affects performance. Even the lower rungs of the Giulia range have a sporty demeanor. Standard features include a seven-inch driver info display between the analog gauges, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and keyless start. Depending on model, they come with either a 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment system, which uses a rotary dial in the center console for the controls. There's also a huge range of customization, including optional Sport, Luxury, and Performance packages and 13 available exterior colors. The Quadrifoglio ups the performance ante with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 boasting 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which rockets the sedan to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. To maximize efficiency, the engine has stop-start and cylinder deactivation. Customers who want a little more can order optional carbon fiber shell Sparco seats, which Alfa claims are the lightest in the segment, and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes.
