Smart offers $75 lease deal to Car2go users in San Diego

Thu, Dec 11 2014

If you've been saving money by sharing a car instead of buying your own, then maybe you have enough left over to go lease one. Because if there's anything that sharing a car should teach you, it's to want your own, right? We're confused, too. Whatever the reasoning, Car2go users in San Diego are being offered an unusual – but darn affordable – deal on a new Smart ForTwo lease: just $75 a month for the Pure model (with $1,493 due at signing, plus government fees and taxes). To put that into Car2go carsharing terms, that's as much as it would cost to share the car for about 182 minutes (or for five hours at the $14.99 hourly max, if you're renting the car that way). The deal is only good for Car2go San Diego members and their family and friends at Smart Center San Diego until January 2, 2015. If you want the Passion model, it'll cost you $99 a month (plus the aforementioned $1,493 at signing). Smart sales a doing okay in the US this year. Through November 2014, Smart has sold 9,480 ForTwos in the US. That's up 13 percent from the 8,409 sold through November 2013. If you'd like to add to the total, and meet the qualifications, we've got the fine print disclosures below, including details on the 10,000 miles a year limit and a $395 turn-in fee. *Disclosure for pure model: Available only to qualified customers through Mercedes-Benz Financial services at only smart center San Diego only through 1/2/2015. On approved above average credit. Advertised lease payment based on MSRP of $14,370. All advertise prices exclude government fees and taxes, any finance charges, any dealer document processing charge, any electronic filing charge, and any emission testing charge. Cash Due at signing Includes $295 acquisition fee, first month's lease payment of $75, total due at signing $1,493 plus government fees and taxes. No security deposit required. Total payments equal $4,448. AT lease end, lessee pays for any amounts due under the lease, any official fees, and taxes related to the scheduled termination, excess wear and use plus 0.25/mile over 30,000 total miles, and a $395 turn-in fee. Purchase option at lease end for $8,478 plus taxes (and any other fees and charges due under the applicable lease agreement) in example shown. Specific vehicles are subject to availability and may have to be ordered. See dealer for details.

2016 Smart Forfour

Tue, Nov 25 2014

The Fortwo always has been – and always will be – the prototypical Smart car. While it has been far and away the brand's best seller, it's not the only model to to wear the moniker. A decade ago, Smart rolled out the larger Forfour, but like the brand's other models that have come and gone, it wasn't much of a success. Now, Smart is back and taking another stab at it with the introduction of this all-new Forfour. And this time, we think it's in a much better position to succeed. Where the previous model shared its underpinnings, production line and front-engined layout with the Mitsubishi Colt, the new Forfour was co-developed with – and will be produced alongside – the new Renault Twingo we drove recently. Like its predecessor (and its contemporary French cousin), the new Forfour is not presently earmarked to be offered in America. But curiosity got the better of us when we were offered the chance to drive it back to back with the Fortwo upon their launch in Barcelona. Driving Notes Like the smaller Fortwo, the new Forfour will be offered with a choice of two three-cylinder engines mounted all the way at the back: a normally aspirated 999cc engine (available in 59- or 70-horsepower states of tune) and a 898cc turbo kicking out 89 hp. Either engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch transmission (save for the lowest spec, which can only be had with the manual). We sampled the top-spec model, fitted with the same turbo engine as the Fortwo we'll get in the States, sending 89 hp and 100 pound-feet of torque through the five-speed manual straight down to the rear wheels. The Forfour's (relatively) great mass means that, even with forced induction, it still takes 11.2 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour from a standstill. That's a 0.8 seconds behind the Fortwo with the same powertrain, but a solid 4.7 seconds quicker than the next (naturally aspirated) version down. It hardly felt rapid, but it kept pace just fine with European city traffic. Regardless of spec, however, the rear-engined layout it shares with the Fortwo and Twingo makes the new Smart Forfour exceptionally agile. That it felt any less scrappy than the Fortwo is a testament only to the latter's agility, because compared to anything else on the road, the new Forfour will change direction like a frightened street cat.

Car2go turns your smartphone into carsharing key with Mobile Access

Mon, Nov 24 2014

For all the smarts in the Smart cars used in Car2go, the cars haven't been smart enough to talk to users' smart phones. At least, not in the way you might want them to talk to each other. Until now, Car2go users have had to carry a special card with them to gain access to the broad network of carsharing vehicles. Now, you can get in and drive using your phone and the Car2go app. Previously, the app would let you find a Car2go vehicle, but an update to allow Mobile Access. As long as you can update your app to version 2.0 (on iOS or Android), you can now use your phone to find, reserve and unlock a Car2go to start your trip and then lock up and end your trip when you're done. The standard card still works, as well. The slick new feature works on all 12,500 Car2go vehicles in North America. The service was also recently updated with Regional Access to allow any user in North America to use a Car2go in any other North American city. When the European fleet gets integrated, we'll be even more excited. Read more below. With your phone replacing the card, Car2go has gotten a lot easier to use. I've certainly missed out on drives when I've forgotten my cars. With one less thing to carry, I've got one more reason to share a car. CAR2GO OFFERS MOBILE ACCESS TO ITS GLOBAL FLEET Members Will Now Be Able to Begin car2go Trips with their Smartphone Free Membership and Drive Time For a Limited Time AUSTIN, TX (November 24th, 2014) -- car2go North America LLC, the largest, fastest-growing global carsharing company, announced today the launch of Mobile Access, an upgraded app feature that allows members to not only search for and reserve a car2go vehicle, but begin their car2go trip via their smartphones. Beginning today, Mobile Access will serve as an alternative to the company's member card, which was, until now, the only way to access a car2go vehicle and end a ride. "At car2go, we are focused on improving our service and providing the best experience for our members with their feedback," said Paul DeLong, CMO of car2go North America. "With the addition of Mobile Access, we're making it easier for our members to get in a car2go. Having options are everything – now, our members won't have to carry their membership card – they'll be able to drive in no time." Mobile Access works similarly to the member card, allowing members to unlock a car2go and start their trip. Members can also continue to use their member card if they prefer.

2016 Smart Fortwo to breed more potent Brabus version

Fri, 14 Nov 2014

Those in the market for a city car with a bit of pep are undoubtedly pleased that Daimler has slotted a turbocharged three-cylinder engine into its new Smart Fortwo. But it's the only engine confirmed so far for US dealers, and with only 89 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque on tap, there's still room for improvement. Fortunately Daimler is considering just such a prospect.
Speaking with Smart powertrain engineers while in Barcelona to drive the new Fortwo, Autoblog was told that the prospect of a more powerful Brabus model is indeed on the table, although details and exact specifications are still being worked out. We spotted just such a prototype under development this past summer, when our sources estimated the new Brabus model would offer between 105 and 120 hp. But looking at the relative increases which the venerable Daimler tuner has managed in the past, our appetites are whetted anticipating the possibility of something even more potent.
We could be looking at a new Smart Brabus with nearly 130 hp, which in a six-foot wheelbase could make it a real firecracker.

Bibendum 2014: Daimler studying China for Car2go expansion

Wed, Nov 12 2014

Despite a recent setback in the UK, Daimler's carsharing company Car2go remains in expansion mode. The company is currently studying the scene in China (and other countries) to see where the next batch of blue-and-white Smart Fortwo cars will land. "We are looking at the opportunities and doing a lot of market research about [China]." – Moovel China's Su Shasha Su Shasha, from Moovel China's business development department, would not confirm that Car2go would one day be available in China, but did tell AutoblogGreen, "We are looking at all kinds of locations and opportunities worldwide, and China is definitely one big market with many populated cities. We are looking at the opportunities and doing a lot of market research about it. We don't have any concrete plans for the details of the launch yet." Su wouldn't say how long Daimler has been studying China as a place to expand Car2go or when the results of the internal study would be made public. Car2go was on display at the 2014 Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Chengdu, China. Su said that the purpose of the cars on display was to gauge interest from the people attending the event. She did say that people were interested in the exhibit, so that's a start. Daimler is looking for more workers to bring Car2go to China. An online job opening for a "Trainee as Financial Analyst for Car2go China" says that the new hire will be responsible for "continuously refining the car2go China business case," supporting "the local management with business analysis on achieving the growth targets and the refinement of the business model based on the planned roll-outs" and making sure the Car2go plan doesn't run afoul of any local laws. Sounds pretty serious to us.

2016 Smart Fortwo

Mon, 10 Nov 2014

In the sixteen years since Daimler first introduced the Smart car, the micro city car market has grown significantly to the extent that the urban-oriented brand doesn't just have more competition to contend with these days than it did in the late 90s; for the first time it has real competition on its hands altogether. In other words, while the Smart Fortwo once had the micro city car market almost entirely to itself, new rivals have emerged to challenge its dominance.
It may be a long time, if ever, before slightly larger contenders like the Scion iQ and Volkswagen Up! catch up to the 1.6-million units Smart has moved since it first hit the market back in 1998, somehow never managing to turn a profit along the way. But the bottom line is that Smart's position in the market is far from assured, especially relying, as it has, on the same architecture for over a decade and a half.
So after strongly hinting at the way forward with a series of show cars, Daimler revealed the all-new Smart Fortwo and its bigger brother, the Forfour, in July ahead of its debut at last month's Paris Motor Show. With both the brand's future and its supremacy in the urban mobility market hanging in the balance, we boarded a flight to Barcelona to see what Daimler had up its short sleeve. What we found was a two-seat city car that's not just a substantial improvement over the model it replaces, but an altogether different beast- one which doesn't aspire to be everything to everyone, but just might be what drivers in the world's densest urban cores will need... and little more.

Car2go brings incentives to charging in San Diego

Thu, Oct 23 2014

Plugging in a vehicle to get power makes sense when that vehicle is owned by one person or family and – like most of the cars on the planet – sits still for most of the day. But when you're trying to share an EV, or a few hundred of them, charging time becomes doubly important. You need those electrons to move but every minute spent charging is time the car can't be shared. So, in San Diego, the all-electric Car2go program is changing how it gets more juice into its battery-powered Smart cars. While Car2go users have always been able to park at a charging station and plug in, Car2go has needed to use a fleet team to move the cars around and make sure they're charged up. To encourage users to leave the cars in a new downtown "Incentive Zone" (where, we presume, the fleet team will have an easier time recharging the cars), they can get free drive time just for parking the car in the right area. If the drive is over 10 minutes, they'll get a 10-minute credit. Since the Smart EDs can take up to six hours to charge, parking them in a central are should simplify things. The new policy started yesterday and the free minutes will last until the end of the year.

2016 Smart Fortwo and Forfour show their smiling new faces [w/videos]

Fri, 03 Oct 2014

The 2016 Smart Fortwo and Forfour are at the 2014 Paris Motor Show showing off their brand new looks for their latest generations, and the company hopes that an extensive list of changes can give the brand a much-needed boost.
The redesign definitely gives siblings a personality while keeping Smart's traditional looks. These happy-go-lucky hatchbacks have a slight upward curve with headlights in either corner that make both of them appear to be smiling. With about 40 different available color schemes, buyers should have no problem finding just the right shade to fit their style.
Underneath the jovial look is an all-new platform shared with the similarly quirky Renault Twingo. Mounted in the rear are a trio of available three-cylinder gasoline engines with 60-, 71- and 90-horsepower on offer. Gearbox options amount to either a five-speed manual or Smart's "twinamic" dual-clutch transmission.

Recharge Wrap-up: Smart Fortwo ED "Yo" Video; Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle Event highlights

Sat, Sep 20 2014

Last month, Smart used the Yo app to give free rides to San Franciscans in the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive. For those who are curious - or as Smart puts it, "electricurious" - about the event, but weren't in the Mission or SoMa neighborhoods on the day it went down, Smart filmed the fun to bring the rest of us along for the ride. In the short video, we get to see the action behind the scenes in Smart's mission control-style operation, as well as the riders' reactions to the tiny electric car. Check out the video below for more. The 2014 Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle Event took place at Millbrook last week. The show featured the latest in clean car technology. It included exhibitions, demonstrations and talks about the current state of green cars and of what's to come in the future. Green Car Guide summed up key details of the event, pointing out that new car emissions are down over one third in the last 10 years, and buyers have more low-carbon choices than ever before. See some show highlights in the video below, or read the full event wrap-up at Green Car Guide. ClipperCreek is providing more power from its EV charging stations without increasing price.
