This Saab enthusiast owned Classic 900 has been a Britalia Motorworks shop car for the past 6 years. We're sad to see it go, but with recent automotive acquisitions, we're out of space! As with any car we sell, this Saab has been gone through front to back to ensure that all maintenance and systems are at 100%. It has a brand new OE quality Bosal exhaust from the catalytic converter back. We've just rebuilt the front end with all new ball joints and tie rod ends, using OE quality cast parts, not the cheap stamped steel ones. Driver's outer CV joint is new, again with an OE part, and all CV boots are new. We have just replaced the steering rack boots, replaced steering column bushings and topped all that off with a 4 wheel alignment. The engine has just received a tune up with quality Bosch ignition parts and NGK spark plugs. Oil and filter have just been changed, as well as air filter. The crankshaft vibration damper is new, as well as the A/C idler pulley, and all new quality Gates belts installed for alternator, power steering and A/C. The ABS accumulator was also just replaced. Runs out perfectly, transmission shifts great, turbo spools up like it should, uses zero oil between changes.

In the past year, the car has received a new starter, battery cables, plug wires, brake pads and transmission fluid and filter. Detecting a trend? We're obsessive about maintenance, and use quality parts. The Fuzion HRI tires are a few years old, and about 50% tread. With the exception of the cruise control, this is an "everything works" car. Power seats, mirrors, windows, heated rear window, every bulb in the dash, you name it. Even the original factory alarm and remote fob works. The A/C blows cold and the sight glass is clear. It's still charged with R12, but Saab was smart enough to use barrier hoses on the A/C system, so it doesn't seep refrigerant.

The car was painted and a new top installed by the last Saab enthusiast owner. The top is in great shape, the hydraulics work perfectly and the body is straight. The factory 3 piece hard top boot is in the original bag in the trunk, and is perfect. The paint job was a mid-grade job, and now we're seeing a couple of pencil eraser sized spots on the trunk lid where the clear coat is separating, and more extensive separation on the hood. There is a little rust bubbling around the passenger front wheel arch. We figure a drain hole must have gotten plugged at some point, as it's the only rust on the car. The floors are perfect. See the detail photos for the body flaws.

Like every other Classic 900 we've seen, the top of the dash has some cracks. We've used Leatherique through the years to keep the leather supple, but the drivers seat does have some seam separation and bolster wear. Again, see the photos. The car has an aftermarket Sony CD player we installed, playing through stock speakers.

With a driver's side airbag, ABS, A/C, fuel injection etc, this little Saab is the perfect example of a daily driver collectable car. It's modern enough and efficient enough to use every day, but if properly maintained will only appreciate in value. People make admiring comments about it all the time. We've put several thousand dollars worth of parts and labor into this car, and it's ready for the next owner to address the easy cosmetic issues, or simply drive as is and enjoy.

We'll happily answer any questions, and welcome a pre-purchase inspection by the mechanic of your choice. We have a recent Carfax print out we'd be happy to fax or email. We've included lots of pictures so you can see exactly what you're getting. A winning bid is a legal obligation to purchase, not an opportunity to inspect and then decide, so be sure before you bid. We've sold many cars on eBay, and have a 100% rating for a reason. Terms are a $500 deposit via Paypal within 24 hours of a winning bid, and full payment and receipt of vehicle within 7 days. Good luck!

NOTE: After listing, we see that Autocheck is giving  the car a low score as it is calculating 8 owners. If you look at the report you will see that 3 of the "owners" in Wilmington, NC have the same title number. We bought it out of NC, drove the car to Denver, CO which was home at the time, then brought it to VA when we moved. We count 4 owners. It's not really all that important given all the work on the car, but still, it's important that you have accurate information.

New owners of Saab don't get to use the name

Tue, Feb 2 2016

Saab won't be revived as a Chinese-backed electric car brand. Aerospace and defense company Saab AB has declined to let the new owners of the dormant automaker's old designs and factory use the name on new cars, Automotive News reports. It's a blow to fans of the Swedish brand, who hoped the name would be revived on new vehicles coming out of the same factory as models like the 99 Turbo. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, known as NEVS, bought major assets of the Saab operation in 2012 following former parent Spyker's decision to liquidate the company in December 2011. This not only included the Trollhattan assembly plant in Sweden, but the rights to the Saab 9-3 and the platform of its successor. NEVS built some new 9-3s using leftover parts and powered by the old 2.0-liter turbo engines, with the intent to raise money to produce new electric vehicles for Europe and China – and to use the Saab name. When General Motors bought all of Saab Automobile in 2000, it used the name under license from the Saab AB. That permission was then passed to Spyker in 2010 and later NEVS, albeit without the griffin logo. But when NEVS sought creditor protection in 2014, Saab AB revoked the naming rights. Following reorganization, NEVS in August announced a deal with Dongfeng Motor Corp. to develop a new lineup of electric vehicles, which was revealed in December to include five new models by 2018, some assembled in China by 2020 – the first of which being an EV version of the old 9-3. However, Saab AB told Automotive News that discussions have ended regarding the use of the Saab name on these vehicles. NEVS owner Kai Johan Jiang told a Swedish radio station the company will find a new name to market the cars under when they go on sale. It's similar to what happened to SAIC when it purchased vehicle technology from bankrupt British carmaker MG Rover. While it had the tooling to essentially make the Rover 75, the brand name at the time belonged to BMW and barred SAIC from using it, so the Roewe brand was created in China. It's unclear why talks broke down and also where NEVS will get a new name (there aren't nicer ways to spell Saab, and it was originally an acronym, anyway). Will Saab AB attach its name to another line of cars? Probably not. What it does mean, however, is that Saab fans have to cling tighter to their old cars now. Perhaps that's for the best. GM wins appeal, dismissal of $3B Saab-related Spyker suit

Sun, Oct 26 2014

It's been a long time since we last heard of the legal battles between Spyker CEO Victor Muller and General Motors, the automaker from which Muller's company purchased the embattled Saab brand back in 2010. To refresh your memories, after struggling through 2011 and entering into bankruptcy, Spyker attempted to save the Saab brand by selling it to a Chinese consortium. General Motors, though, blocked the sale because it did not want any of its intellectual property, of which Saab was in possession of from its days under the GM umbrella, in the hands of a potential rival automaker. Spyker then sued GM for intentionally blocking what it said was Saab's only chance of survival. The $3-billion suit was dismissed after a judge ruled in favor of GM, which apparently had granted a license to Saab to continue building cars using its technologies, but reserved the right to cancel that agreement if Saab again changed hands. Spyker appealed, and, according to Reuters, the appeals court upheld the previous ruling, again siding with GM. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the company that eventually purchased Saab out of bankruptcy, managed to restart production for a short period before itself falling into financial trouble. We have at least another month to wait before hearing how Saab's next chapter may read.

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Saab 900 4-Door Sedan

Sat, Jul 29 2023

Saab sold the original 900 in the United States from the 1979 through 1993 model years (followed by another few years of Opel Vectra-based 900s), and most of the 900s you'll find today are the higher-end models with 16-valve engines and/or turbochargers. Last year in this series, we saw a 900 Turbo and a 900 Turbo Convertible in Colorado car graveyards, and now it's time to take a look at a used-up Colorado 900 with the base 8-valve engine and few extras. The cheapest new 1987 Saab available here was the base three-door hatchback with 5-speed manual transmission, which had an MSRP of $14,395 (about $39,497 in 2023 dollars). If you wanted a new 900 with four doors that year, the price of admission started at $14,805 ($40,622 after inflation). That's the car we've got here. The engine is a 2.0-liter SOHC slant-four, the direct descendant of the engine originally developed in partnership with Triumph for use in the Saab 99 and Triumph Dolomite. The Triumph TR7 used members of this engine family as well. This engine was rated at 110 horsepower and 118 pound-feet. The naturally-aspirated 16-valve version in the '87 900S made 125 horses, while the 900 Turbo had 160 horsepower. The automatic transmission cost an extra $430 (about $1,180 now); most 900 buyers chose the five-on-the-floor manual. In fact, I have never documented a junked 1979-1993 Saab 900 with an automatic. This one came close to the 175,000-mile mark during its life. The paint is somewhat faded, but the interior looks good for a car this age. Its owner or owners took good care of it. The body has a few dents but no rust worth mentioning. If it had been a 900S or a 900 Turbo, it would have had a better chance of avoiding this fate. Saab's innovative technology for 1987 starts at around $15,000 and goes up to the $20,000,000 Viggen (the fighter plane, not the later hot-rod 9-3 that borrowed the Viggen name).
