For sale is a 1979 Porsche SC.  I am helping a friend sell this beautiful car and I do not know all of its history.

What I know about the car:  It has 45,XXX original miles.  It runs great and is a blast to drive.  A local PCA member who is familiar with this year did a thorough walk around inspection and test drove the car.

  1. Exterior:  Using a paint thickness meter it was determined that this appears to be original paint on all but the right front fender.  Also, after having the car for a few days I noticed the right front fender has some minor dents (ripples) in it along the top.  There is a small dent on the engine cover and another small dent on the trunk lid.  There are also 2 small dents on the roof near the front windshield.  All rubber seals are in good condition except for the left rear side window seal which shows signs of age deterioration.  There is no evidence that it is leaking.  The front rubber trim piece on the top of the front bumper is bubbling up.

  2. Interior:  Interior is beautiful.  No cracks in the dash or seats.  All gauges are clear and work.  Headliner is in good shape.  All lights interior and exterior work.  The car needs a new turn signal flasher relay.

  3. Tires:  Have some age on them with a great deal of tread left and little cracking on the sidewalls.

  4. Engine:  Starts easily.  Nice steady Idle.  Engine pulls smooth on acceleration.  It has the air box pop off valve and the chain tensioner upgrade.  Both of these are desirable upgrades to this year of 911.  No major leaks and it does not smoke.

  5. Transmission/Clutch:  Shifts smoothly.  Occasionally, it is a little tricky getting it into first gear.

  6. Brakes:  Brakes are good.  Car stops in a straight line when brakes are applied.

  7. Wheels:   These Fuchs are in great condition.

  8. Undercarriage:  Undetermined.  Has not been on a lift.

  9. PPI’s are welcome.

In summary, this will be a great driver for someone or you can take it to the next level with relatively little money.   I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it to any PCA event near or far.

Production Porsche 918 Spyder images leak out of Chinese patent office

Wed, 26 Dec 2012

A few images of what looks to be the production Porsche 918 Spyder are here to say hello, courtesy of a patent office in China. If these provide an accurate look at what the hybrid supercar will look like, there are a few differences between it and the latest examples of the pre-production prototypes our spy shooters have seen.
The jerry-rigged turn signals inside the headlight enclosures and on the front fenders on the prototype are replaced with more polished units inside the headlamps located underneath the main beams. Behind that, the door handles have been swapped from horizontal latches on the door to vertical openings located just behind the door shutline.
We've also seen a Martini-liveried version of the 918 Spyder that has extra carbon elements that don't appear on this car. It was at the Nürburgring with carbon lips on the front fenders and another carbon element that hung from the rear fenders and ran down to the rear diffuser. When we saw the car on our Deep Dive piece, the front lips were gone but that rear piece remained, and we can't tell from the brochure and options sheet that we've seen so far what it comes with. The wheels from the concept and the green brake calipers, minus the polycarbonate covers, should be the standard fitment while the ten-spoke magnesium wheels will be a 29,750-euro (about $39,000 US) option.

Auto journalist ordered to pay big money for blowing up Porsche 917 engine [UPDATE]

Tue, 22 Jan 2013

Racecars blow engines all the time, but a Porsche 917 isn't just a run-of-the-mill racecar. British automotive writer Mark Hales reportedly borrowed a 917 from 82-year-old former Formula One racer David Piper for a magazine article, and mechanical tragedy ensued. Nobody is arguing that the engine failed after being spun to 8,200 rpm. However, Hales was warned not to exceed 7,000 rpm, says owner Piper, and the affair landed in English courts with Piper seeking £50,000 - over $79,000 US - in reimbursement funds for an engine rebuild and loss of use of the car while it was being repaired. Judge Simon Brown ruled in favor of car owner Piper, putting Hales on the hook for £110,000 ($174,000) including legal fees - a whole lot of money in any language.
Hales says the Porsche suffered a mechanical fault while lapping that allowed it to slip out of gear and over-rev. Piper wasn't convinced, and sought to have the repair paid for by the guy who broke the racer, saying "If you bend it, you mend it." It's not like Hales is a novice driver, having seat time in both professional and amateur races over 30 years, notching about 150 wins, but even the best drivers sometimes miss a shift, and that's what Piper contended happened to his car.
According to reports, Hales has had to sell most of his valuables to pay his lawyers and is now facing bankruptcy with the ruling against him. Members of the Pistonheads website are trying to coordinate a collection to help him out, as well.

'Born of a Blue Sky' brings the Amelia Island Concours to you

Fri, 03 May 2013

The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance has more clout every year and is getting a reputation as Pebble Beach minus the madness. Held in March this year, it celebrated Ducati and the 50-year anniversaries of Lamborghini, the Corvette Sting Ray, Porsche 911 and the Ford GT40.
Justin Lapriore was there, and seemingly everywhere, getting footage of the various wares on display on the lawns and the sand and the runway. The resulting video, Born of a Blue Sky, is a 16-minute survey of some of the finer sights and plenty of engine sounds. Check it out below.
