HISTORY: I purchased this Cougar XR7 in 2003 from Cascade Classics owner John Benoit. Mr. Benoit is a long time participant with winning entries in the large annual "Cougar Prowl" gathering at the XXX Drive-In at Issaquah Washington. He advised this XR7 was especially desireable for full restoration as it was a solid rust free car with no crash damage, was fully optioned, and was owned by a local older couple. The car was transported to Alabama for my friend John Farr of Cullman AL to restore. Mr. Farr is now on his second Shelby Mustang after having won National awards with his first. Mr. Farr completed the mechanical restoration and body prep and oversaw the final completion of paint and body work in 2005. Mr. Farr is available to advise those with any questions as to the depth and detail of the mechanical restoration. The car was transported back to Seattle where I entered the Cougar Prowl Meet in 2006 and won the category. This was probably the most fun I've had with any of my collectible cars....but sadly was the last time I entered any of the Meets at the "XXX" with any of my cars. The Cougar was trailered to Seattle to have it appraised by one of the more experienced local certified collectible car appraisers. I have included the two page report done by Mr. Walter Blair in November 2007. About two years earlier Mr. Blair had done an appraisal of a restored '68 Cuda 340 "S" which was subsequently sold for almost the appraised amount. Mr. Blair rated this XR7 at a "Number 1" on the "Old Cars Price Guide" rating system. Mr. Blair appraised the value of this XR7 to be $27,500.
CONDITION: In 2008 the Cougar developed a fuel system problem which eventually a tank replacement. I did not do this repair until 2011 and the car sat in my barn waiting it turn. With some competent engine bay and under body detailing, this would truly be Barrett-Jackson" quality. I simply do not have the garage space or time to do detailing or continue to own this beautiful car. If desired, Mr. Benoit might be able to do this...since that is his business (see his website). The carburetor was cleaned and reassembled, as was a new sending unit installed when the fuel system repair was made. I have only run "alcohol free" gas in the car for the last couple of years. I was given a second 4bbl Motorcraft carb by an enthusiast at the local Issaquah NAPA store. The car starts easily and runs great now. With carbs, careful adjustments will make the car can indeed "run like new". Since restoration the front headlight have become sluggish in opening. It's been two cold and raining in Seattle to work on these. They do close easily. This is probably a result of the cold weather here.
RESTORATION: During restoration, the engine, transmission, and brakes were rebuilt by John Farr. He is by far (pun intended) the best mechanic I know and builds race engines for "gentlemen" racers on the retro- racing circuit. He, of course, races his own retro '68 Mustang with speeds up around 150 plus. The only rust was a small spot at the base of the rear window which was repaired with metal. DOT 5 brake fluid was used in the 4 piston Kelsey-Hayes disc brakes. All lights are working in the dash and in the overhead console. A new cover for the spare was obtained for the trunk. When the body work was done, all new rubber parts , felts, gaskets, labels, etc. were used. A new power steering unit was installed. A new speaker was installed for the rare AM/FM radio. I'm sure everything was done right....since it cost me a lot of money. I have most of the receipts for the work/parts used. My investment is near the asking price. The wheels were changed as they just seem to "make the car". There is much more that is new....it's easier to say what isn't. I just can't think of anything that wasn't replaced.
DRIVING: Except for the winter weather, this car would be a blast to drive across country. It tracks straight and true. If you wish, I can continue to store the car in my barn with a cover over it and a tarp underneath. The car may be inspected and driven at the address below. Please call and give me a heads up to arrange an inspection. I store collectible cars for the public in my big barn. Right now there is everything from a '37 Packard, '37 Dodge Coupe, to a '48 Hornet, all restored to show quality. In the Spring, you can come up and drive back across country. The A/C was converted to R134A and still brows cold.
DELIVERY: I have auto trailers and can transport the XR7 in the appropriate trailer for a reasonable fee. Please click on my "other items by seller" which includes these my trailers. I can transport the Coug about the end of March. You are very welcome to provide your own transport or pick it up locally. Please contact me for delivery schedule and charges: (256)620-5756.
PAYMENT: Full payment must be made within 5 days of auction end unless other arrangement is made. Full refund is given if there is substantial misrepresentation.
I know you will be happy with the car....it will only appreciate over time and you'll have a blast owning her.

Ford recalls 600,000 older-model sedans for braking issue
Fri, Dec 20 2019Ford is recalling 600,166 older-model Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles over an issue that could affect braking and increase the risk of a crash. The safety recall covers certain Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ sedans from the 2006 through 2010 model years that were built at Ford’s Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico between Feb. 22, 2006, and July 15, 2009. Ford says a valve that is normally closed inside the hydraulic control unit may get stuck in the open position or be slow to close, which could make it harder to engage the brakes and increase risk of a crash. Ford says itÂ’s aware of 15 reports of accidents and two injuries possibly related to the issue. Dealers will inspect the hydraulic control unit for signs of the problem and replace it, if necessary. The dealers will pressure-flush the system with brake fluid and replace the reservoir cap with a new one. Ford is also issuing a small recall of 33 of its 2020 F-150 trucks in the U.S. and 51 in Canada over potentially damaged spare tires. It says the bead area on the tires may have been damaged when it was mounted onto the wheel assembly, leaving it vulnerable to corrosion, separation of the bead wire and ultimately a rapid loss of air pressure and detachment from the wheel. Dealers will replace the spare tire. Affected vehicles were built at the Dearborn Truck Plant from Nov. 10-21 of this year.
Junkyard Gem: 1995 Mercury Tracer Trio
Sat, Feb 5 2022With the rise of Radwood, cars with exaggerated characteristics associated with the 1980s and 1990s are cool again. That means some combination of pastel and/or neon colors, squiggly squeezed-from-toothpaste-tube graphics, nonfunctional decklid spoilers, giant TURBO badging, and kicky youth-centric nomenclature are required if you want your wheels to be considered in compliance with the sacred tenets of Radism. I do my best to find rad machinery while crawling around in car graveyards, and since I came of driving age in 1982 I know a bit about the subject. Today's rare Junkyard Gem shows us the Mercury Division's belated attempt to sell fun cars to rad-leaning youngsters: a Tracer Trio, found in a Denver yard a few weeks back. The Trio package added 310 bucks to the cost of the $11,280 base Tracer sedan (that's about $575 on a $20,925 car in 2022 dollars), and it got the hip-and-trendy young buyer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-spoke wheels, a decklid spoiler and these rad fender badges. I'm going to say that the much louder graphics and candy-cane-colored displacement badges on the Pontiac Sunbird W25 out-radded the Tracer Trio by a mile, but then Pontiac generally out-radded everyone in those days. Even Plymouth got into the act with such radness as the Breeze Expresso and Sundance Duster (we'll overlook the anti-rad Horizon Miser here). Perhaps tellingly, Mercury, Pontiac and Plymouth all got the "Old Yeller" treatment not long after the Rad Era ended. The Tracer name always went on Mercuries built on Mazda platforms, starting with the Australia-built, Ford Laser-based 1987-1989 cars and then continuing with Mexico-assembled, Ford Escort-based 1991-1996 cars. That generation of Escort/Tracer was mechanical twins with the Mazda Protege, itself the bridge between the 323 and the Mazda3. Some Tracers got the a 1.8-liter Mazda engine that was related to the Miata's engine, but this one has the pure-Detroit CVH 1.9. You're looking at 88 horsepower right here; the Mazda 1.8 offered 127 horses. At least the original buyer of this car got the base five-speed manual transmission instead of forking over $815 extra (about $1,510 today) for the four-speed slushbox. As a 29-year-old slacker living in San Francisco's Mission District and driving a hooptie '65 Chevy Impala sedan at the time, I would have taken the manual transmission without the Trio package, had I been forced to buy a new Tracer.
Junkyard Gem: 1996 Nissan Quest XE with 338,549 miles
Sun, Jul 9 2023When I hit the junkyard, I always look for vehicles with impressive final figures showing on their odometers. I find so many Hondas and Toyotas with better than 300,000 miles that I don't consider them especially noteworthy (the exception being super-low-spec cheap models, such as a Tercel or Civic VX), and it goes without saying that the bar is quite high for Mercedes-Benzes as well. It has been surprisingly difficult to find discarded Nissans that made it past the 300k mark; today's Junkyard Gem is just the fourth I've documented. The highest-mile junked Nissan I'd found prior to today's minivan is a 1994 Maxima with 364,238 miles, followed by a 1987 Maxima with 341,176 miles and a 1986 200SX with 309,222 miles. Keep in mind that Nissan didn't go to six-digit odometers on most of its US-market cars until the early 1980s, and then went to tough-to-read-in-the-junkyard electronic odometers in the early 2000s; this means the pool of potential high-mile Nissans is limited to about the 1983-2000 range of model years. Ford has just as much right to claim credit to this van's impressive mile total as does Nissan, since the Quest was a collaboration between Ford and Nissan that also produced the Mercury Villager; this van was built by Ford at the Ohio Assembly plant. The Quest/Villager platform was derived from the Maxima's, and the engine is pure Nissan: a 3.0-liter VG30 V6 rated at 151 horsepower. The only transmission available in the first-generation (1993-1999) Quest/Villager was a four-speed automatic. This one appears to have been sold new at Landrum Nissan in Pueblo. The rear glass has been painted flat black, possibly to keep prying eyes from seeing valuable cargo. The rear seats are long gone, so this van probably hauled cargo for much of its long life. The front interior seems to be in good shape. Why is this van here? There's body damage on the left rear and right front, suggesting a crash that may have bent the suspension past the worth-fixing threshold. Perhaps the crinkled metal just made this van too unsightly, or maybe some powertrain problem was the culprit. This content is hosted by a third party.
