Karma's new China plant will revive Fisker Atlantic

Karma Automotive, the successor to high-end extended-range plug-in vehicle maker Fisker Automotive, is planning a factory in China that will make as many as 50,000 vehicles a year. The company is owned by China-based Wanxiang Group and has also reached agreements for 10 North American dealerships. Most impressively, there appear to be plans to revive the two-door "Atlantic" model that was planned by Fisker but never saw the light of day. Wanxiang Group will invest $375 million to build the factory in Hangzhou, Bloomberg News reports. No completion date has been set by Wanxiang, which Bloomberg said last year was China's biggest corporate investor in US real estate. Wanxiang acquired the former Fisker out of bankruptcy in 2014 for about $149 million, and renamed the company Karma. The four-door vehicle model that was previously known as the Karma will be relaunched as the Revero later this year. Karma Automotive also has a 550,000-square-foot factory in Moreno Valley, California, near Los Angeles. The wrinkle to the new factory, though, is that most of the cars produced there will be the two-door Atlantic. That model was unveiled in 2012, but Fisker never made good on its plans to start selling it to the public, and went bankrupt the following year. Karma said Monday that it reached agreements to relaunch its automobile line with 10 dealerships throughout North America, where it will sell the four-door Revero. The North American markets will be Atlanta, Chicago, Ft. Worth, Miami, Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Detroit, Montreal, and Toronto. Karma is also planning to build an Orange County Brand Experience Center in Southern California, but it didn't reveal further details about that facility. Police ice cream truck to patrol Boston's mean streets

The Boston Police Department unveiled a new patrol vehicle that will help officers both fight crime and the summer heat–an ice cream truck. According to WHDH, the new $89,000 truck, which is a refitted Ford Transit, is part of a community policing initiative called Operation Hoodsie Cup. Started in 2010, the program has distributed around 120,000 free Hoodsie Cups, an iconic New England ice cream treat made by the Hood company since 1947, to citizens throughout the city. "If you had told me 30 years ago that the Boston Police Department would have an ice cream truck as part of its patrol force and my officers would be handing out Hoodsie Cups...I would've said you were crazy," PBD Commissioner William Evans told WHDH. "But, I absolutely love the new truck and everything this program represents. The goodwill it generates between my officers and our city's young people is undeniable and nothing short of remarkable. My only regret is that I wish we had started doing this 30 years ago." Operation Hoodsie Cup is part of a growing trend of community based policing among the nation's police forces. They're not even the first to use ice cream. Police in Halifax, VA, recently began pulling people over for violating code 1.7.3.9, which makes it illegal to drive without an ice cream cone on a hot day. Introduced in 1994 as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, community based policing is promoted by the Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). Community based policing relies on more personal relationship between police and citizens to reduce crime and increase safety, and emphasizes proactive policing such as foot patrols, citizen involvement, increased officer accountability, and a decentralizing of police authority. Karma Revero will be unveiled, with pricing, this summer

The Karma Revero, the high-end extended-range plug-in vehicle that will be the successor to the Fisker Karma, will have a prototype unveiled and will announce its pricing this summer, the Los Angeles Times says. Karma may produce as many as 3,000 vehicles a year out of its Southern California factory. The automaker, now owned by China-based Wanxiang Group, also may pursue the direct-to-consumer distribution model used by electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors, the Times says, citing Karma chief marketing officer Jim Taylor. The former Fisker Automotive's assets were acquired out of bankruptcy by Wanxiang Group in 2014 after Fisker, with its vehicles' 33-mile all-electric range, stopped making cars in 2012 and went under. The four-door Karma Revero, which is said to deliver more than 400 horsepower, will look similar to the Fisker Karma and will also likely be priced at more than $100,000. Karma is making the vehicles out of a 550,000-square-foot factory in Moreno Valley, California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The production line at the Valmet factory in Finland where the first batch of Karmas was made was broken down into parts and shipped to California for the new plant, while about 120 finished Karmas that were never sold were eventually used for test vehicles. Karma officially changed its name from Fisker last year. Fisker, which at one time was going to build a second model called the Atlantic, was founded in 2007 by famed designer Henrik Fisker, who now helps run a coach-building company. Karma Automotive is also planning to build sales and engineering offices in Troy, Michigan, near Detroit, as the company is receiving some funding from the state of Michigan. Recent hires include former Ford GT engineer Kip Ewing, newly appointed President & Chief Operations Officer Dennis Dougherty, and other employees who "bring with them expertise in many technical areas and deep experience with many great companies such as Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Tesla, Ford, FCA, and GM," according to Post. Karma will build engineering, sales offices near Detroit

Karma Automotive, the successor to the Fisker brand of high-end extended-range plug-in vehicles, appears to be looking to plan its rebirth in the heart (or the lion's den, some would say) of the US vehicle industry. The company, which was acquired out of bankruptcy by China-based Wanxiang in 2014, is planning to build its engineering and sales offices in Troy, Michigan, Automotive News says, citing the Michigan Economic Development Corp. The $3.6-million development will house as many as 150 workers. Karma officially changed its name from Fisker last year, as the Fisker moniker is affiliated with the coach-building company run by Henrik Fisker. The automaker is slated to unveil its new vehicle, called the Revero, by the end of the year. That car is expected to be somewhat similar to the original Karma, including its sleek design, the use of a 2.0-liter engine, and 33-mile all-electric range. No price for the new model, which is expected to remain firmly in the luxury sector, has been disclosed. Karma will receive $450,000 from the Michigan Business Development Program in order to help build the facilities in Troy. Karma also has a 556,000-square-foot vehicle-assembly plant in Moreno Valley, CA, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles. The former Fisker Automotive, which had been based in Orange County, CA, was founded in 2007. The company had plans to make a second model called the Atlantic, and once estimated that it could make 100,000 vehicles a year. FisKer Automotive produced its $100,000-plus vehicles until 2012 before going bankrupt. Wanxiang acquired Fisker for $149.2 million, beating out Hong Kong-based Hybrid Tech Holdings in an extensive bidding war. VLF finally delivers first V8-powered, Karma-based Destino

The Destino idea has been bouncing around in Bob Lutz's head for a while, but in January things got serious when Lutz, Karma designer Henrik Fisker, and entrepreneur Gilbert Villarreal got together to form VLF. A few months later, Lutz says the first Destino is on its way to a customer, The Detroit News reports. As a reminder, the Fisker Karma ended up in foreign-ownership purgatory after the Fisker Automotive outfit hit financial troubles in 2013. That was around the same time we first heard rumblings about the Destino. As the Destino has evolved (and the company that builds it has changed names and relaunched itself), some things remain the same. There's still a GM LS9 supercharged V8 in it, best known as the engine at the heart of the C6 ZR1, driving the rear wheels. The Destino starts at $229,000, and it's on sale, well, now. BMW's EV tech is being used to resurrect the Karma

Saying that luxury electric-vehicle manufacturer Fisker was beleaguered before its demise a few years back would be a gross understatement. But despite the cars self-immolating and Tesla CEO Elon Musk criticizing everything but the Karma's design, a Chinese auto parts manufacturer is resurrecting the brand under a different name: "Revero." That's according to a report from Wall Street Journal. Wanxiang Group is moving production to EV-hotbed California from Finland and will unveil its new ride either in July or August, but pricing hasn't been announced yet. The previous Karma sold for $100,000. Perhaps most interesting, though, is how it's going to address the reliability issues that plagued the company's predecessor. WSJ says that the automaker is licensing BMW's electric vehicle control and charging systems – a deal finalized last year. "There are huge, serious, major upgrades throughout the electronics systems, wiring, charging, battery," Karma's chief marketing officer Jim Taylor says. In terms of looks, though, it doesn't sound like you should expect anything to change in that department because the overhauls aren't going to be visible, according to Taylor. Wanxiang picked up Fisker's remains for $149 million a few years back. This deal is important, especially for BMW: If the German automaker's licensed tech can help Fisker outrun its smoky, checkered past, that's a high-profile win for everyone involved. US Senate authorizes DOE green car loan program [UPDATE]

Tesla Motors' crush of Model 3 reservations is fresh in everyone's minds, while Fisker Automotive (or at least its bankruptcy) is a distant memory. That's one explanation for a US Senate with a Republican leadership at one time bashed the Department of Energy's loan program for green-vehicle makers but now, under bipartisan support, the Senate has OK'd about $1.6 billion more to push forward green-vehicle technology, according to Hybrid Cars. The Senate voted to authorize a $1.6-billion federal program. The US Senate voted by about a seven-to-one margin to authorize a $1.6-billion federal program for the DOE's Vehicle Technologies Office program housed under the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). This is a different program from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing (ATVM) program, which was last funded in 2007. The feds have been green-lit to spend $339 million per year through 2020 to speed up the development of advanced-technology vehicles. The mission: to get the US new light-duty fleet to meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) mandate of a 54.5 miles per gallon average (which is a real-world average of around 40 mpg) by 2025. Four automakers received funding from the ATVM program in the first go-round. The list was: Tesla, Fisker, Ford and Nissan. Specifically, Tesla was loaned $465 million in 2010, and paid that loan back in 2013 – about nine years ahead of time, with interest. On the flip side, the Department of Energy was slated to loan extended-range plug-in vehicle maker Fisker $528 million, but Fisker only received $192 million before the spigot got shut off because of missed deadlines. Fisker collected enough cash to pay down some of the debt, but the government still was stuck with $168 million unpaid. And that got washed out in Fisker's 2013 bankruptcy. Nissan was awarded $1.4 billion and Ford got $5.9 billion. Senator Gary Peters (D-Michigan), one of the authors of the new bill, issued a press release about the new funding, which you can read here. The new ATVM program will also target automotive suppliers. UPDATE: This post has been updated. We inaccurately said that the ATVM had been re-authorized. In fact, the ATVM loan program "has $16 billion in remaining loan authority for automotive or component manufacturers for reequipping, expanding, or establishing manufacturing facilities in the U.S.

This is Henrik Fisker's idea of a yacht

He's done cars, he's done motorcycles, and now Henrik Fisker is branching out into boats. The Danish designer revealed the first fruit of his new collaboration with Italian shipyard Benetti at the Singapore Yacht Show last week. The Benetti Fisker 50 superyacht concept calls for a vessel measuring 164 feet, or roughly the length of 10 Karmas parked nose to tail. In that space, Fisker and Benetti envision fitting a spacious salon, a top-deck lounge, swimming pool, sunbathing decks, and "beach club" swim platform, plus six guest cabins, and quarters for 11 crew members. All that spread across three decks with floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The master suite alone boasts a library, fold-down balcony, fireplace, and a private staircase to the upper deck with a home theater that can be converted into a gym. The yacht is designed to be built using carbon fiber, reclaimed wood, and other exotic materials. Of course it would be up for the eventual commissioning owner to specify the vessel to his or her needs from the shipyard in Tuscany. That includes the powertrain combination, but true to the Fisker name, a hybrid propulsion system will be on offer. Solar panels are also part of the design. Given the high cost associated with commissioning a yacht this size, it may be a while before Benetti finds a buyer – much less actually gets it out on the open water. Fortunately the shipyard has other projects under way, as does Fisker: the designer recently revealed Vipers, Mustangs, and Aston Martins, all rebodied in his signature style – and even teamed up with Bob Lutz and company to relaunch the Karma as the VLF Destino, ditching the hybrid powertrain for a supercharged V8. New Fisker Karma will be pretty familiar

"It's all the same, only the names have changed," Jon Bon Jovi memorably sang, and it sure will apply to the next incarnation of the Fisker Karma. That's what the rumor mill says, anyway. A writer identified as JCMorrill on the Fisker forum Fisker Buzz says he (or she) has gotten some information by spending a "couple hours last week with the managers setting up the new factory." Anyone who liked the old Fisker Karma (perhaps not its creditors) will be pleased. That's because there doesn't seem to be a ton of changes in store for the extended-range plug-in hybrid, which is now known as Karma (China-based parent Wanxiang has ditched the "Fisker" badge, which remains attached to the coachbuilding company run by Henrik Fisker). The 2.0-liter powertrain will be the same, as will that 33-mile all-electric range and 240-mile total range. The company's not going to mess much with the sedan's sleek looks, either, according to the Tuesday post on Fisker Buzz. The brakes will actually be downgraded a tad, and the dash displays will be updated. There will be some driver-assist features added, including some braking and cruise-control features. Given that the new car will sport a price tag estimated to be $135,000, there better be. The Fisker Karma was last produced in 2012 before the company went bankrupt. Wanxiang acquired the company's assets in 2014. Rechristened Karma Automotive last year, the company has built a Southern California factory and could re-introduce the model as soon as some time later this year. Meanwhile, Mr. Fisker himself said earlier this year that he was teaming up with Bob Lutz and Gilbert Villarreal to re-imagine the Karma as a high-performance sedan powered by the 6.2-liter V8 Corvette ZR1 engine. The collaboration, called VLF Automotive, showed off the latest version of their alternative Karma at the Detroit Auto Show and said at the time that the car would retail for a cool $229,000.
