Fisker teases $40,000 mass-volume EV to be revealed on March 18
Tue, Mar 12 2019Fisker news hasn't washed across the transom in a while, but Danish designer Henrik Fisker has been making waves. In one week, his latest venture, Fisker Inc., will debut a new battery-electric vehicle that will cost "close to $40,000." Based on the teaser photo and Fisker's comments about the car, we're expecting a small crossover. To be built in the U.S. and expected to launch in 2021, this will be the company's volume model eventually aiming for several hundred thousand sales per year. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. It will compete somewhere around the BMW X3 ICE category and Tesla Model Y EV segment. The only thing we know about its looks beyond the A-pillar and side mirror is Fisker's desire "to make it really futuristic-looking." At the same time, "it has to be very versatile because we obviously want to get into a certain high volume with the vehicle." Everything's still in flux, and Fisker has learned not to promise hard dates, so we won't be surprised if dates and specs change even after the March 18 reveal. A year ago, when the Fisker EMotion debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show, we wrote that it's "set to launch by the end of 2019, with a starting price of $129,000. The company is currently taking reservations for $2,000 at its website." That's changed due to focus on the volume model. In an interview with CleanTechnica last September, Fisker said "we will go faster to the affordable, high-volume vehicle and the EMotion could come out either simultaneously or even after the high-volume vehicle." No doubt one timetable issue is the battery — Fisker wants a solid-state battery for the $40,000 car and the EMotion. In-house R&D has advanced to building small test units by hand. By the end of the year he wants batteries large enough to test in a car, and to have found a manufacturing partner to produce the batteries, followed by on-road testing throughout 2020. Fisker Inc has secured 15 patents so far for solid-state battery technology with 2.5 times the energy density of current lithium-ion batteries. The goal is 400 miles on a full charge and a full recharge in 10 minutes or less. We'll know more in a few days. Whatever waits under the covers will be judged against this standard: " We have to be so radical that we take the people who's maybe jumping ship from the big car makers.
There's a new Karma Revero called the Aliso, and it costs $145,000
Tue, Oct 23 2018There's a slightly more luxurious version of the Karma Revero now, called the Aliso. The name comes from a California beach, and the appearance of the car does a decent job of emulating the aesthetic of a beach as well. On the exterior, you get what Karma calls Laguna Pearl white paint made with layers of glass flakes to give it a shimmering appearance. Carbon fiber wheels are standard with orange brake calipers giving a bit of contrast to the otherwise beach-like colors elsewhere. The interior is beige, or sand-colored if you ask Karma. It's unique from other Reveros in its red burl wood treatment all around. You'll be able to find scripted "Aliso" badging in various spots on the car, but that's pretty much it as far as differences between this and a normal Revero. We can safely classify it as an appearance package, although the carbon fiber wheels are pretty cool. For the car and all the extra goodies you'll pay $145,000. That's $15,000 more than a base Revero with all the same performance metrics. As a reminder, the Revero is a plug-in hybrid vehicle (based off the original Fisker Karma) with a pair of electric motors and 2.0-liter gasoline engine. In total, the system outputs 400 horsepower and 900 pound-feet of torque, shoving it to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. So is having a unique Revero Aliso worth the extra cash on top of an already expensive vehicle? You may not even be able to choose, because Karma is making 15 Alisos with deliveries set to start in November and go into December. Meanwhile, since we mentioned Fisker: Something we're still waiting on is Fisker's solid-state battery tech it debuted at CES last year. Fisker says it'll be coming to EVs for 2020. Caterpillar seems confident of that too, as the construction equipment company just announced it's investing in Fisker, hoping it can one day take advantage of the electrification tech Fisker manages to develop. 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Long-term Review | Introducing something green
Wed, Aug 22 2018BIRMINGHAM, Mich. — I'm stoked to drive this minivan. Legitimately. The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid is an impressive evolution of the minivan and a smart execution of electric technology. Why hasn't someone made a hybrid minivan until now? I ponder this as I unplug the charger and take my first spin in the Pacifica, the newest addition to the Autoblog long-term fleet. Sinking into the leather seats, I'm immediately relaxed. That's why you buy a minivan: comfort and convenience. Hybrid tech? Well that makes this thing sustainable and even cool. Whether your friends are swanky or wonky, play the plug-in hybrid card and your people hauler is cooler than theirs. What we got We went with the Pacifica Hybrid Limited. It starts at $44,995 and wears a beautiful shade of Ocean Blue. The interior features black and alloy pieces and leather. Power comes from the sturdy 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 dubbed the eHybrid for this application, and it works with an eFlite electrically variable transmission home to two motors making 84 and 114 hp. The hybrid battery pack has 96 lithium-ion cells that generate 16 kWh of energy. The net system power is 260 horsepower. In real-world driving, it's quick, torquey and more fun to drive than the average minivan. It can charge in two hours using a Level 2 charger and offers 33 miles of range on pure electricity. Collectively, it puts out 84 MPGe, and using just the Pentastar it's still rated at a robust 32 mpg in combined city and highway driving conditions. The Limited is the top-of-the line Pacifica trim, offering heated and vented front seats, an 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen and 13 Alpine speakers as standard equipment. We added a safety and tech package ($995) that includes parking assist, a 360-degree surround view camera, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, seatback video screens and a Blu-ray DVD player. We also ticked the box for the hybrid appearance package ($395) to add 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, body color treatments for the mirrors and door handles, and a "Black Spear Applique" for the rear fascia. It's not worth your money. We topped it off with the $1,595 tri-pane sunroof, which is totally worth your money. Final cost including destination: $49,325. It's reasonable, considering the level of luxury the Limited offers, and as we all know, hybrid tech isn't cheap. If you can get the $7,500 federal tax credit the government offers on electrics, it's a great value.
Karma Revero refresh spied with carryover Fisker interior
Tue, Mar 13 2018The Karma Revero debuted last year, rising from the ashes of the Fisker Karma. Really, the Revero was little more than a Fisker with a fresh badge. As charming as the mustachioed face may be, it didn't do anything to set the car apart. A much-needed refresh is on the way, though how much it changes remains to be seen. Based on these spy photos, it doesn't look like much will change between the A and C-pillars. That goes for the interior, too. This might come as a bit of a disappointment, as the car has a slick interior design, but it sacrifices a lot in terms of ergonomics and space. On the outside, the Revero will get new front and rear fascias with new lighting and a longer hood. Don't expect too many changes to the powertrain. The GM-sourced turbo inline-four is paired with electric motors for a healthy 403 horsepower and 981 pound-feet of torque, though the sheer size and weight of the Revero means it's not particularly fast. Rumors suggest that the next Karma model, the Atlantic, will ditch the GM powertrain all together. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Fisker EMotion EV and flexible solid-state battery debut at CES
Tue, Jan 9 2018We've been following Henrik Fisker's new company closely, and have taken a keen interest not just in his Fisker EMotion luxury electric sedan, but also in the battery and charging technology the company's been developing. Now, at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show ( CES) in Las Vegas, we've gotten a full reveal of the upcoming vehicle, as well as new details about Fisker's solid-state battery technology, which has the potential for dramatic increases in electric driving range. Fisker teased the reveal of the EMotion in recent days, showing off the butterfly doors, and giving us a glimpse of the interior. Previously, we had learned of its fantastic, 400-plus-mile range and swift charging capabilities. A conversation we had with Henrik Fisker revealed more about the design, the battery and a secret charging method that he thought could change the EV game. Now, we have a lot more details about the car, though Fisker is still keeping some of his company's tricks under his hat. View 21 Photos The all-wheel-drive Fisker EMotion will have an estimated top speed of 161 miles per hour. It will be capable of Level 4 automated driving thanks to a suite of five Quanergy lidar sensors. The car will ride on 24-inch Pirelli low-rolling-resistance tires. The butterfly doors feature flush handles, and they open and close with the help of smartphone control. The car is about 197 inches long, with an overall height of about 52 inches, but Fisker says the packaging of the electric powertrain allows for a more spacious interior than most vehicles of this size. Let's talk more about that interior, as this is the first time we've gotten such a close look at it. It's very luxurious, combining the comfort of leather with the convenience of modern infotainment technology. Fisker says it will also offer a vegan interior option for the EMotion. The car has four individually adjustable electric seats, with a five-seat option with a rear bench. Fisker promised the car would provide entertainment when operating in autonomous mode, and that comes in the form of three driver-oriented screens, with a curved center screen, as well as an optional 27-inch rear curved screen for the Chauffeur Edition EMotion. The glass roof features four zones of tint, each electrically adjustable to let in your desired amount of light. The Fisker EMotion is set to launch by the end of 2019, with a starting price of $129,000. The company is currently taking reservations for $2,000 at its website.
Fisker unveils EMotion electric sedan's butterfly doors
Sat, Jan 6 2018Henrik Fisker runs a new company called Fisker Inc., founded after Fisker Automotive crumbled and the Karma electric sedan went to China to be resurrected as the Revero made by a company called Karma. Any new company needs a new product, and Fisker has it: the EMotion electric sedan, which will bring its 400-mile-plus range, four butterfly doors, and a tiny example of its "revolutionary" battery to next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We have about enough specs on the EMotion to fill a Post-It note, but we're told that the range comes courtesy of a whopping 143-kWh lithium-ion battery that can be re-juiced with a 125-mile range in nine minutes. Fisker Inc. had formed a joint venture with Nanotech to produce graphene batteries, but the JV fell apart. Fisker says the replacement li-ion batteries sourced from LG Chem employ proprietary module packaging to create "probably... the most energy dense battery pack in the world." The company won't be ready to divulge all of its battery and cooling secrets at CES, however, reps do plan to bring a cellphone-sized version to demonstrate the possibilities. Other innovations in development are an automated, hands-free charging connector. As for those doors, they take us back to the Savage Rivale Landyacht GTS, being butterfly portals all around, rear-hinged for the rear set. Not sure how practical they'll be, but they make the all-wheel drive EMotion look like nothing else - something the EMotion already didn't need to worry about. Fisker says the sedan's interior will be more spacious those of its competitors, with rear legroom exceeding that of "many full-size luxury sedans." Every seat gets viewing screens, and top speed rings in at 161 miles per hour. Fisker expects production to begin in 2019 somewhere in the US, and set the base price at $129,000. The order books are open now, with a $2,000 deposit securing your reservation. Related Video:
Fisker previews Orbit autonomous shuttle
Mon, Dec 4 2017Fisker Inc. isn't just working on an expensive performance EV. The manufacturer, headed by designer Henrik Fisker, is also working on a new " UltraCharger," and has filed patents for solid-state batteries. Now, the company has announced that it is partnering with China's Hakim Unique Group to build an autonomous shuttle for smart cities. Fisker says its Orbit self-driving electric shuttles will be ready by the end of 2018. Fisker hasn't provided a lot of specifics about the Orbit, but we do get a glimpse of it in the two images the company has released. The pod-like vehicle looks to be designed to maximize interior space. The side window has a display that shows the shuttle's next stop and departure time. There appears to be a door ahead of the rear wheels, but we can't really tell if it swings or slides open (we'd guess the latter). The partnership combines Fisker's automotive and design expertise with Hakim Unique Group's resources. Both partners have an interest in mobility and smart infrastructure. Fisker says the first Orbit autonomous shuttle will be deployed in a "Hakim Unique-implemented smart city." We hope to hear more details about this project soon. In the meantime, we can look forward to the public debut of the Fisker EMotion. The luxury EV, which boasts a range of 400-plus miles and a base price of $129,000, will be revealed next month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It also incorporates autonomous technology, but is more focused on a good driving experience. Fisker has filed patents for solid-state batteries
Mon, Nov 13 2017It seems that we're on the cusp of a solid-state battery revolution. The latest company to announce progress in developing the new type of battery is Fisker. It has filed patents for solid-state batteries and it expects the batteries to be produced on a mass scale around 2023. Though Fisker is a very small car company that is currently taking deposits for its upcoming EMotion electric sedan, there are reasons to believe that the company could fulfill this promise. One of the members of the battery-development team was a co-founder of Sakti3, a company that formed to develop new batteries and announced its research into solid-state technology back in 2011. That company was purchased by Dyson, the vacuum cleaner company, which also intends on producing electric cars that AutoExpress reports will feature solid-state batteries in 2020. Toyota is also expected to have solid-state batteries just ahead of Fisker around 2022. The reason all these companies are working on developing solid-state batteries is because they present a whole host of advantages over what you'll find in today's phones, computers and cars. The two big ones are greater energy density and rapid charging times. Fisker claims the batteries it's developing have an energy density 2.5 times that of current batteries, and they should be capable of providing a 500-mile driving range. The company also says the batteries could be recharged in as little as a minute. Both claims are similar to past claims from others, including Sakti3. Other benefits include lower estimated cost than conventional lithium-ion batteries as well as very little risk of fires or explosions. Fisker also announced that it will display the new battery technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. It will be on display along with a close-to-production EMotion, which will be using more conventional lithium-ion batteries from LG Chem. That car has its own impressive claims with a range of more than 400 miles and the ability to regain around 125 miles of range in about 9 minutes. It will also retail for around $130,000, and the company is taking $2,000 reservations now. Fisker intends for it to go into production in 2019. Karma Revero refresh spied in California
Wed, Sep 6 2017The Karma Revero, the reborn version of the short-lived Fisker Karma, has been on sale for a few months. Very little changed when the car went back on sale. While it may look the business, the platform itself is quickly becoming dated. Plug-in hybrids and luxury cars have moved forward leaps and bounds since the car originally went on sale back in 2012. As these spy shots show, Karma is well into development on the next-gen Revero. Don't expect the new car to stray too far from the Revero's basic formula. Look for a sleek four-door sedan with slightly oversized proportions. In fact, this looks like a heavy refresh rather than an all-new design. The basic cabin doesn't look all that much different than the current car. Hopefully Karma will figure out how to better package the interior. The current car compromised a lot in order to retain the concept car looks. The current Revero is a plug-in hybrid that uses a GM Ecotec turbocharged inline four. Two electric motors send 403 horsepower and 981 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. Look for a revised powertrain with improved range and charge time. Expect some sort of active safety features, too. The current model costs $130,000, but don't look for a drop in price. Small-volume cars like this are expensive to build.
