Ferrari design contest winner is sleek Manifesto concept [w/videos]

Ferrari asked students at a selection of top design schools around the world to submit their best ideas, and this is the one that a jury of people close to the company unanimously chose as the winner. It's called the Manifesto, and it was designed by six students at the ISD-Rubika in Valenciennes, France. The sleek design features a single line extending from the nose, rising between the arched fenders, over the greenhouse, and back to the tail. The rear wheels are spaced from the tapering greenhouse in a manner not unlike those on the Ford GT. There's a snorkel air scoop on the roof, thin strips for head- and taillights, and a split cockpit that opens with canopy-like clamshell doors. The striking shape is rendered in black with red highlights, and appears to be propelled by some manner of jet engine. The jury was made up of designers, engineers, collectors, and drivers – including Paolo Pininfarina, Sebastian Vettel, Nick Mason, and Jay Kay. Despite their varied backgrounds, Ferrari says their decision was unanimous in singling out the Manifesto as the clear-cut winner. They also made special mention of the FL, a futuristic cockpit layout designed by Roman Egorov – a Russian student at the Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany. The results from an online poll also awarded the popular Premio Speciale to the de Esfera designed by three students from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. The jury comprised Ferrari exponents in the broadest sense of the term from designers to engineers, drivers and even famous collectors: Nicola Boari, Franco Cimatti, Aldo Colonnetti, Rodolfo Gaffino Rossi, Jay Kay, Flavio Manzoni, Nick Mason, Andrea Militello, Paolo Pininfarina and Sebastian Vettel.

Christian Bale quits Enzo Ferrari biopic over weight gain

Christian Bale has an unusual but rational reason for dropping the role of Enzo Ferrari in the upcoming biopic of that same name, Variety reports. The actor, famous for his role in the Dark Knight trilogy and American Psycho, apparently felt that he couldn't gain the weight necessary to start filming this spring quickly enough without putting his health in danger. As we reported last year, Bale was to play Ferrari during a dark year for the company, when 11 people died during an accident involving one of the company's race cars during the 1957 Mille Miglia, a race in Italy held on public roads. The crash led to the cancelation of the Mille Miglia entirely. The script itself is based on a book written by famous automotive journalist Brock Yates, "Enzo Ferrari, The Man, The Cars, The Races." While the director, Michael Mann, now has to scramble to find a new lead actor, Robert de Niro is reportedly developing a movie in which he will play il Commendatore over a wider span of the man's life. Nonetheless, the idea of two Enzo biopics in the offing should make gearhead movie lovers doubly happy. Related Video:

Ferrari and FCA are officially separated

It's been a long time in the making, but it's officially happened: Ferrari is no longer part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Following the Italian automaker's initial public offering, it has officially split off from its former parent company. As part of the spin-off, FCA's stakeholders will each receive one common share in Ferrari for every ten they hold in Fiat Chrysler. Special voting shares will be distributed in the same proportions to certain shareholders as well. Those shares being distributed will account for 80 percent of the company's ownership. Another ten percent was floated as part of the company's IPO, while the remaining 10 percent is held by Enzo's son Piero Ferrari (pictured above at center), who serves as vice chairman of the company. The shares will continue to be traded under the ticker symbol RACE on the New York Stock Exchange, and will begin trading this week as well under the same symbol on the Mercato Telematico Azionario, part of the Borsa Italiana in Milan. Since the extended Agnelli family headed by chairman John Elkann (above, right) holds the largest stake in FCA, expect it to continue controlling the largest portion of Ferrari shares as well. Between them, nearly half of the shares in the supercar manufacturer – and we suspect a little more than half of the voting rights – will be controlled by the Agnelli and Ferrari families, who are expected to cooperate to ensure the remaining shareholders don't attempt a takeover of the company. Similar to its former parent company, which operates out of Turin and Detroit, the Ferrari NV holding company is nominally incorporated in the Netherlands, but the automaker will continue to base its operations in Maranello, Italy. That's where it's always been headquartered, on the outskirts of Modena. For the time being, Sergio Marchionne (above, left) remains both chairman of Ferrari and chief executive of FCA – a position to which he is not unaccustomed, having previously headed both Fiat and Chrysler before the two officially merged. Ferrari issues stop-sale order on 488 GTB for fire risk

The Basics: Ferrari North America has issued a stop-sale notice to its dealers regarding 2016 models of the new 488 GTB. The Problem: As with the earlier recall of the California T, the issue stems from low-pressure fuel line that may not connect properly to the feed pipe of the fuel pump. That could cause a fuel leak in the engine compartment, which could in turn start a fire. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The fix: Dealers will need to replace the fuel line assembly. If you own one: All the problematic units of the 488 are in dealer hands. According to the statement below from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "no un-remedied Ferrari 488 vehicles have been sold to the public." Ferrari S.p.A. informed Ferrari North America, Inc. (FNA) of the possible defect on the low pressure fuel line connection of the fuel pump provided by Ferrari's supplier Dytech – Dynamic Fluid Technologies S.p.A. on 11/17/15. Ferrari S.p.A. has informed FNA that during a routine pressure check for Assembly Line Testing on 11/04/15, they found a small air leak on the above described pipe connection. On 11/05/15 Ferrari S.p.A. extended their testing to evaluate vehicles that had been produced with the same batch of low pressure fuel lines. On 11/17/15 Ferrari S.p.A. concluded the investigatory testing and determined that the fuel vapor leak was a safety defect. With regard to the Ferrari 488 vehicles, on or about December 10, 2016 Ferrari determined that affected vehicles had left our control bound for various Ferrari dealers. We have notified our dealer network with a "Stop Sale" Notice informing them that this recall must be performed before the affected vehicles are sold to customers. It is important to note that no un-remedied Ferrari 488 vehicles have been sold to the public.

This Ferrari Superamerica Aerodinamico can be yours for $3 million

Introduced at the 1959 Turin Motor Show, the 400 Superamerica represented the finest and fastest grand tourer Ferrari had ever made. The Colombo-designed 3.0-liter V12 engine from the 250 GT was bored out to 4.0 liters, the drum brakes from the previous 410 Superamerica were replaced by disc brakes at all four corners, and the four-speed manual fitted with overdrive. The original convertible was followed by a svelte Aerodinamico coupe at the same show a year later, which was in turn succeeded by the longer version you see here. This was the first such long-wheelbase model Ferrari built, and was displayed at both the Earls Court Motor Show and Chicago Auto Show in 1962. It was one of only 18 made, of which 14 featured the highly desirable covered headlights. Chassis number 3931 SA was done up in silver with a black interior, has traded hands over the years between owners in the United States, Japan, and Europe. It is now consigned to RM Sotheby's for its upcoming sale in Paris on February 3, where the auction house expects it to as much as $3.6 million. The same auctioneers sold another such long-wheelbase Superamerica Aerodinamico for $2.86 million in Texas this past May, where it also sold a short-wheelbase convertible for a record $7.6 million. Sports Car Market also records that Gooding & Company sold an earlier short-wheelbase coupe for over $4 million in Scottsdale last January. The Problem: The affected convertibles have a low pressure fuel line that may not connect properly to the fuel pump feed pipe because of an improper coating on the fuel pipe. A bad connection can lead to a fuel leak in the engine bay, increasing the risk of a fire. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The Fix: Dealers will replace the low pressure fuel line assembly free of charge. Skip Barber's favorite car is a Ferrari 275 GTB

"My name is Skip Barber," says the voice at the end of this Petrolicious video, "and I'm fortunate to drive a variety of cars. My favorite car is a Ferrari 275 GTB." If you've ever heard that name before, you'll know it carries a lot of weight, and if you've ever seen a 275 GTB up close – or driven one – you know what he's talking about. Barber is a multiple Sports Car Club of America national champion and one of only a handful of American drivers to have competed in Formula One. But he's arguably better known as the founder of his namesake racing and driving schools, which operate at dozens of locations across the country. He's usually linked most prominently to the iconic Lime Rock race course. Barber rescued the Connecticut circuit when its previous owners pulled out, putting the investment together with some alumni from his school. These days Skip is the sole remaining proprietor, but as you can see from the way he talks about it, he's justifiably proud with what he's done with the place. It's one of the few automotive race tracks in the country recognized on the US National Register of Historic Places, and still hosts top-level racing – including the United SportsCar Championship that will return for the Northeast Grand Prix this summer. Between the racing career he's had, the schools he's started, and the track he's preserved, it's safe to say that Barber has left an indelible impact on the motor racing scene in America. And at 79 years old, he's showing no signs of slowing down. Related Video:

The 2017 Acura NSX will cost $156,000

Back in October, when our Editor-in-Chief Mike Austin drove the 2017 Acura NSX for the first time in the Bay Area and at Sonoma Raceway, we guessed that the hybrid supercar would start at around the $170,000 price point. We weren't that far off – it starts at $156,000, and tops out around $205,000. But now that we have a solid sense of what Acura thinks this car is worth, and we know what they benchmarked the NSX against, we can compare apples to apples. Let's be clear: we like this car. Austin described it as "makes you giggle" fast, everyday-comfortable, and chock full of impressive party tricks like seamless shifting – with only a few foibles, like numb steering, to spoil the illusion of perfection. Back to the benchmarked cars. Acura says the NSX will compete with the Audi R8, and was developed to compete with the now-superseded 458 Italia. Let's start with the 2017 R8 V10 Plus – pricing hasn't been released, and a direct Euro-to-USD conversion isn't the whole story, but it starts at the equivalent of $179,000 in Europe. For that, the R8 V10 Plus provides 610 horsepower, a seven-speed DCT, and a 3.2-second sprint to 60 mph. The 458's successor, the 488 GTB, should be more expensive than the $243,000 the old model started at, and provides 661 hp, a seven-speed dual-clutch, and a 0-60 time of around three seconds (official numbers haven't been released for acceleration). For less money than either of these cars, the NSX delivers ... less. Total system output is 573 hp. It has a slight edge in gear count, at nine speeds, and should beat the R8 to 60 mph. But there's no V10, let alone Ferrari's feral turbocharged V8. It'll be up to buyers to determine if the compromises involved are worth a few thousand dollars in savings, if no options are selected. It should also be noted that Acura describes this as its first "built-to-order" vehicle, but the limited external color options and interior schemes don't appear to be much different than the extent to which you can customize an Accord. The configurator goes live on February 25th, if you want to see for yourself. Lastly, in what now seems to be a necessary part of a new high-end car launch, Acura will auction off VIN 001, the first production NSX, at Barrett-Jackson in January. All proceeds from that auction will benefit two charities: the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground. Fangio's Ferrari sells for $28 million in New York [w/videos]

See this Ferrari? It just set the record as the most valuable automobile sold at auction this year. It's a 1956 Ferrari 290 MM driven by the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio, and it sold last weekend in New York for an astonishing $28.05 million. The speedster was built for Fangio to drive in the 1956 Mille Miglia – the last time the Argentinian would enter the race, which was shut down as a competitive event the following year. But before chassis number 0626 was retired, it was driven by such legends as Phil Hill, Alfonso de Portago, and Wolfgang von Trips. Ferrari only made four examples, and between its provenance and its pristine condition – it never crashed – this 290 managed to exceed its pre-sale estimate. In the process, 0626 powered its way into the record books as the most expensive car sold at auction in 2015, the most valuable that RM has ever handled, and the highest price ever paid for a vehicle in New York City. In fact the only cars ever sold at auction for more than this one were another Ferrari (the 250 GTO that Bonhams sold last year for $35 million) and another of Fangio's racers (the Mercedes W196 also sold by Bonhams for $29.6 million in 2013). Though Fangio's Ferrari was far and away the top lot of the day, it wasn't the only multi-million-dollar automobile sold as part of RM Sotheby's Driven by Disruption auction. A 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato set a new record for British automobiles at $14.3 million. A Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet sold for $5.7 million, a Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow went for $3.7 million, and another Ferrari 250 Europa sold for $3.3 million – as did Floyd Mayweather's Enzo. A '72 Lamborghini Miura SV fetched $2.4 million, and Janis Joplin's Porsche 356 set a new record for its type and well exceeded expectations at $1.7 million. Lego Ferrari F40 built a brick at a time on time-lapse video

The Ferrari F40 stands as an icon of its era and might be the greatest supercar of all time. The wedge-like shape and squared-off headlights scream high-performance of the late '80s, and the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 makes a magical sound behind the driver's ear. As much as we'd all love to park one in our garages, owning one of these Italian masterpieces is out of the budget for most of us because prices push $1 million or even more for an LM. Even if you can't afford the real thing, Hagerty presents a much less expensive option in a video that puts a version together using Lego pieces, one brick at a time. Starting from only two bricks, the Ferrari slowly comes together, and it's fascinating to watch the supercar take shape. First, the plastic version of the famous engine emerges, and then the red body gradually appears. The video lets you see hours of work at the kitchen table happen over just one minute. According to Lego's website, its F40 kit sells for $99.99 and includes 1,158 pieces. The finished product doesn't make the real thing's bombastic sound but is at least a more affordable gift for the holidays. Related Video:
