A revving Bugatti Chiron is our new favorite sound
Tue, May 3 2016The new Bugatti Chiron has an 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16 engine that produces about 1,500 horsepower. We desperately want to drive it, but as that doesn't look like it's going to happen for a while, the best thing we can do is just sit and listen to that powerplant. We've said it before, and we'll say it again, the Chiron sounds like an absolute monster. Of course, you've heard the Chiron already. Bugatti fired it up on the Geneva Motor Show stand, and more recently, it was caught being unloaded and driven into a dealership in – where else? – Monaco. What makes this video different is that rather than just angrily idling away, the lucky guy behind the wheel actually revs the huge engine a few times. It still doesn't compare to actually hearing the Chiron under load – get on that Bugatti – but this latest taste of the new hypercar showing off its singing voice will have to do. Related Video:
Watch a Bugatti Chiron arrive in style to Monaco dealership
Wed, Apr 13 2016Monaco is known as a playground for the world's ultra-wealthy, so there's no better place to draw the eye of the Bugatti Chiron's potential customers than at a dealer in the tiny city. This clip shows a shining black example of the new hypercar arriving at the showroom. While the 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 never gets much above an idle, the growl from the exhausts suggests great things at higher revs. The dark color stands out well on the showroom's white floor. The chrome trim around the doors and intakes also adds a little bit of bling, and the light blue brake calipers provide a nice flash of color. The same turquoise shade appears inside on the center console and seatbelts. It's hard to spot many other details inside because the seats and steering wheel have protective coverings. Even the driver wears white gloves to keep the interior immaculate. Bugatti plans to make just 500 examples of the Chiron for about $2.6 million each, so seeing one is a rare treat, especially this early. They are starting to pop up, though, like this blue one in Manhattan. If you want to hear the Chiron throw a few more revs, this clip from March offers another tease of the upgraded engine's sound.
Even the Bugatti Veyron is subject to recalls
Wed, Apr 13 2016The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration listed three recalls for the Bugatti Veyron today. Yes, even the super-rich have recalls on their cars. And being unable to afford a Veyron we can't help but feel a tiny amount of schadenfreude. One question not answered in these recalls: What's the loaner car when your Veyron is in the shop? The Basics: Bugatti will recall 72 examples of the 2006-2010 Veyron with manufacturing dates between October 3, 2006, and January 17, 2010, and the 2010-2011 Veyron Grand Sport from between September 29, 2009, to June 30, 2010. The Problem: The fuel gauge may show there's more gas in the tank than there actually is. The Fix: Dealers will replace the fuel tank control unit and upgrade the software. If you own one: Bugatti hasn't yet told NHTSA when the recall will begin. The Basics: Bugatti will recall 13 examples of the 2006-2008 Veyron with manufacturing dates between October 3, 2006, to December 22, 2006. The Problem: The positive battery cable and the connection to the alternator can corrode. This could cause the cable to overheat. Accidents/Injuries: None reported. The Fix: Dealers will replace the positive battery cable and alternator. If you own one: Bugatti hasn't yet told NHTSA when the recall will begin. The Basics: Bugatti will recall 87 examples of the 2006-2010 Veyron from March 10, 2006, to March 9, 2012, the 2010-2012 Veyron Grand Sport from September 29, 2009, to October 14, 2014, and the 2011-2013 Veyron Super Sport from February 18, 2011, to August 17, 2012. The Problem: The aluminum plates under the vehicle, which support it during lifting, can corrode and potentially detach from the supercar. If this happens while the Veyron is on the road, the plates could become a hazard to other drivers. The Fix: Dealers will rivet and seal the underbody plates. If you own one: Bugatti hasn't yet told NHTSA when the recall will begin. Bugatti Chiron spotted on the streets of New York
Thu, Mar 31 2016It's one thing seeing a multi-million-dollar exotic supercar sitting static on the stand at a car show. It's quite another seeing it out on the street in real life. And that's just what we have here in the form of the Bugatti Chiron. The two-tone blue-on-blue livery appears identical to the one we saw unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show a few weeks ago, and given how slowly they make 'em in Molsheim, chances are this is the very same one. The product of nearly two decades of development packs a massive 8.0-liter W16 engine, complete with two conventional turbochargers, another two electric ones, and the better part of 1,500 horsepower. With that much muscle, a $2.6-million price tag, and a production run limited to 500 examples worldwide, you're not likely to see many out in the wild, especially not standing still for long. So if you're wondering what this one is doing just sitting there by the curb, with the hood popped and a cover folded up on the roof, well ... a few telltale signs indicate that the photo was snapped on West 51st Street (parked in front of a fire hydrant), just across from the new Manhattan Motorcars dealership that incorporates the latest Bugatti showroom. What do you do with a fake Bugatti Veyron for $60k?
Tue, Mar 29 2016Replica cars are a challenging labor of love because builders spend countless hours recreating a vehicle that people immediately compare to the real thing. Perhaps, the person behind this Mercury Cougar-based Bugatti Veyron should look for another way to pass that time. The coupe is currently for sale on eBay Motors for $59,900. The builder deserves some credit because the fiberglass body looks acceptable in the photos from farther away. The car might even fool a few people from a distance. However, the devil is in the details, and the closer you look, the worse this gets. The side intakes are especially rough. The red interior is atrocious. It's essentially the Cougar's cabin but in an eye-searing shade accented with lots of fake carbon fiber. The seller's eBay Motors ad really tries to market the look, though. "You slide in to [sic] this extremely comfortable leather interior and you feel like your bank account just quadrupled in size," the listing says. Don't expect to win any top speed titles in this Veyron replica, either. Rather than a mid-mounted quad-turbo W16, a 3.0-liter V6 from a Mercury Sable sits at the front. Thanks to an upgraded intake and exhaust, the seller claims, "It doesn't sound like your grandmas [sic] Sable." We wish the seller the best of luck, but the asking price of nearly $60,000 is probably too optimistic. We would still think twice about buying it even after taking a zero off that figure, but at least this thing is fun to look at. Related Video:
1937 Bugatti 57SC sells for record $9.7 million at Amelia
Tue, Mar 15 2016See this car right here? It may very well be the most valuable Bugatti ever sold at auction. Any 57 would stand among the most sought-after Bugattis among collectors. But this particular 1937 Bugatti 57SC Sports Tourer features unique bodywork from British coachbuilder Vanden Plas. That may make it look more like a Jaguar or Morgan than a Bugatti, but that signature grille tells you otherwise. Chassis number 57541 was showcased at the London Motor Show and featured in some of the company's own literature, then went on to race before and after the War on our side of the Atlantic. In superlative condition, the Vanden Plas Bugatti was valued at $11-13 million heading into the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance where it was auctioned off by Bonhams this weekend. It didn't quite get there, but at $9,735,000, the auctioneer lauds this as "the most valuable Bugatti ever sold at auction and the most valuable car ever sold at Amelia Island." That may not actually be accurate, though. Sports Car Market logs a '31 Royale that Christie's apparently sold for slightly more at $9.8 million way back in 1987, and Gooding & Company sold a '61 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider for $17 million over the same weekend. One way or another, it's a lot of money, and a beautiful car that one very fortunate owner will be taking home with him (or her) from Florida this week. Check it out in the extensive image gallery above and the video clip below. Show full PR text BONHAMS' SECOND ANNUAL AMELIA ISLAND AUCTION A SMASHING SUCCESS – WORLD RECORDS MADE, SALES NEARLY DOUBLED OVER LAST YEAR, AND THE BUGATTI 57SC BECOMES THE MOST VALUABLE BUGATTI EVER SOLD AT AUCTION For immediate release – 11 March 2016 – Amelia Island, Florida – Held Thursday, March 10th at the spacious and conveniently accessible Fernandina Beach Golf Club, Bonhams' second annual Amelia Island auction was a resounding success with nearly $27.5-million achieved. With an impressively diverse and curated selection of 95 automobiles ranging from 19th century motor carriages to 21st century supercars, the handpicked assembly offered something for every taste and interest. Leading the sale was the singular 1937 Bugatti 57SC Sports Tourer by Vanden Plas. Armed with a generous amount of international buzz from the preceding weeks, this very special pre-war car had the auction tent packed to capacity with bidders and spectators. With a starting bid of $6-million, the bidding quickly rose to $8-million.
Bugatti Chiron colorizer previews popular color schemes
Tue, Mar 8 2016Bugatti's new Chiron made its long-awaited debut in a very traditional French Racing Blue. If you aren't a fan of such a shade, though, you'll be pleased to hear about the new colorizer for the hypercar. It's limited – the old Veyron's setup was far more versatile and entertaining – but with eight different color schemes to choose from, it at least gives us a preview of what will almost certainly be an exhaustive color palette. From what we can see here, there will be two sections of Chiron to colorize – the doors, hood, and front fenders can be one color; The roof, rear fenders, rear end, sills, and lower front bumper can be another. Both sections can be finished in exposed carbon fiber, with shades ranging from red, to blue, to black. Other details include the wheels and brake calipers, which vary based on the overall color scheme. Some cars have simple silver alloys, while others get painted inserts. Caliper colors are nearly as varied as the paint on the body. And while we don't have anything on interior color schemes, the cabins of the cars shown here change based on the color scheme – there's the usual tan, beige, black, and what looks like a dark brown. You can head on over and play with the Chiron colorizer yourself. We've also put together a gallery showing each color scheme from two of the three angles. Bugatti might make a sedan, but definitely won't do an SUV
Wed, Mar 2 2016Hot off the reveal of the 1,500-horsepower Chiron, one would think Bugatti president Wolfgang Durheimer would be sleeping well. Apparently, he has something else on his mind. "I can't get the idea for a four-door limousine out of my head," the Bugatti chief told Bloomberg at the Geneva Motor Show. "It's one of the options we might look into again as a possible next project." "Limousine" translates to sedan in German, the native country of Durheimer, and Bugatti has floated the idea of a four door before. The 16C Galibier was shown in 2009, and rumors of its production approval (or delay) percolated for years. If Bugatti were to proceed with a sedan, it would likely draw on the resources of parent Volkswagen Group, perhaps sourcing the underpinnings and other hardware. Meanwhile, the chances of Bugatti doing a sport utility vehicle are zero, Bloomberg reported. When asked, Durheimer responded with a precise "no." He did suggest Bugatti might use electrification for future cars, though he didn't elaborate. For now, Bugatti is basking in the attention generated by the Chiron, the much-anticipated successor to the Veyron. The Chiron bowed this week at the Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale this fall with a base price of $2.6 million. The Bugatti Chiron sounds like an absolute monster
Tue, Mar 1 2016Most of us will never drive, or own, a Bugatti Chiron. Actually, most of us will never even see one. The closest we'll probably get is stuff like this video. So with that in mind, we bring the first of what will probably be many, many videos. This one comes directly from the floor of the Geneva Motor Show and was obtained by the team at Auto Express after they slipped the Chiron's handlers a few euros (probably). The Bug idles, then raises its spoiler and gives an ever-so-brief bark from its quad-turbocharged W16 engine. It sounds good and menacing, but how does it sound next to its older brother, the Veyron? Well, not surprisingly the two cars sound a lot alike. They use broadly identical 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder engines with four turbochargers, but the new Chiron has nearly 300 horsepower more than the Veyron Super Sport shown in the video below. That makes us think that once we finally see the Chiron in motion, it'll be a much faster, but not necessarily much noisier, Veyron. Check out the Chiron giving a bark at the top of the page, and then scroll down to see Shmee150 get a close up with a Veyron Super Sport, for a unofficial comparison of the two noises.
