Volvo wants this car to be the Crown Vic of global police fleets

It has been years since the last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off the assembly line, but these body-on-frame sedans are still the most recognizable police cars in the US. Volvo is making a strong push in hopes that its XC70 can attain the same level of success as a global police car. As it is, Volvo is a popular choice for police cars in its home country of Sweden, but its cars are also used in police fleets in the UK, Belgium and Switzerland.
With an upgraded chassis, Volvo is looking to attract agencies from around the globe, including the rest of Europe, Asia and even the Americas. Changes over a stock 2014 XC70 include a beefier suspension setup, and the automaker has also tested the police-spec version of the jacked-up wagon in just about all conditions it could encounter in Europe - from the high speeds of the German autobahn to the low traction of Sweden's snowy, winter roads. We doubt we'll see many, if any, of these Volvos policing the streets of the US, but if we do, we're sure it will be in New England, Colorado or North Carolina.

The report cites fluctuating gasoline and diesel prices, and the relatively low prices of these alternative fuels, for their growing popularity. The report also breaks down the popularity of natural gas and propane vehicles in different parts up the world. In the Asia-Pacific region, China is the largest consumer. In Europe, CNG thrives in Italy, while LPG is most popular in Turkey and Poland. Meanwhile, CNG remains a tough sell in America, while South America has a healthy market. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are testing trucks connected to overhead electric wires to reduce emissions and improve air quality. The eHighway, as the project is called, will cost $13.5 million and will use battery electric and hybrid trucks to move cargo around the ports along a one-mile stretch of wires. Lyft is introducing its own carpooling feature to its car-hailing app. Yesterday, we reported that its competitor Uber is testing UberPool, and Lyft is now doing something similar to encourage people to share rides. Lyft Line offers discounted rides, and matches passengers who are going to nearby destinations around the same time. Lyft Line offers passengers a guaranteed price before they accept the ride. Volvo to use Oz as test bed for more Polestar models?

We've already told you about the slightly more awesome version of the Volvo S60 that our friends Down Under can now get their hands on. And according to Aussie site Drive.com.au, Volvo may look to the land of Oz for future testing of new, Polestar-tuned, high-performance models.
Volvo has reportedly confirmed that this S60 Polestar run will be an exercise in testing the acceptance of the Swedish tuner's presence as a proper competitor for things like BMW's M division or Mercedes-Benz's AMG. (A tall order, for sure.) "The world is watching this exercise with much interest," Volvo Cars Australia boss, Matt Braid, told Drive.com.au.
Hans Baath, Polestar Managing Director, reportedly hinted that the tuning house had already begun work on a hotter version of the V40 hatchback, but the project was scrapped in order to get the S60 program rolling. If there's success to be found here, this smaller hot hatch could be revisited, as well as a more powerful version of the XC60 crossover.
