This auction is for a 2005 Volvo S40 T5 AWD 4-door sedan finished in Ice White with the tan leather interior. It’s powered by a 218 horsepower 2.5 liter turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 20-valve 5 cylinder engine that has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, good economy and inherent smoothness. Code named B5254T3, this engine evolved from the power plant first used in Volvo’s 850 model, and which has gained a reputation for durability and longevity. It features an aluminum block and cylinder head for light weight and excellent heat dissipation, dual overhead cams with Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for maximum power output at all engine speeds, an integral exhaust driven Borg-Warner turbocharger to eliminate turbo lag along with an intercooler for a dense intake charge, Bosch ME 9.0 multi-port fuel injection for good gas mileage, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. This engine is a light pressure turbo, and as such, only requires regular gas. Most turbocharged cars from other makes require more expensive premium fuel.
If you are shopping around for an S40, be aware that the base model 2.4i comes with a less powerful 168 HP non-turbo engine which most drivers say feels sluggish compared to the turbo. The difference in price between a used 2005 2.4i and a T5 is small, but since you will be living with it for years, it makes more sense to buy the one that is the most enjoyable to drive. The engine is mated to an Aisin AW50/51 5-speed automatic transmission with Geartronic® Manual Shift Mode. This transaxle setup has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration when starting off, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and good fuel economy. The transmission is operated like a conventional automatic transmission for most driving situations but you can also change gears similar to a manual transmission during performance oriented driving maneuvers. To use this feature, you move the shift lever from D (DRIVE) position to the right into the M (MANUAL MODE). In the M position, you press the shift lever forward to upshift or rearward to downshift and the transmission will remain in the gear selected. This is most often used for spirited driving and improved control on winding roads, hilly terrain and during overtaking to keep the engine in its power band and for engine braking when descending steep grades. A display in the instrument cluster tells you what gear you are in from 1 to 5. When coming to a stop, the transmission will automatically shift to 1 (FIRST) gear. This transmission also has a W (WINTER MODE) for starting off on slippery snow and ice covered roads to help reduce wheel spin and enhance traction. Finishing off the S40’s powertrain is a Haldex® AWD (All Wheel Drive) system. This permanent full time 4x4 setup requires no driver input to engage. It’s fully automatic and always active. For most normal driving situations, engine torque is sent to the front wheels so fuel economy is maximized to that of a front wheel drive car. When driving on ice or snow covered surfaces, sensors detect wheel spin and torque is seamlessly and instantly increased to the rear wheels to maximize traction. Complementing the S40’s drivetrain are large brakes and a Dynamic Sport® suspension system made to smooth out the bumpiest streets and carve up twisting roads. Begin with a rigid chassis and unit body construction for a stiff foundation and add in a four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and coil springs in the rear as well as anti-roll bars all around. Add speed sensitive electro-hydraulic rack and pinion steering and low profile high performance tires for precise handling. For secure braking there are 4 wheel discs with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) that can sense panic stopping and automatically apply all available power brake boost instantly to potentially reduce stopping distances. At a rather light curb weight of around 3,200 pounds and with 218 HP on tap, the S40 T5 AWD accelerates from 0-60 mph in the sixes so it goes without saying that it is one of the most fun cars to drive in it’s class, and that it’s quicker, faster and handles better than many other pseudo-sports cars costing thousands more and has the added dimension of going through snow and ice covered roads that 2WD cars can only dream of. The S40 was redesigned for 2005 and is improved over the previous model in every respect. Both mechanically and stylistically the S40 has earned the reputation of becoming one of the best vehicles in its class. The S40’s new exterior style is very unique. From its sleek lines and sweeping curves incorporating elements from premium European sports cars, it looks handsome from any angle without being flashy. A quick walk around the car reveals how the all new S40 is one of the most stylish vehicles ever created in the compact sport sedan class of automobiles. It borrows styling cues from it’s larger siblings, the S60 and S80, while creating some that are all it’s own. Starting up front, it has both fenders set down just slightly from the hood for aerodynamic efficiency, along with a curved short front bumper housing an upper honeycomb grille with the traditional VOLVO emblem. Below that is a secondary air intake grille flanked on both sides with matching aerodynamic slats and round fog lights. Above the fogs there are clear lens projector beam headlights. Next, a steeply raked windshield and slab-side doors flow along the sides of the car with body colored door handles, body side moldings and body colored mirrors incorporating chic euro style secondary turn signal lights for a monochromatic look. Black rocker moldings add visual appeal and protection from scuffs. On the roof a low profile shark fin antenna adds another euro touch and the sunroof air deflector reduces wind buffeting. Then, going back, the cars’ lines meld into a steeply raked rear window and a short trunk surrounded by large taillights, while the bumper has a black lower valance to accentuate the twin polished chrome exhaust tips. The short nose and step-down fenders along with flat sides and a short trunk give the car a bold aggressive stance. The trunk lid has three Volvo High Mileage badges so you can be proud to show fellow motorists how well made your car is. It has the 100,000 mile badge, the 200,000 miles badge and a 300,000 mile badge that has a“25” decal over the first two digits to show 250,000 miles. Included are decals 26 through 29 so every time the car hits a new 10,000 mile milestone, you can add a new sticker to it. Make it a family event, shoot a video of your kid doing it. When the car hits 300,000 miles you can peel off the stickers to reveal the 300,000 badge in all its glory. Then you can have a celebration party. Scandinavian themed of course. Invite friends and neighbors. Serve Swedish meatballs, herring, smoked salmon, etc. Of course if you rather not let others know of the high mileage, I can remove the badges if you let me know before delivery. Then only you will know the car has over a quarter million miles on it and everyone else that sees it will think it has 50,000. The exterior is beautiful to look at, but if you like high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. The Swedish are known for contemporary style. Think Ikea®. Get in and sit down into a power 8-way sport bucket seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for height adjustment, recline and lumbar support. Check out how supportive the side bolsters are and how comfortable the cushions feel. Then adjust the tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel to achieve complete driving control. Notice how the cruise control and stereo switches are just a fingertip away. Now glance above you at the large glass moonroof that lets in light in all weather conditions and opens up on nice sunny days. Next, look ahead at the dashboard with the large easy to read tachometer and 160 mph speedometer, and if its nighttime, turn on the lights and notice how all the switches in the doors and the dash are illuminated. Look right and left at brushed aluminum accents and the beautiful high polished burlwood trim on the door panels as well as on the center console and how the “waterfall” design of the center dash flows down into the console. As one automotive journalist wrote, “The museum of modern art doesn’t have anything as stylish as the center stack on the new S40.” Not only is the styling chic, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the design of the leather wrapped steering wheel, the graining pattern on the door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car. Now turn on the engine and feel how smooth it idles. Next, take it for a spin. Notice how tight the suspension feels going around corners and how secure the brakes are coming to a stop. Now accelerate hard and enjoy the power as the turbo pins you back in your seat without any lag and how the torque is transferred to the pavement without any wheel slip. So whether on congested city streets, open highways, or snow covered mountain roads, you will be amazed how smooth, quick and confidently this S40 T5 AWD drives. This S40 is fully equipped with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including:

The interior is beautiful as well. It has very nice upholstery, carpet, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of age other than some of the color is worn off the left edge of the drivers seat from getting in and out of the car, and a few nicks on top of the dash near the front. The leather has been cleaned and treated with Lexol leather conditioner. It has a new headliner, which is a common and expensive issue on these models, a new set of factory carpeted floor mats and the center armrest has been recovered. The rear seat doesn’t appear to have been sat in very much either. The car doesn‘t have any smokers smell. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of. Mechanically it runs and drives great. The engine and transmission pulls strong and yet feels smooth both at idle, while accelerating and throughout the cruising range. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four ultra high performance Hankook Ventus V4 ES all-season tires size P205/55R16 with excellent tread all around. These tires have an ultra high performance tread design and a cutting-edge appearance with excellent handling, traction and control on dry and wet roads, as well as in snow, while providing a comfortable ride. With the highest “A” rating for traction and temperature and an excellent 420 treadwear rating, they should easily go 50,000 miles before replacement. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights. The car has been fully checked out and serviced with nearly $5,500 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Volvo or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include:
The above mentioned $5,500 of work does not include a transmission overhaul at 204,000 miles costing nearly $2,500. Photos of some of the parts replaced and service done:

With all the recent servicing the car has had, you should be good to go for another quarter million miles and get to add a few more badges to the trunk lid! 2005 is the first full year of the new redesigned bodystyle S40 and is the best value since it’s nearly identical to the later models, but being a few model years older, the majority of the depreciation has been absorbed by the previous owner, yet the car still looks and runs great. Since the ’05 S40 was the first full year of the new bodystyle, it’s one of the oldest, and thus, the least expensive S40s you can buy. What that means is you can own a car with the looks, style and prestige of a late model S40 for a fraction of the cost. Another thing to remember if you have been looking at cars in the 80-120,000 mile range is they wont have all the servicing this one has had. Items like timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, headliner, etc. that this car has had will be required on an 80,000 mile car sooner or later. While you may be able to find a lower mileage S40 AWD for a similar price as this car, if you have to spend $4,000 or $5,000 on it the first year you own it, it won’t be such a bargain. As for the mileage, remember, this is a Volvo. There are many of these cars with this engine still running great with 400,000 or even more than 500,000 miles on the road today. And don’t forget, the highest mileage car in the world is a Volvo, a P1800 owned by Irvin Gordon of Long Island NY and fast approaching the 3 million mile mark. The cost new of this S40 T5 AWD was $32,885. CLICK HERE to see the original pricing. But because it was a hot new model, most dealers were adding additional market adjustment markups (read rip off), so with tax, title and tags, you were lucky if you paid less than $36,000 out the door. This is a one owner southern car originally from Maryland which is probably why it’s so clean, and it has a clean Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report I ran after buying it. If you are serious about buying a second generation S40 in general, and an AWD model specifically, this is about as low as they go because of the higher mileage. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this car you won’t have to spend $1,200 on a timing belt and water pump service, you won’t have to spend $600 on a headliner, you won’t have to spend $500 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $500 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete rear brake service and you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service. With many of the other listings on Ebay, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. While most dealers just buy a car to flip in a week or two, I bought this car at a dealer auction more than two years ago to use as one of my personal drivers which is why I serviced it top to bottom. And I’m also passing on the savings in this Ebay auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. If you are looking for an S40 in good condition at a low price, then this car is hard to beat. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this car may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The car is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect car BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the car to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this car, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this car has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening. In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask. Buyer responsible for transportation and car must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy. FREE DELIVERY TERMS: Free delivery within 500 miles of the Washington DC area if bidder purchases vehicle with Buy It Now. (35 cents per mile for additional miles as shown in MapQuest.com from zip code 20001 to your address.) That is still the same rate as when I started on Ebay over 13 years ago even with more than double the gas prices. Remember, the Buy It Now option disappears once the reserve price is met. The Buy It Now price is $6,995. SPECIAL OFFER FOR QUICK SALE: DOUBLE THE FREE DELIVERY RANGE: Use Buy It Now before the halfway point in the auction, 10:00pm EASTERN TIME Wednesday December 5th and I will double the free delivery miles to 1,000 miles total. AUCTION ENDS: 10:00pm sharp, EASTERN TIME Monday December 9th unless Buy It Now is used. |

2016 Chevy Colorado grabs Motor Trend Truck of the Year award
Tue, Nov 17 2015It's not an easy feat to win Motor Trend Truck of the Year twice in a row, but the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado managed to do just that. Thanks to the introduction of the 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel, the magazine decided to bring the pickup back to defend the title. In more good news for the Bowtie brand, the 2016 Camaro earned the magazine's Car of the Year award. The Colorado beat a tough group of finalists to earn the nod this year, including its GMC Canyon sibling. The Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra also made this year's list. The Nissan Titan XD and latest Toyota Tacoma rounded out the challengers. A model had to shine in six criteria to earn the title: advancement in design, engineering excellence, safety, efficiency, value, and performance of intended function. Like it did with the Camaro, Motor Trend posted a story online that explained the rationale for picking the Colorado again. They praised the diesel profusely and lauded the whole platform as quite a capable hauler. This year's Motor Trend SUV of the Year honor went to the Volvo XC90. The Swedish 'ute had to win against an initial group of 16 candidates that the magazine eventually whittled down to finalists that consisted of the Honda Pilot, Lincoln MKX, the combined Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and GLE Coupe, and Nissan Murano. "Seven-passenger people movers aren't supposed to drive like this," senior features editor Jonny Lieberman said about the Volvo in the announcement of the champions. The Honda CR-V won last year. In the explanation online, the judges applauded the XC90's new modular platform, and they loved both the T6 twin-charged engine and T8 hybrid version. The SUV's key enamored the writers, too. Recharge Wrap-up: Formula E car swap video, Lyft adds carpooling, new Tesla book
Fri, Aug 8 2014Curious to see how the Formula E car swap goes down? During each hour-long race (or ePrix, as the series calls them), drivers have to make a pit stop to switch cars as the battery runs down. Of course, they want to do it as quickly as possible. It's kind of a tricky dance extricating oneself from the cockpit of one car and slipping into the seat of another facing the opposite direction. See the maneuver in the video below and read more at Jalopnik. A new report forecasts that the CNG and LPG vehicle market will be worth nearly $5.2 billion by 2019. The report cites fluctuating gasoline and diesel prices, and the relatively low prices of these alternative fuels, for their growing popularity. The report also breaks down the popularity of natural gas and propane vehicles in different parts up the world. In the Asia-Pacific region, China is the largest consumer. In Europe, CNG thrives in Italy, while LPG is most popular in Turkey and Poland. Meanwhile, CNG remains a tough sell in America, while South America has a healthy market. Learn more in the press release below or at Markets and Markets. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are testing trucks connected to overhead electric wires to reduce emissions and improve air quality. The eHighway, as the project is called, will cost $13.5 million and will use battery electric and hybrid trucks to move cargo around the ports along a one-mile stretch of wires. The trucks, made by Siemens and Volvo, also have the ability to disconnect from the wires and drive under their own power. See more in the video below or read more at ABC7. Lyft is introducing its own carpooling feature to its car-hailing app. Yesterday, we reported that its competitor Uber is testing UberPool, and Lyft is now doing something similar to encourage people to share rides. Lyft Line offers discounted rides, and matches passengers who are going to nearby destinations around the same time. Lyft Line offers passengers a guaranteed price before they accept the ride. Lyft is launching the carpooling service in San Francisco, and hopes to expand it from there. Read the in-depth article at The New York Times. A new book is available called Tesla Motors: How Elon Musk and Company Made Electric Cars Cool, and Sparked the Next Tech Revolution. Written by Charles Morris, senior editor of Charged, it chronicles the history of the famed electric automaker, its achievements in business and technology and the people responsible for Tesla's success.
What's the deal with comedians and their cars?
Mon, May 22 2017'Round about the time in his life when it should happen for all of us, Jerry Seinfeld's ship came in with a force that almost split the dock. He'd been doing pretty well with his observational style ("There's a cereal now that's just cookies. Have you seen this? Cookies for breakfast. It's called Cookie Crisp. Cookies for breakfast! They oughta just call it 'To Hell With Everything!'"). But he showed no signs of setting the world on fire until he got cast in a show that was either about – depending on the level of comedy geek you ask – the average New Yorker, the very worst people in the world, or nothing. Suddenly Jerry Seinfeld was pretty much the center of the comedy universe. And while his comedy was at once both brilliantly innovative and rooted in the mundane, his next move was a predictable grab at something exotic – he went out and bought his dream car. A rather nice 911, actually. As almost everyone knows, it didn't stop there, and the man put together one of the most enviable collections of iconic Porsches we're likely to see. So what's the connection, if there is one, between cars and comedy? As far as Jerry Seinfeld (the man) is concerned, he's probably not the same guy as the Jerry on Seinfeld (the show) although it's hard to say for sure; his public persona is almost unnervingly well managed. But cars and comedy were the constants in his life then, and, well, just look at what the guy does now; Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a cultural constant, and we're certainly seeing Seinfeld the man in that one, and cars are obviously still central to his life. And it's been that way with a lot of very, very good comedy guys. Cars seem to round out their lives, to become the yin to their comedy yang. Ernie Kovacs might not have invented visual gags or surreal humor, but he got them both to kill on television in the 1950s, so he's a comedy hero. He died behind the wheel of his beloved Corvair wagon, so he's absolutely some kind of car-guy hero as well. Bill Cosby, the hottest name in comedy for a good long while, had Ferraris, one of two fire-breathing supercharged big-block Cobras (pictured below), and a BMW 2002tii – none of which either contributed to or in any way make up for the profoundly sociopathic creature he turned out to be, but it's still a data point. The Smothers Brothers, who defied the networks and the norms by getting blatantly political before that sort of thing was cool, went sports car racing.
