Buying a used car, especially from a distance, can be a nerve wracking experience.  This car should take the worry out of your search.  I have a 100% positive buyer/seller rating with Ebay on over 100 transactions and that includes one previous vehicle sold.  I always try to be as precise as I can in describing the item for sale, include lots of photos, and, as of the time of this posting hope to have the fairest price on the block.  This car has a story.

I am the original owner and only drive 5000 miles a year, almost all of it around town.  This vehicle has never been farther than 400 miles from home and then only twice.  I have a full history of maintenance all done at my local Volvo dealer and all done according to schedule.  I would describe the car as being in good to excellent condition.  The only thing that is keeping it from being in mint condition is a four inch slightly larger than hairline crack on the rear bumper and a small crack in the rear taillight both happening in a parking lot when I was not in the car.  The car has never been in an accident.  The interior is in excellent condition although the drivers seat reflects the use it has gotten.  There are no rips, tears, or stains on the well maintained leather seats.  After recently detailing it for purposes of this sale, it looks great. To my knowledge there is nothing wrong with any part, mechanical or otherwise, with the car.  After I got the car detailed, which I do once a year, I honestly felt like I was driving a new car for a few moments.

Although the car has 30,000 miles on it, a low number for a car six years old, a brand new Volvo engine was installed by Volvo one year ago.  The engine still has a one-year warranty left on it and should be honored at any Volvo dealership.  Why a new engine?  I expected to put at least a 100,000 miles on this engine as did my wife on her 03 XC70 but last year on my way to the airport the car computer told me to stop the car and check the engine because it was overheating.  I did exactly that and, not being a mechanic, I didn't know what else to do other than check the coolant as I was on the Interstate halfway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque and 90 minutes away from boarding a plane to Canada.  I got back in the car and drove it cautiously to see if the heat gauge needle would stay in the middle where it belonged.  It did and I continued to drive it with the intention of stopping if I received another notice or, more importantly, saw the needle jump indicating an overheated engine.  Neither happened.  The needle stayed in the center the entire way to Albuquerque but twelve miles short of my destination the engine died from burning up.  Foolish?  Perhaps.  Nevertheless I had to install a brand new engine.  I was in Canada and at the mercy of my dealer where the car was towed.  I didn't realize I could get a used engine, nor did I count on my Volvo dealer burning me on the cost of a new engine and the labor.  The final bill came to about $14,000 due to a few other items that had failed like the engine harness ($1,400).  What happened?  The engine thermostat didn't tell the blades to open which controlled the air cooling of the engine.  Although I had an extended warranty on the car there was an exclusion for thermostats.  I pleaded with my dealer and corporate Volvo for some assistance as our extended family has purchased ten Volvos in the past decade.  A 25,000 mile Volvo engine just shouldn't fail.  Their engines are notorious for going way over 100,000 miles.  So my misfortune is your good fortune.  And since I never want to have to deal with my Volvo dealer again, I am selling the car.  The V50 was discontinued after the 2011 model but the 2006 is essentially the same car and the first to have the revolutionary control panel design.  I love this size of this car and now it's not available anymore.  If you don't want to drive a car the size of the XC 70 or lumber around in an SUV but want the utility of a Volvo wagon this is now your only option.  And you still have most of the great utility of an XC 70.  Finding one with 3,500 miles on the engine is probably next to impossible.  Factor in the double warranty, Volvo's unconditional warranty on the engine, and the 31 month or 30,000 mile extended warranty on the rest of the car including the engine provided by National Vehicle Protection (Contract #CCQ1010650) and you have an unusual opportunity.

What else can I tell you about this car.  Do you want something with speed, power, and handling?  This car is scary fast.  Five cylinders help but it's the turbo that does it.  You can pass a car on the highway in a blink of the eye which is comforting (no, don't blink) and it handles closer to a sports car than a station wagon, yet has all the utility of an AWD wagon with a special wide traction button. You can easily shuttle three 12 years olds and all their gear back and forth to school which is what I do all the time.  Make no mistake.  This is a luxury automobile approaching the appeal of a BMW or Mercedes.  And you'll realize that the first time you drive it.  It will feel like a new car to you minus that new car smell.  If you haven't already test driven one do your best to find a good used one in your area (even though that may mean I lose the sale).  Of course, if you're looking at my car you probably already know you want one.

I'm sure there's at least a few things I'm forgetting about in terms of describing this car so please feel free to ask questions.  I didn't photograph every tiny ding and blemish but as you can see from the photos nothing much is visible from 5-10 feet.  Please also note that some of the photos were taken before the car was detailed,  I'm happy to furnish paperwork if asked such as receipts for service, the new engine, and the extended warranty policy.

How did I arrive at my asking price?  It's not easy pricing a six-year old car (the styling stayed basically the same from 05 to 2011) with a new engine but I first got the Kelly Blue Book value for a 2006 with 3,500 miles inbetween excellent condition and good condition to arrive at a base price of $13,954.  I then added value for the new engine which cost me $14,000 because of the extras like a new engine harness and several other items.  I obviously can't pass anywhere near that amount onto the buyer but thought a third of that cost would be fair at $4,600.  But because that still sounded too high I just decided on $2,500 for the new engine plus $500 for the full, unconditional warranty.  I then added $1,100 for the extended warranty which is half over towards 60,000 miles and 58% over ending May 27th, 2006.  Next, I added $200 for the almost new tires.  Finally I subtracted $800 for the minor body damage (see photos) which gave me an asking price of $17,454. To tell the truth I don't know what a new engine is worth to a buyer. I'm thinking quite a bit because it's highly improbably you could find a used V50 with a new engine.  Rarity has it's value but the market will dictate what it's worth which is why I have chosen the Auction option along with a Buy It Now price.  When I compare my car to the other V50s currently listed I believe I have the best price. I'll find out soon enough.  If you lived in New Mexico pick up would be easy but I sold my Volkswagon eight years ago to a man from Oregon who hopped on a plane and drove it home.  The car is located in Santa Fe, one of the most unusual cities and popular tourist destinations in America.  There's no place like it and I'm happy to arrange the logistics of a short tourist visit for you if you so choose.  It ain't Sweden but it's not Dubuque either (no offense Dubuque, I have a good friend there and you have a nice town.  Just not a whole lot to do there).

For the record I purchased the car from Albuquerque Lincoln/Volvo for $36,799 on May 24, 2006.  You can see photos of the Extended Warranty Policy (fully transferrable), the receipt for the new engine, and the original car sticker description although some of it may be hard to read.  I'm happy to scan and email anything you want.
I think I've said enough.  Good luck on a great vehicle.
Richard

Recharge Wrap-up: video touts Volvo electric buses, Nissan and BMW build EV chargers in S. Africa

Wed, May 27 2015

Volvo is touting the advantages of electric buses in a new video. The short film, called Route 55, promotes the ElectriCity Project for public transport, and, more specifically, the new electric bus route in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new route debuts June 15 using Volvo electric and hybrid buses. In the video, two teenagers are seen waiting for the bus. As one boards, the other asks her out from the sidewalk, but she can't hear him over the noise of the diesel bus, which then closes its doors and drives away. The film asks, "What if this bus had been silent?" See the video above, and read more in the press release below. BMW and Nissan will build an EV charging network across South Africa. Through 2017, the two automakers will build fast-charging and AC stations around the country in order to encourage the adoption of EVs. Nissan has been selling the Leaf in South Africa since 2013, and BMW introduced the i3 and i8 in March. "In order for the introduction and expansion of electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to be successful in this market, we need to work together," says BMW South Africa Managing Director Tim Abbott. Read more at Automotive News Europe. The Renault-Nissan Alliance will provide the United Nations with 200 electric vehicles for the COP21 climate conference in Paris. The fleet of vehicles includes the Nissan Leaf and e-NV200, as well as the Renault ZOE, Kangoo ZE and Fluence ZE. The entire passenger car shuttle fleet will use all-electric vehicles as some 20,000 UN attendees descend upon Paris from November 30 to December 11. "Thanks to the Alliance's fleet of 100-percent electric vehicles, it will contribute to our goal of achieving a carbon neutral event," says French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development and COP21 President Laurent Fabius. "The technology of electric vehicles helps reduce greenhouse gases in the transportation sector efficiently." Read more from Renault. Visa will be the official title sponsor of the Formula E London ePrix. Officially called the "2015 FIA Formula E Visa London ePrix," the races on June 27 and 28 will be the last of the electric racing series's inaugural season. Visa Europe will award the Visa Fastest Lap trophy after the each round, and will have interactive activities at the race's eVillage.

Volvo to use Oz as test bed for more Polestar models?

Tue, 25 Jun 2013

We've already told you about the slightly more awesome version of the Volvo S60 that our friends Down Under can now get their hands on. And according to Aussie site Drive.com.au, Volvo may look to the land of Oz for future testing of new, Polestar-tuned, high-performance models.
Volvo has reportedly confirmed that this S60 Polestar run will be an exercise in testing the acceptance of the Swedish tuner's presence as a proper competitor for things like BMW's M division or Mercedes-Benz's AMG. (A tall order, for sure.) "The world is watching this exercise with much interest," Volvo Cars Australia boss, Matt Braid, told Drive.com.au.
Hans Baath, Polestar Managing Director, reportedly hinted that the tuning house had already begun work on a hotter version of the V40 hatchback, but the project was scrapped in order to get the S60 program rolling. If there's success to be found here, this smaller hot hatch could be revisited, as well as a more powerful version of the XC60 crossover.

2022 Volvo C40 Recharge priced, goes on sale late 2021

Mon, Jul 19 2021

Pricing for the 2022 Volvo C40 Recharge is out, and in consistent coupe crossover fashion, it’s a little more expensive than the traditionally-styled XC40 Recharge. The starting price is $59,845, including the $1,095 destination charge. ThatÂ’s $4,760 more than a base 2022 XC40 Recharge. ItÂ’ll be limited to just a single fully-loaded trim called “Ultimate” initially — there will be no additional options, Volvo says. Volvo lets you choose a lower “Plus” trim with the standard XC40 Recharge, but the cheaper starting price also carries less standard equipment. Sweetening the deal for C40 customers is an Electrify America partnership that starts all owners off with 250 kWh of complimentary charging. This comes with the regular XC40 Recharge, too, but it must be a 2022 model year vehicle. One should also take into account any federal or state tax incentives on offer when running the number — Volvo is still eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, so your effective net price could be closer to $50,000 depending on your location. Unfortunately, EPA-rated electric range on a full charge was not included in this announcement. Volvo announced the C40 with a 260-mile range estimate, but the real EPA number will surely fall below that figure. The XC40 Recharge, which the C40 shares all of its vital parts with, is EPA-rated for 208 miles on a full charge. Deliveries are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter this year for folks who pre-ordered the C40 online in March. Related video: This content is hosted by a third party.
