PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, read everything before bidding or emailing questions.  I put a lot of effort into listing as many details I could think of.  Chances are good that your question is answered somewhere in the following text...

This is a 7-Day NO RESERVE auction for a 1999 Volvo V70XC Cross Country AWD Turbo Wagon!  HIGH BIDDER WINS!
This Volvo Cross Country Wagon in outstanding visual condition; however, the vehicle will need some minor work to be perfect.  Please read everything for a complete and honest description.

I purchased this Volvo in 2007 with 54217 miles at the time (this is documented on the current Pennsylvania title).  I am the second owner and both I and the first owner maintained the car exceedingly well.  It has always been kept clean and serviced and positively never abused.  There are ZERO modifications to this car, in any way.  No changes to the radio; no holes drilled anywhere; no body or tire modifications; and absolutely no engine or drive train modifications.  With the exception of the front bumper, 100% of the paint you see is factory original.  Positively ZERO rust ANYWHERE.  Never any body damage.  Front bumper was repainted when the alternator went out and a ying-yang wrecker driver from AAA damaged it. That killed me.  Although there are minor imperfections to the paint -- and a number of pine-tree sap stains on the hood, the exterior appearance of car is nothing short of exceptional and speaks to the care the car has received.

Interior shows equally as well as the exterior.  Factory tan leather is well above average throughout and factor carpet and mats are excellent without any excessive ware or stains.  There is very minor cracking to the drivers front seat (see photo) and multiple scuff marks to the rear seat leather from where child seats were installed.  Absolutely no breaks or rips to the leather, anywhere.  Both front door panels are loose at the bottom and all four door panels are beginning to show signs of the vinyl inserts not being glued completely to the backing.

Wheels are the same ones that came on the car from Belgium; they have never been refinished.  Two wheels do show minor  corrosion around the beads; two are near mint.  None of the wheels have any hard scuffs, bends or nicks. Rear tires are BF Goodrich Traction T/A radials (this is the OEM name and model tire that came with the car from the factory) with 38,000 miles on them; front tires are BF Goodrich Advantage T/A radial with 11,000 miles. Only reason I do not have OEM matching tires is because the Traction T/A was discontinued and is no longer available for purchase.  Spare tire is a doughnut and to the best of my knowledge has never been removed from the rear well.  Factory tool kit is also in the well.

This car treated my family well for the last seven years.  It was only within the last 7,500 miles that there have been multiple maintenance ans service issues that all cropped up within a short time.  It was a tough decision, but I decided to not spend the money for the repairs.  The lucky buyer of this vehicle gets to fix all the things that the car needs and end up with an outstanding Cross Country that should easily go another 100,000 miles.

Here is the honest story of the good and the bad:
  • Car starts up the moment the starter engages.  It runs as smooth as any five-cylinder can with no smoke, knock or excessive valve-train chatter.  Idles perfectly at 800 RPMs and accelerates as it should.  Turbo operates flawlessly and kicks in when it should without any whine or grind. Car does not stall or rev.  Burns about 1 quart of oil in 4,000 miles.
  • Transmission shifts flawlessly; transfer case operates as it should.  Neither have any funny noises or operating problems.
  • Car tracks straight and handles like a Volvo XC should.  Front tires show no unusual ware.
  • Brakes and rotors are good with about 40,000 all the way around; master cylinder replaced 2012 and has about 10,000.
  • Radiator replaced 2013 and has 5,000 miles on it.
  • Battery replaced 6/2014 and car comes with fire brand new Bosch Platinum plugs that the new buyer gets to install.
The "issues"...
  • Air conditioning stopped working in May.  Compressor runs; I recharged the system but it did not hold.
  • My mechanic tells me that both ball joints and A-frame bushings will need to be replaced for the next inspection
  • There is a coolant leak, apparently associated with the water pump.  Only leaks a noticeably amount when there is a load on the engine (i.e., when you are driving) so exact location of the leak has eluded me while the car is parked and idling.  I need to top off coolant every 100 or so miles.
  • Check engine light comes on intermittently.  When I just cleaned the car and took these photos, it was off.  To be honest, it has been on more often that off in the last 2500 miles.
  • Catch that holds the the gas flap shut broke off.  Flap closes but is not tight.
  • Light that says the rear hatch is open is always on -- even when the hatch is tightly shut.
  • Although not major, the emergency brake cable housing has come loose and rubs against the side of the hollow portion of the drive shaft.  You will hear it clearly when you are driving the car.
  • Left-hand front power window switch is sticky; will work if you play with it but should be replaced
  • Left-hand front power seat does not go front-to-back.  Power back tilt does work
  • Neither motor for the headlight wipers work.  Left side is missing the blade
  • The cables that activate the hood release need to be lubricated.  When you pull the catch from the inside, you need a second person on the outside to lift the hood.  This makes it a real drag to open the hood while no one else is around.
  • Extremely slow leak in front right tire.  I put air in about every two weeks.
Overall a well-optioned Volvo.  Unless noted above, all other options and accessories work properly including windows, locks, cruise, CD, tape, AM/FM, heated seats, heated mirrors, sun roof, rear and side defog, power left and right mirrors and factory fog lights.  This XC does NOT have a third seat or built-in child booster seats.  Car is set up for keyless entry; there are two keys that come with the car but both of the fobs have stopped working and I do not have either with the car at this time.  Presume no keyless entry fobs come with the car.

Whereas I am extremely knowledgeable about this vehicle, its operations and maintenance history,  I do not have an organized binder of receipts and records as some Volvo-heads do.  I'm more a put-it-in-a-shoebox kind of record keeper.

My very reasonable terms of sale:

$200 deposit due within 48-hours from the end of the auction.  REALLY!! That means you need to be able to transfer $200 into my Paypal account within 2 days from the end of the auction.  If I don't get the $200 deposit, I'll presume you are not serious about the purchase, and I will relist this Volvo.  Fair??  Balance due in cash at the time the vehicle is picked up.  I would like the car gone and paid for by August 9;  -- I am not available 8/1 to assist with the transfer.  Buyer responsible for all fees associated with transfer of this car to the new owner.  If you are a Pennsylvania resident, please ensure you are prepared to transfer the vehicle to your name on the day of purchase. Unless you know someone personally, there are very few title and tag stores open on Sunday in Pennsylvania.   If you are an out-of-state purchaser, you will need to have a valid insurance card from another vehicle and get a temporary transfer tag that is good for 30 days.  This will cost you $75.00 for out-of-state drivers.  I will NOT ALLOW this vehicle to be driven away until it can be completed legally.  If you have ANY questions about this, please ask before you bid.

Your $200 deposit it NON REFUNDABLE!!!  I believe I have made all efforts to describe this car accurately and honestly.  It is a good car, and affordable.  It is not perfect and will need service and maintenance.  Read everything and understand what I am selling.  If this non refundable deposit issue does not sit well with you, than DON'T BID.  I won't mind at all.

Please email with ANY questions not already covered in the above saga.  Also please be aware that I have ABSOLUTE NO INTEREST IN ANY TRADES related to the transfer or sale of this car.  I'm not looking for any other cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, guns, or drugs.  [I write this because I've sold cars before on Ebay and someone ALWAYS whats to trade something for what I'm selling}.  Car needs to be paid for in CASH.  ABSOLUTELY no personal checks.  If you are interested in buying this vehicle, please ensure you HAVE ALL THE MONEY AVAILABLE before you bid or use buy-it-now.  I'm exceedingly easy to deal with, but one thing that really gets me annoyed is hearing eleventh-hour excuses that revolve around, "I'll have the rest of the money on the second Tuesday of next week after I get paid or win the lottery or get my settlement or sell my other car....etc".   You either have the money or you don't.  PERIOD!!  If necessary, ask your wife, husband, mother or father BEFORE YOU BID.

Sold as-is where-is.  No warranty expressed or implied.  Contact me in advance of the end of the auction and you may view and inspect the vehicle.  As the insurance has been dropped. effective 7/1, there will be no test drives further than up and down my street.

Car is located in Spring City, Pennsylvania 19475.  It is approximately 3 miles from the Royersford exit of Route 422 or 8 miles from the Exton exit of the Pennsylvania Turn Pike.  If you do not know exactly where this is, please Google it.

Please email with questions and thanks for reading everything.  No reserve auction; high bid wins!

Hot rod tractor stars in Swedish version of Farmkhana

Mon, 08 Sep 2014

The Nordic countries are known for their beautiful fjords, blonde-haired populace and bitter cold for a good portion of the year. The hours spent indoors during the dark, cold season apparently gives a lot of time for some crazy brainstorming. Tire store chain Vianor is highlighting the Traktor Terror in a new video. If Ken Block is the master of Gymkhana, then these guys know all about Farmkhana in their custom, turbocharged tractor.
According to the YouTube description from Vianor, the tractor is a 1956 Volvo BM Terrier with an added roll cage, adjustable front suspension and extended frame. The engine is thoroughly Swedish, and it's based on a Volvo 940 Turbo with a Volvo 240 head and Volvo 740 intercooler. However, it uses a Saab turbo Prospark ignition and fuel system. All told, the setup is claimed to make 225 horsepower and is capable of a top speed of 60 miles per hour.
That's not crazy power, but this tractor can certainly put it down. The farm machine has no problem smoking those big rear wheels and drifts easily.... although, it may be a tiny little bit unstable (hence the roll cage). If nothing else, this looks like the world's most fun way to be a farmer, that's for sure.

Embrace one-pedal driving in EVs and PHEVs

Wed, Mar 23 2022

I just came back from a trip out to California, where I was able to drive the new 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge in its new extended-range form (you’ll find that review on Autoblog tomorrow). One of the newly-added headline features for this plug-in hybrid SUV is true one-pedal driving. This is one-pedal driving in a PHEV, not a full battery electric vehicle, and as of now, one-pedal driving in PHEVs is exceedingly rare. Other plug-ins may offer levels of braking regeneration, but one-pedal driving is typically a feature reserved for full EVs. Adding the feature to the Volvo is a huge boost to the driving experience for me, and I sincerely hope we see it in even more PHEVs soon. In case youÂ’re new to the one-pedal driving game, hereÂ’s a quick explainer. ItÂ’s called “one-pedal” because most of the time, youÂ’re only using one pedal to accelerate and decelerate. Press in to accelerate; let off evenly and gently to decelerate via regenerative braking. The trick at the end is in slowing down the final few mph and bringing the car to a stop smoothly, which typically requires some practice and time spent figuring out how best to modulate the throttle pedal. Once youÂ’re stopped in a car with one-pedal driving, it should hold itself in place when you have your foot off the throttle, allowing you to relax your legs at lights. Applying pressure to the brake pedal would be unnecessary so long as traffic doesnÂ’t necessitate quicker deceleration than what the car is capable of via letting off on the throttle. The point, of all of the above, is that one-pedal driving in an EV or PHEV simply makes driving easier. Once you learn the car, not having to swap back and forth between the throttle and brake pedals makes stop-and-go traffic (or any kind of driving) a lot more relaxing to manage. The point of this story is to call out the lack of this feature in some EVs and nearly all PHEVs. Some of you may have already hit the comments to voice your disdain for one-pedal driving, but do note, while IÂ’m advocating for the feature to be present in all EVs, IÂ’m not advocating for it to be a required always-on feature. In fact, you should be able to turn it off and on at your whimsy. Many car manufacturers already offer one-pedal driving in their EVs, but companies like VW, Audi, Porsche and to a certain extent, Mercedes, do not. This is slightly irritating, mostly because those companies make some of the most desirable EVs on the market today.

Renault Scenic EV takes first place as (European) Car of the Year

Mon, Feb 26 2024

The automobile awards season may not be over, but two of the more prestigious annual races came closer to a climax this week. One might need a scorecard to keep track. We’re focused here on two events: the World Car of 2024, now reduced to three finalists in six categories. Then thereÂ’s the Car of the Year, known in some quarters as the European Car of the Year. Except that the car doesnÂ’t have to be European to win, only sold there. Got that? Winners out of the way first: At the Geneva Motor Show on Monday, the Renault Scenic E-Tech all-electric has been voted Car of the Year 2024. The Scenic is a fairly compact, somewhat stylish SUV for Europe only, and is the seventh vehicle from the French brand to win the award. It sells in the United Kingdom for about $47,500. The other six finalists that had made the first cut of voting in November were the BMW 5 Series, BYD Seal, Kia EV9, Peugeot E-3008/3008, Toyota C-HR, and Volvo EX30. The trophy winner was chosen by a jury of 59 motoring journalists from 22 countries. Scenic came in first place with 329 points. The Seal was the first Chinese-made car to make this awardÂ’s shortlist; it finished sixth out of seven, just up from the Toyota. One judge explained his decision to grant the Seal zero votes. Writing in Top Gear, Paul Horrell wrote this entertaining critique: “It looks good and is well specified, so makes a strong market entry. The advanced electric system and cobalt-free battery are commendable too, and it's enjoyable enough to drive quickly. That's undermined by an agitated ride over bumps, and the logic of screens and switches is pretty eccentric.” Recapping the World Car of the Year 2024 update, the sponsors shared the stage at Geneva on Monday with the Europeans as well, although they revealed only the top three finalists in six categories. For the ultimate prize, they are the Kia EV9, the Volvo EX30 and the BYD Seal. The winners will be announced March 27 at the New York International Auto Show. Here's more on the World Car finalists.
