I'm listing it for my friend and neighbor Greg who has treated it with the utmost care since he drove it new from the dealership 13 years ago. Metallic Nautical Blue Paint, an extra-cost color, still glistens and stands up to close inspection. No accidents, no rust, EVER! and not a '20-footer.' As result of his significant commute, Greg logged some 176 thousand - mostly freeway - miles. But because Greg was usually the only one in the smoke free car, the supple leather seats don't reflect its age. And if the mileage reading wasn't visible, the driver would think he was behind the wheel of a fairly new car. Even the Michelin tires have lots of wear remaining, and the care comes with its original window sticker showing the car's price of $31,575. I've been in and around cars as a hobby since I bought my first 1940 Chevrolet in 1952 and typically evaluate 'drivers' on a cost per mile basis. Considering you can buy this car for less than a lease vehicle's down payment, you can probably expect your next trouble-free 50,000 miles to cost about 5 cents a mile. Taking a look at other eBay offerings for similar Volvos will show good running ones approaching 250,000 miles. A new $35,000 car, for instance, will depreciate about $10,000 the first year. If you drive it 10,000 miles, cost is a dollar a mile. Makes 5 cents sound like a major transportation bargain. In addition to looking good, the car is currently registered and insured, has been regularly maintained by Signal Hill Foreign Auto Service (Signal Hill, CA) for the last three years and runs, shifts, rides and handles remarkably well, the latter assisted by its premium Michelin tires. Here's my overall assessment: For less than $3K, you get a very comfortable, safe, luxury-oriented vehicle that seats five with ease, is fuel efficient with its 5-speed adaptive transmission and presents extremely well. And there are three additional bonuses: a working electric sunroof to enjoy the evening air, a cold blowing air conditioning system for those hot days and cruise control for those long drives. So often I read eBay ads that say, "air condition blowing cool and was working, but 'just needs recharging'." What that typically means is that the compressor is shot and that a replacement will cost $1500 or more. Greg is offering this one with a low reserve (less than that lease car down payment). He's expecting the successful bidder to submit a $500 PayPal deposit within 48 hours of auction close and the remainder by cash or check, noting the car will be released when the check clears. If the buyer intends to ship the car, Greg will be happy to cooperate with the transportation company selected by the buyer. The car is located just east of Downtown Long Beach. This is a nice car and it's easy to get carried away describing it, so here's a caveat: To insure this car meets your expectations, personally inspect or have it inspected by a third party before you place a bid. Geely wants to be a tech-sharing 'friend' of Daimler in $9B bet
Sat, Feb 24 2018Chinese carmaker Geely has built up an almost 10-percent stake in Daimler in a $9 billion bet by its chairman that he can access the Mercedes-Benz owner's technology in the growing battle for the future of automotives. The purchase by Li Shufu, Geely's founder and main owner, means China's largest privately-owned automaker is now the biggest shareholder in Germany's Daimler. Geely said on Saturday there were no plans "for the time being" to raise the stake further. Instead, it will seek to forge an alliance with Daimler, which is developing electric and self-driving vehicles, to respond to the challenge from new competitors such as Tesla, Google and Uber. "No current car industry player is likely to win this battle against the invaders from outside without friends. To achieve and assert technological leadership, one has to adapt a new way of thinking in terms of sharing and combining strength. My investment in Daimler reflects this vision," Li said. "Daimler is pleased to announce that with Li Shufu it could win another long-term orientated shareholder, which is convinced by Daimler's innovation strength, strategy and future potential," the German company said in a statement. Geely officials plan to travel to Stuttgart to meet Daimler executives early next week and also hope to meet top German government officials in Berlin, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The Chinese firm plans to use the meetings to underline that it intends to be a supportive long-term investor, they said. Daimler had no immediate comment on any meetings. Geely and the German economy ministry declined to comment. Chinese investors in German technology companies have tended to take a consensual approach, buying incremental stakes in companies such as robotics firms Kuka and Kion, typically after long consultation with management and other stakeholders. In November, Geely asked Daimler to issue new shares so it could buy a stake, as a way to access Mercedes-Benz technology for electric cars and trucks, including battery technology, to help Geely comply with a Chinese crackdown on pollution. But the German company turned down the offer saying it did not want to dilute existing shareholders, sources at the time told Reuters. Li changed tactics, and quietly amassed a stake of 9.69 percent worth $9 billion at Daimler's current share price.
Volvo bringing Chinese-built cars to America beginning next year
Wed, 18 Jun 2014Just because the penetration of the American automotive market by Chinese brands hasn't quite happened yet doesn't mean that Chinese-built cars are far off. According to a new report, we could very soon see long-wheelbase Volvo S60s that were assembled in the People's Republic arriving on US shores.
The report comes from Automotive News China, which cites an anonymous Volvo exec. An official Volvo spokesperson later corroborated ANC's report, although where the original source claimed that we could see the Chinese-built S60L in US dealers at some point in 2015, the company line was that a timeline hadn't been established to begin exports from the world's most populous nation.
According to Volvo, the benefit to exporting from China to the United States rather than from Sweden is the relationship between the US dollar and the Chinese yuan. Overall, it's a less tumultuous issue than the dollar-to-euro situation. By moving vehicles from China to the US, the Chinese-owned company is limiting the degree of risk it's taking with sudden currency swings.
Volvo unveils all-new user interface destined for next-gen XC90 [w/video]
Thu, 27 Feb 2014Take a close look at the cabin of the Volvo Concept Estate shown above. One of the big features on the fancy, brown shooting brake is an all-new user interface called, well, it doesn't really have a name, at least not one Volvo is revealing.
The refreshingly nameless system looks seriously impressive based on the short video that accompany's the system's press release. The jewel of the whole interface is a sizable touchscreen that manages most every in-car function save for a few vital functions like volume, hazard lights and other systems that still demand a more tactile interface.
"The basic idea is to organize controls and information in a perfectly intuitive and user- friendly way. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient, and safe," Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's Senior Vice President of Design, said in a statement.
