Volvo is getting serious about its performance abilities. With the introduction of the new R Concept S60 R and V70 R sedan and wagon, respectively, the Swedish carmaker has announced to its primary competition that it is ready to do battle. And Volvo believes it can win.

Core of the R Concept vehicles is Volvo's active Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) and new 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Together, they transform the already powerful S60 and V70 into performance vehicles. With the addition of all-wheel drive, these vehicles have capabilities other manufacturers will be chasing after. Volvo feels the two new vehicles will compete against the Audi A4 3.0 quattro, BMW 330xi, Infiniti G35, Lexus IS300 and Mercedes-Benz C320.

The Four-C chassis allows the Volvo to be driven as a "normal" sedan, a "sporty" sedan or as an "aggressive" sedan (or wagon). We had the opportunity to try the different modes on both a slalom course and the asphalt of Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

On the slalom course, our first laps were with the suspension set to "comfort." There was considerable lean in the corners, oversteer and understeer in the areas designed to show these traits and nose-dipping on braking. With the suspension set to "aggressive," which Volvo recommends only for serious driving, the car was flat through all corners, exhibited neutral steering characteristics and was flat on braking and acceleration.

Obviously, the car was a hoot to drive on the track as well. We didn't have the entire 1.5-mile oval, but parts of the main track and an infield road circuit.

The true test was on the road. We drove the S60 R over the roads of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in southern Nevada. This is beautiful desert, with both long flat stretches and some interesting curves. These were roads ideally suited to a performance vehicle. Whether we were in "comfort" or "sport," the ride was nearly ideal. There were some sections with rough asphalt that saw road noise transmitted into the cabin, but otherwise the ride was excellent. In "aggressive" mode, the ride was slightly harsher, but not unpleasant.

Volvo's test ride also took us down the Las Vegas Strip. Why? To show that the S60 R is also tractable in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. And if you have to drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic, why not do it in an interesting environment? The Four-C concept is based on the ability to process enormous amounts of information related to the rotational speed and vertical movement of each wheel, steering wheel deflection and velocity, cornering, engine torque, and braking intervention by ABS. For example, th3e shock absorbers are updated with new information 500 times a second. Volvo collaborated with high-tech system developer Ohlins Racing AB and shock absorber manufacturer Monroe for the shock absorbers.

Also, under severe braking, the Four-C system receives the braking information a few milliseconds before the brake pads touch the disc. By then the microprocessor had computed how much the braking will cause the front end of the car to dive, and uses this information to set the shock absorbers to maximize control and tire grip. I HATE it when a car is smarter than I am.

The R Concept cars use the biggest brakes Volvo has ever used, with 12.9-inch ventilated discs front and rear. These cars are also Volvos, with all the safety equipment one would want in a car or wagon; air bags all over the place, well-designed performance seats, a solid body structure, etc. And they are luxurious, with super leather in the up-level options. The cloth seats ain't bad either, but if you're going to go with the up-level R Concept, why not go all the way with the seats as well?

Those of us on the test drive agreed that here was a car we could buy for our less-adventurous wives, who would use it in "comfort" mode. Then on the weekends we could take the car/wagon, switch the setting to "sport" or "aggressive" and have a ball.

The best of all possible worlds.

Volvo to build range-topping S90 sedan in China

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

Volvo is furthering its deep ties in China by announcing a major expansion to its factory in Daqing that will equip the site to build its future S90 sedan. The automaker is promising to make the plant, "one of the most advanced car making facilities in China," according to its press release. Unfortunately, the company isn't specifying the amount being invested or how long the work will take.
Because the northeastern Chinese city of Daqing owns about 37 percent of the automaker, the location for the significant expansion isn't entirely surprising, especially since Geely owns a majority stake in the Swedish brand. The existing factory there employs about 700 people to build the original XC90 for the local market, but the upgrades will allow the plant to handle Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture modular platform.
To be fair, Volvo doesn't specifically call out the S80-replacing S90 by name in its announcement. However, it promises the first vehicle built in Daqing after the expansion will be a new premium sedan, and the upgrades will allow the plant to make "most innovative vehicles in its product range," and the range-topping sedan is widely expected to adopt the S90 moniker.

Volvo Cars' earnings top pre-pandemic levels in boost ahead of possible IPO

Fri, Jul 23 2021

STOCKHOLM — Volvo Cars reported a return to profit in the first half as demand for electric cars pushed earnings above pre-pandemic levels, putting the carmaker on a firmer footing as it considers a possible IPO this year. Sweden-based Volvo, owned by China's Geely Holding, said on Friday it made a first-half profit of 13.24 billion Swedish crowns ($1.52 billion), more than double its profit of 5.52 billion crowns in the corresponding period of 2019, before the coronavirus struck. Like several other automakers Volvo has been forced to cut production due to global shortages of semiconductors, but it said a strong market recovery from last year's plunge during the pandemic helped first-half revenue rise by 26% to 141 billion crowns. "The pandemic effect, when it comes to our business, we don't see it anymore," Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson told Reuters. "All our employees have not been vaccinated yet, but sales and production are really back to where we were." The company, which is eyeing an initial public offering before the end of this year, said all its regions showed solid growth and improved market shares, with chargeable cars representing 25% of total sales. Samuelsson said the evaluation process ahead of a potential IPO was progressing according to plan, adding the firm was still considering listing on the Stockholm stock exchange in the second half of 2021. "The company stands stronger than ever and we are in the midst of a very substantial transformation ... It has to be financed and access to the stock market is of course positive then," Samuelsson said. Volvo Cars had been heavily affected at the start of the pandemic, plunging to a 989 million loss in the first half of 2020. The company on Friday kept its second-half outlook for flat sales and revenue growth year on year, "unless supply of semiconductors improves". It said earlier this month that first-half sales rose 41% to 380,757 cars. The Gothenburg-based firm plans to become a fully electric car maker by 2030, sell 600,000 battery electric vehicles at mid-decade, and build a European battery gigafactory in 2026. Volvo XC40 delayed because it's too big for its own good?

Thu, 11 Jul 2013

As fuel prices rise and greenhouse gases poke holes in the ozone, big, gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles are becoming less popular as smaller, cleaner vehicles, such as crossovers, gain market share. Volvo is late to the small crossover party, though it wants to build the XC40 crossover to compete with the Land Rover Evoque. The only problem with that, Autocar reports, is that a suitable (read: small enough) platform for it is up to five years away, despite a hopeful photos of it in testing guise.
Volvo is currently developing a new platform, called SPA (Scaleable Platform Architecture), to underpin its next-generation of vehicles, such as the 2014 XC60 pictured above and the S60 sedan, which is likely the smallest vehicle that would be able to use the new platform. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be a quick fix for the gaping hole in Volvo's lineup, and Geely, the Chinese budget car manufacturer that owns Volvo, is reportedly preparing to launch a mid-market brand that may or may not be sold outside of China.
Can't Swedish car manufacturers catch a break?
