1997 Volvo 854 T-5M

After 5 wonderful years of Volvo ownership, My car must be passed on to another Volvo enthusiast. It will be missed as a dear friend... This car although drivable and reliable needs work and is to be considered a project car. It has been my project since 2009. In order for it to pass inspection it will need at the minimum rear brake rotors, pads, and calipers, rear tires, passenger rear trailing arm. It has a lot of little flaws as expected with a 17 year old car. Starting with It leaks oil, approx 1 qt a month but its enough to leave an oil spot, occasional blue smoke on startup depending on how long it sits, alignment is slightly off, almost every body panel has paint flaws, chips, scratches, dents, etc., hood latch release behind the grille is broken, rear passenger door has an indent from a rock, passenger side skirt is broken in front of rear wheel. Interior is your typical late 90's 850, some pieces are broken, missing. Interior was ratty and leather was cracked so the front seats and carpet were changed, Dash was cracked and replaced with a black cover. The lower rear was removed, Headliner was dirty and replaced with a plaid sheet of material but now sagging, The front valance was cabinet trim but was scraped so I removed it for the winter months. A/C still works and blows cold and the heat works well but sometimes it has a slight coolant smell (common) It has the stock ECU and it runs rich and doesn't have "rev-hold" so it may seem a little jerky while decelerating. The BOV is not connected as that was a failed project and did not work with the stock diverter valve. Hopefully I have covered most of its flaws.

For the most part I have kept up on most of its common issues. The PCV and catch can as well as the throttle body have been recently cleaned, replaced fuel pump and relay, timing belt was done approx 50k ago. The turbo spools up as it should, doesn't leak or blow smoke, Struts, mounts, spring seats, springs, subframe bushings and lower control arms were changed approx 20k ago. Transmission gear oil has been changed with amsoil gl5 approx 20k and have run rotella T5-T6 since I've owned it. Recently the radiator cracked and it now has brand new radiator and coolant.

Most of the pics are from last summer, currently it has stock T-5 16" colombias. The 18" S60R  wheels DO NOT come with this sale, They have been sold. Its sitting on B&G lowering springs with a decent stance.

The mileage is unknown, I purchased it with 192K and broken odometer and replaced the gauges with an s70 cluster. I would guess its mileage is close to 300K. It starts as it should, idles smooth and accelerates hard, plenty of power enough to break tires loose. The Manual swap and exhaust opened this car right up. Not only more powerful in all the right areas, also more efficient and ultimately a real joy to drive.

Mods:
Lowered B&G springs
M56L Manual swap
OEM volvo clutch, Still feels new
3" turbo back exhaust, Sounds great
6000K HID's
Reverse intercooler piping / Functional but could use work
S70 gauge cluster
Black/Tan interior
35% tint

It kills me to let this car go, I have put a lot of time into it but its time to move on..
With the right amount of work and maintenance this can be an awesome car and can still last a long time. It is drivable but is not inspected so drive away at your own risk or tow. The last few pics are how it currently looks and includes the stock radio with code.

Thanks for looking and hopefully you will enjoy this Volvo as much as I have... Cheers

Junkyard Gem: 1997 Volvo V90

Tue, Jul 6 2021

Volvo's "Brick Era" of squared-off rear-wheel-drive machines lasted from the debut of the 144 in 1966 all the way through the 900 Series cars of the 1990s, with the wildly successful 240 being the most iconic of the breed on our shores. The final chapter of the Swedish Brick saga came in the 1997 and 1998 model years, when the 960 sedan and wagon were rebadged as the S90 and V90, respectively. Here's one of those cars, a refrigerator-colored (and refrigerator-shaped) V90 wagon that got forcibly retired after a crash in Northern California. Volvo revived the V90 name in 2016, and you can buy a new V90 right now if you so choose. Today's Junkyard Gem, however, is the culmination of four decades of improvement to the original 140 design (itself based on much of the Amazon's chassis features and sharing plenty of components with the 1940s-era PV Series cars), while the current V90 comes straight out of the 21st century. I've been going out of my way to document just about every discarded 140 and 240 wagon I find, with some 740s and 940s mixed in. Many Volvo longroof owners still maintain a fanatical devotion to the rear-wheel-drive bricks, and I've found some of these cars in junkyards with impressively high final odometer readings. The fuel-efficiency and interior-space limitations of the old-timey brick design kept 960 sales lower than those of their predecessors, though, and I haven't met any 960 owners who share the level of devotion that 145 and 245 owners lavish on their cars. This car just squeaked past 150,000 miles during its 24 years on the road. The body and interior look to have been in very nice condition, showing that meticulous owners took good care of this car throughout its life, but then it got T-boned on the right side. This sort of damage isn't worth fixing on a quarter-century-old European wagon, and so here it sits. This engine compartment looks very similar to that of the old 240, though this modern 3.0-liter, DOHC straight-six and its 181 horses runs counter to the super-sensible spirit of most of those 1970s Goteborg bricks. The 960 was far more plush than its ancestors, and priced accordingly. In 1997, this car's list price started at $35,850 (about $60,660 in 2021 dollars). By comparison, a new 1975 245 wagon had an MSRP of $5,795 (about $29,940 today).

Volvo shows glimpses of new Concept C Coupe ahead of Frankfurt [w/video]

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Volvo has released a short teaser video for a concept car that will be unveiled on August 29 ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. At first glance, it would appear to be nothing more than a few sketches and some words from Volvo design boss Thomas Ingenlath, but at about the 11-second mark, four images are flashed on the screen revealing the true nature of the video - the Volvo Concept C Coupe.
As Inglenlath suggests in the video, this new concept is designed to help bring more excitement to the brand's lineup, and from what we can tell in these strategically captured shots, the company is definitely on to something. While we don't get too much of look from any one angle, the front reveals what appears to be a concave version of Volvo's signature grille and the side shows off a stylish greenhouse. We have to wonder, do these images confirm the identity of the mystery concept car that's been floating around the Internet this week? In either case, our favorite view is perhaps the rear shot giving us a glimpse of the car's name as well as its flat, wide haunches and C-shaped taillights.
Scroll down to watch the whole video, and if you don't have a trigger-quick mouse finger, don't worry. We made a gallery of screen shots showing the four embedded images.

Volvo P1800-based gasser is UK's entry in the Hot Wheels Legends Tour

Fri, Oct 15 2021

Hot Wheels has spent the past few months touring the United States in search of the next custom car it will add to its catalog of 1/64-scale diecast models. It's not stopping there: It also headed to the United Kingdom to add a bit of international flair to the competition, and it selected a Volvo P1800 that has been heavily modified into a gasser as the winner that will move on to the semifinal round. Owner Lee Johnstone explained he built his P1800 — which he nicknamed "Ain't no Saint" — starting with a bare shell that had been stripped and that was too far gone to properly restore. Volvo's 1960s four-cylinder engines are famously tunable, but Johnstone looked across the pond for an engine suitable to make his dream car a reality. He chose a 454-cubic-inch V8 sourced from the Chevrolet parts bin and supercharged to develop about 600 horsepower. Ain't no Saint reportedly runs a 10.01-second quarter mile at 133 mph. Johnstone regularly races the P1800 with his three daughters. He consequently named his team Johnstone & Daughters (JD) Racing. "This is a beautiful example of a gasser — a drag racer with street car form. Often with dragsters, the chassis is so important that the body gets overlooked, but this example is fabulous with great attention to detail," explained former Jaguar design director Ian Callum, who was one of the judges that selected the P1800 as the United Kingdom's finalist. "It completely hits the Hot Wheels brief." Hot Wheels has already released several gassers, including one based on a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Time will tell if Johnstone's P1800 will become the next addition to the series. Its next stop is the global semifinal round scheduled for November 4, 2021, where it will compete against some of the previous winners. There are two semifinal rounds taking place before the grand finale planned for November 13.
