There wre two incidents involving insurance claims – one door ding and the second involved a tree branch that landed on the hood. In both cases it was cosmetic damage. The car has never been in an accident. Two mechanical issues which were solved - one with a slower than usual acceleration (solved at the ECU level) and a clunking in the front end (solved by replacing a suspension arm). All service and repairs (mechanical and body) were performed at the dealership (Carling Motors, Ottawa). The major 100Km. service interval was just performed ($1000) as well as new front brake pads and rotors ($450). The car's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) has been flashed with the latest version. Current State: The car has three door dings and 4 smallish scrapes on the bumper and rims and a few nicks in the interior. Everything electrical and mechanical is functioning perfectly. The acceleration is as strong as it was 10 years ago (therein lies the difference between Volvo and the Germans). The paint and interior are exceptionally clean. The highlights of this car are; low mileage; predicted dependability; comfort (the seats are best in the business); performance; safety; space; a very good audio system. Durability: Volvo tries to build all their cars with longevity in mind. When they succeed the results are extraordinary and I believe this S80 is one such example. Below I have listed a number of web sites below that post professional and owner's reviews on this car. As you read through the reviews keep this in mind - “Generally, if you take care of a car, it will last.” After owning 3 Volvos over 20 years I know this to be true. (Please note some of the reviews are related to the normally aspirated 2.8 litre and to earlier model years). There are the usual amount of haters. http://www.cars.com/volvo/s80/2004/expert-reviews http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/2004-Volvo-S80-Reviews-c5987 http://www.carsurvey.org/reviews/volvo/s80/2004/ Idiosyncrasies: Typical of this generation of S80's is an intermittent clunking noises from the undercarriage. The noise usually appears after a slow impact bump, such as a unusually high speed bump. It may hang around for a few hours and then quiets down. These noises are a result of a misaligned cover at the top of the front struts. It is not a structural nor safety issue. Repalcing the covers is not worth the money. BTW - I haven't heard anything for almost two months now. There is a K&N air filter installed as a performance enhancement. While it does improve performance the in-city gas mileage is reduced by 22-25%. Funny though, the highway mileage stays the same. The installation of the standard Volvo air filter would bring the mileage back to normal. Price: $7900 The Canadian Black Book lists the Trade-in value (what the dealer will give you) between $5141 and $7991. The same site suggests the average asking price is $8943. http://www.canadianblackbook.com/black-book-values/index/display/neworused/used/year/2004/make/Volvo/postalcode/K1S0B6/model/S80/mode/marketanalysis/trim/T6/style/4D%20Sedan/ VMR Canada (associated with Edmonds) lists the S80 as wholesale $7900 and retail $10,075. http://www.vmrcanada.com/value_menus/canprices/04vv80es.html The current national average (Auto Trader, Kijiji, eBay) is $8060 for cars with 50-100% more mileage. Given all of the above I think the asking price is reasonable (and relaistic). Volvo: Tesla's Autopilot is just a 'wannabe'
Fri, Apr 29 2016Using the words "unsupervised wannabe" in an interview with The Verge, Volvo's Trent Victor says the Tesla Autopilot is "giving the impression it's doing more than it is." According to Victor, Tesla's self-driving tech is merely appearing to be autonomous because, with the Tesla system, the driver has to be fully alert all the time, ready to regain control. Tesla says its system is Level 2 autonomous, although some experts regard it as Level 3, which means it takes over safety-critical functions from the driver. Volvo says it pays more attention to actual crash avoidance, and that its Drive Me system is Level 4 autonomous, meaning that in the event of a hazardous situation the vehicle will handle the appropriate procedures and bring itself to a halt in a safe fashion. There will be no need for the driver to take action, which is important in case the driver has been incapacitated while the Drive Me autopilot has been controlling the car. Another thing with the Volvo setup is that it monitors the road in case of a conflict situation, or someone suddenly appearing in front of the car, be it a pedestrian or a runaway child. Tesla has never said that its Autopilot is anything other than a beta version under trial usage. It costs $2,500 when you purchase your Model 2 or X, or $3,000 as a add-on once you've taken delivery. The company also just announced that it would offer Autopilot for free as part of a one-month trial. Tesla declined to comment on Volvo's comment. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volvo XC40 Recharge score high in IIHS tests
Thu, Apr 22 2021New electric cars continue their streak of impressive crash test results. The two latest to go through Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing are the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E and the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge. The former earned a Top Safety Pick award, and the latter picked up the Top Safety Pick+ commendation. Both vehicles got the top "Good" rating in every crash test, as well as the "Superior" rating for vehicle-to-vehicle collision prevention. They deviate when it comes to headlights and vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention. Because the Volvo has headlights rated "Good" on all trims, it got that extra "+" on its Top Safety Pick award. The Ford also has high-rated headlights available, but the standard units got the second lowest rating of "Marginal." As for the vehicle-to-pedestrian collision prevention, the Volvo received the second-highest "Advanced" rating, while the Ford was rated "Superior." Among the electric cars IIHS has tested, the Ford and Volvo continue a streak of high scores. The organization has evaluated the Audi E-Tron in both its body styles, as well as the Tesla Model 3, both of which get the Top Safety Pick+ rating. As a result of the XC40 Recharge's test score, Volvo pointed out that it is the only automaker whose entire lineup has received a Top Safety Pick+ rating. These are the top luxury cars bought by people entering the segment for the first time
Fri, 25 Jul 2014Let's say you just got a big promotion at work or the kids are moving out of the house, and you finally have some extra money. You decide to blow it all at once and treat yourself by upgrading your ride. Naturally, you look to a luxury automaker. What do you choose?
Models like the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class may be tailor-made to introduce buyers to the premium segment, but a new study finds that they don't garner the highest rates of non-luxury customer conquests. It turns out that a Volvo leads among folks moving up to a premium brand, and it isn't even one that's made anymore, at that.
A recent study by Polk and IHS Automotive looked at what models had the highest rates of buyers upgrading from a non-luxury segment. The information comes from its new vehicle registration data through April 2014. All ten top models boasted conquest rates of over 50 percent, but the Volvo C70 led the field with 68.01 percent of its customers coming from non-premium brands.
