Up for bid is a fully restored (ground up) Volvo 240 wagon with 15,000 miles since rebuild. I bought this car 4 years ago as a temporary driver but the body was so clean and sound (and my wife fell in love with it) that we decided to build a new car rather than buy one. Regardless what mileage we found when shopping for a 240, they still needed something or we were unsure what had been done and when, by whom, parts brands, etc. Car has a clean South Dakota title - we spend the summers with my inlaws (they are in their 80's) so the car is garage stored in Toledo and only driven when we're here in the summer months. We're shortly losing our storage and are moving ourselves so there is no room for a 3rd car.  This is the ONLY reason we are selling this.

Body was stripped to a shell (glass and all) and repainted. A later style (93) rear hatch with flush mount glass, new rear side glass flush seals, new windshield, power windows and power heated mirrors were added. Black turbo body moldings, trims, handles and hinges were also added. Rare snow caps on the cowl vents. New OE Cibie tail lamps and e-code European glass headlamps (with Expel protectant film) were installed. Side markers also added. Tint is 35% front; 15% sides. If for any reason your state does not allow this, I will have it removed before pick up. I do not notice it as being too dark in any way or at any time - reduces glare, cools the interior, keeps things from being sun baked and interior items from being seen. Also included is a new front plate bracket if needed.

Every bushing on the car was replaced with OE Volvo brand (no cheap chi-com garbage). Ipd sways were added. A completely new 2 1/2" exhaust from front to back including a catalytic converter, resonator and muffler was installed. All new brakes, brake lines, calipers and rotors. All new wheel bearings, Boge-Sachs front and rear shocks/struts, upper strut mounts (Volvo OE). Ball joints, tie rod ends, and new steering rack.

The motor is a 1993 B230 that was rebuilt to new specs. A T-cam was added (stock Volvo turbo) for better low end power. Head gasket is a tight squish Cometic which increases the compression ratio and allows for lower octane fuel usage with no adverse side effects. A 93 AW70 transmission was also overhauled and installed. All new mounts and u-joints. Of course all new hoses, belts, timing belt, tensioner, and seals. Both the chassis fuel pump and intank pump are new Bosch. Intank is the larger capacity (turbo) upgrade. The cast boss on the block for an oil return was drilled, tapped and plugged for an easier upgrade to turbo if ever so desired. Fuel injection was upgraded to LH 2.4. Injectors were all new/rebuilds. Battery is 2 yrs old.

Completely new AC system - 1993 style. R134a and is COLD. New condenser, compressor, accumulator, pressure switch, o-rings and hoses. Power steering pump is the later, more efficient style. Alternator is a 100A Bosch unit. Headlamps are H4 styled and wired with relays for the direct (55w) upgrade.

The interior is black cloth from a 1993. The black cloth with the dark blue exterior looks incredible - a combo Volvo never offered. Newer crack free dash. Rubber mats all around. Sony CD/mp3 player with aux jack (for ipod). Boston Acoustic Pro speakers in the front doors with a custom tweeter mount behind the mirror covers. Lighted power window switches (ala 960), a new blower motor, and heater valve. Instrument cluster was completely rebuilt with custom (in a Volvo OE style) gauge faces, and fitted for LEDs. You've never seen a 240 dash light up this good! It reads the mileage from the car's rebuild: 15,000 and counting.

Car sits on Volvo Nova 15" alloys wrapped in 195/65R15 Pirelli P6's with just over 5k on them. Rides and handles like a dream - by far the nicest 240 I have ever seen. We get complements everywhere we go with it.

Volvo details new drive assist features for next XC90 and future models [w/video]

Mon, 08 Jul 2013

Volvo wants us to know what kinds of new technology will be under the sheetmetal of the offerings that will sit on its Scalable Platform Architecture, the first of which will be included on the 2015 Volvo XC90 arriving at the end of next year. The silicon-chip onslaught starts with detection and auto braking for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The company's animal detection tech now works at night thanks to better cameras and exposure controls.
Also due for the high-riding wagon are road edge and barrier detection with steer assist, a setup that identifies the edge of the road - even ones without markings. The system can steer the car back into its lane if it detects the driver is about to leave the road or collide with a barrier. Adaptive cruise control with steer assist allows the car to not only follow the flow of traffic on a straight road, but steer itself automatically.
Beyond that, the company is planning on other safety advances, but these will rely on automaker cooperation and infrastructure upgrades. Volvo has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium on the subject of standards for communication between cars and wants to have it implemented by 2016. Sensors in traffic lights will enable Green Light Optimum Speed Advisory, which tells a driver how fast to go on a give stretch of road so as not to hit a red light. Weather, road condition, road works and emergency vehicle warnings will also inform drivers of new developments on the road. And autonomous parking, which Volvo has already demonstrated, stands to put a lot of valets out of work since it allows the car to find its own parking space without a driver inside.

Uber hopes facilities in Detroit will help shape its autonomous future

Mon, Sep 19 2016

Hot off the heels of unleashing its fleet of self-driving vehicles in Pittsburgh, PA, Uber announced plans to open a new facility in the Detroit, MI area, reports Automotive News. The new facility was announced at an event hosted by Society of Automotive Engineers in Detroit, MI. Uber's vice president of global vehicle programs Sherif Marakby revealed the news, reports Automotive News. The facility is meant to help the ride-sharing company collaborate with suppliers and automakers in the area. There's no word on where Uber will build the new facility or how big it will be, as those factors have yet to be determined. Just like Pittsburgh, PA, Detroit, MI could become another testing ground for the ride-sharing company. The latest move to open a facility in the Detroit area comes after Uber offered users in Pittsburgh the chance to ride in one of its autonomous vehicle as it looks to gain vital real-world testing. Uber is utilizing a fleet of modified Ford Fusions. Earlier this year in April, the automaker announced a partnership with Google, Lyft, Uber, and Volvo to develop autonomous cars. A new facility in Detroit would strengthen the partnership and help Uber, as well as Ford put autonomous vehicles on the road faster. New Volvo ad remembers the joy of rear-facing jump seats

Mon, 19 May 2014

With the rise in popularity of first the minivan and later the crossover as the default family vehicle, there have been about 20 years of children who have missed out on the joy of rear-facing jump seats in station wagons. It means kids today don't know the pleasure to be found in making faces or lewd gestures at other drivers while their parents can't see. Plus, they don't know the slightly nauseous feeling of watching the world pass by in reverse. However, a group of filmmakers look back with nostalgia at this increasingly uncommon automotive feature in a new ad for the 2015 Volvo V60.
As part of its sponsorship of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, Volvo commissions a team each year to create an advertisement to be shown during the festival. This year's shows how the company's buyers have gone from riding in the back to driving the brand's cars. Scroll down to check out the charming ad, along with some wistful looks at classic Volvo wagons, before the jump seat is forgotten.
