Up for auction is my 1979 Volvo 244. This is a great, solid car with only 117,110 miles on it. It has been a project car of mine that I just don’t have time or money to complete. It a great example of an early 240 and will be awesome when the new owner finishes it off. I am the third owner, with the first owner having it from ’79-2001, then I got it from the second owner in 2005 or 2006 (I don’t remember!).

The most notable thing about the car is the relatively low mileage and the solid rust free body. In addition, the interior is overall in excellent condition. The car has been sitting in my driveway for 3 years now and not driven. In the years when I first owned it I drove it and it runs and drives wonderfully. I had it repainted 2 summers ago by a local vocational-technical school and I drove it to and from their shop, it drove great then too.

This car is really solid. The floor pan, rocker panels and doors are all strong solid metal. I cannot find any rust under the car, you can bang on the floor and hear how solid it is. Look at the pics I have of the door sills and rockers, and the rear end floor.

The engine starts and runs strong. The interior and dash are in excellent shape for the age. There is only one small crack on the dash. All the glass is original. This car is not perfect, it has little issues (for example, the driver’s side speaker doesn’t work and the grille emblem fell out, etc) that will make it a great project car and someday it will be a show winner. I am sad to see it go and have described it as accurately as I could.

If your expectations are reasonable, you will definitely fall in love with this vintage Volvo! SEE BELOW FOR MANY DETAILED PICTURES

Check my feedback, I make a real effort to accurately represent all of my items and this car is no different. Please ask questions to learn more.

This car is, overall, in very good, original condition.  As you walk around the car, or drive it, it is impressive to see the condition of all the items that you would expect to be a mess on a car of this vintage.  However, the car is not perfect.

In the time I have owned it I have had the following work performed:

New OE Volvo Steel spare tire wells were welded in. There had been small amounts of rust on the spare wells which were repaired by an expert Volvo body guy. He also repaired some dents in the passenger side.

The car was repainted by the voc-tech school in Ford Cocoa Metallic Brown. There are some imperfections in the paint job, but it looks good from 5 feet away. I have some of the paint if you want to touch it up.

Complete tune up, fuel filter, cam seal, new battery, timing belt, water pump, transmission mount, exhaust pipe, oil pressure switch, oil change, have all been done in the last 6,000 miles or more recently.  The car runs strong.

I physically installed a rare tachometer into the cluster, however it is not yet wired up.

I rebuilt and recovered the seats with brown covers from a newer 240. The front seats were upgraded to the new (taller) style 240 seat. The rears were recovered and the rear arm rest is from a newer car, so it is too big.

THE BAD:

Because the car has been sitting, there could be issues that will only be revealed during daily use. I am disclosing everything I know about.

The heater fan is dead.

The auto tranny has a small fluid leak, I am told it is common and an easy fix.

It will need tires, the wheel/tire combo pictured on the car is not included however the original steel wheels and hubcaps are included (also pictured). The tires on those wheels are junk.

The brakes worked fine 2 summers ago, but I suspect they will need servicing/replacing.

The trunk/rear needs some reassembly from the paint and body work, parts are in the trunk.

The AC system needs work, it doesn’t run.

There is a crack in one taillight reverse lens.

The car comes with a small selection of spare parts including:

A spare gas tank (nothing wrong with the existing tank, I just happened to get one for free).

The original rear seat armrest.

A spare black headrest for the driver’s seat.

Volvo Pure Tension concept folds solar charging pavilion into trunk

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

Even by the 'anything-goes' standards of concept cars, this one is a head-spinner: the "Pure Tension" Volvo V60 Pavilion, commissioned by Volvo Italy and winner of the Pure Volvo Pavilion Design competition. The alien form seen hovering all over the rendered V60 is a pavilion, as in the kind erected for trade shows or outdoor events. Developed by Synthesis Design + Architecture, Buro Happold, and Fabric Images, the pavilion is a flexible mesh structure held in place by a carbon fiber rods.
What's more, the mesh is embedded with photovotaic cells so that the pavilion can absorb energy from the sun or indoor lighting, making it a portable charging station. It can power itself or the crossover, the V60 at the center of it all being a diesel hybrid that plugs straight into the pavilion. When it's time to go, the entire structure can be folded small enough to fit in the trunk of the car.
We're told it will be shown in September in Rome. Even if we never see this particular creation on the streets, it's comfortable proof that our future will eventually be wilder than we can imagine.

Volvo S60 Polestar Concept looking Smurfy in Jay Leno's Garage

Tue, 22 Jan 2013

Is it just us, or has Jay Leno's Garage evolved from an intimate, off-the-cuff video series designed to show off the late-night comedian's automobile collection into something a lot more ambitious and... mainstream? This isn't a complaint, exactly, as Leno has been putting out engaging videos at an increasingly furious pace. However, we can't help but note that the subjects have largely graduated from the funnyman's steam-powered eccentricities and forgotten classics to lots of new production and concept cars, often with automaker execs in tow. It's almost as if the series is turning into an internet version of his NBC talk show, one where bigwigs swing by to show off their latest projects as part of their publicity tours, only instead of new movies and albums, it's cars or the occasional motorcycle.
Such is the exactly case with Volvo's stonking S60 Polestar Concept, which makes its appearance in Jay's warehouse of wonders this week. Tuned by in-house skunkworks Polestar, the "Swedish Racing Blue" S60 has certainly been making the rounds as of late, with recent appearances near Leno's garage at the LA Auto Show and an Auto Motor und Sport track faceoff against the BMW M3 and Audi RS4 Avant.
Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that Volvo is so keen to get its showcar in front of the cameras - last we heard, executives were seriously considering a small production run for their unlikely 508-horsepower, all-wheel drive sport sedan, though we continue to hear that realistic pricing is likely to be a roadblock.

Volvo to build range-topping S90 sedan in China

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

Volvo is furthering its deep ties in China by announcing a major expansion to its factory in Daqing that will equip the site to build its future S90 sedan. The automaker is promising to make the plant, "one of the most advanced car making facilities in China," according to its press release. Unfortunately, the company isn't specifying the amount being invested or how long the work will take.
Because the northeastern Chinese city of Daqing owns about 37 percent of the automaker, the location for the significant expansion isn't entirely surprising, especially since Geely owns a majority stake in the Swedish brand. The existing factory there employs about 700 people to build the original XC90 for the local market, but the upgrades will allow the plant to handle Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture modular platform.
To be fair, Volvo doesn't specifically call out the S80-replacing S90 by name in its announcement. However, it promises the first vehicle built in Daqing after the expansion will be a new premium sedan, and the upgrades will allow the plant to make "most innovative vehicles in its product range," and the range-topping sedan is widely expected to adopt the S90 moniker.
