I fell in love with this vehicle when I first saw her, and love her still . . . but it's time to let go.

This was 2004's Motor Trend SUV of the year for good reason.  It was well ahead of it's time and, in many ways, remains so. She was fully loaded when I purchased her new in 2004 for almost $53,000.

She has every option imaginable, including the full air suspension, rear differential lock, electronic parking assist front and back, the Premium Plus package which includes navigation and a premium audio system.  A cold weather package was also optioned, which includes a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats.
A frame hitch was added.

The teak leather remains in immaculate condition, and is much nicer than that found on contemporary versions.  She has a power telescoping and tilting wheel.

If you are shopping this vehicle, you probably know what it's about.  She is built like a tank; overbuilt, in fact, and she was designed in conjunction with Porsche.  It is a good looking vehicle even today -- in fact, I was recently asked whether she was a Porsche.

This vehicle has been very well maintained, with synthetic oil changes every 4,000 miles.

She has recently enjoyed some substantial work, about $8,000 worth, at the local VW dealership.  Among the very recent maintenance:  new timing belt, thermostat and water pump; intake manifold with vacuum actuators; engine breather valve/purge valve; cam adjuster seals; differential lock motor; air bag harness; and a complete fuel system replacement (main and aux fuel pumps, filter regulator, transfer lines and suction jets).  The transmission was recently checked for wear, and no metal or abnormal wear was discovered.

Now for the anticipated wear:  there are minor scuffs, and a scrape on the driver's side front bumper seen in the pics.  There is some button peeling in the interior, which is a common issue in this model.  The tire pressure monitoring light is on.  There are some cracks in the wood trim, but minor and not really noticeable except on close inspection.  There are two small chips in the front windshield, both smaller than a dime, neither in the line of sight and neither spreading.  I suspect that there may be a need for a new valve body; it's not a concern to me, though, because I do not have a lead foot.  About 7/32 tread left.

She is a solid vehicle and remains my preferred daily driver.

Of course, given her age, she must be sold as is, where is.  But I have done my best to provide an accurate representation of current condition.

Good Luck Bidding!  A reasonable reserve has been set.  Buyer responsible for shipping, but I will assist in coordination.

Workers at Mississippi auto supplier protesting low wages

Tue, Feb 24 2015

Workers at an automotive seat factory in Mississippi are protesting what they say are low wages and poor working conditions as they attempt to unionize in what could become a new front for the United Auto Workers in the state. A group of workers and supporters at the Faurecia SA seating plant in Cleveland plans a Tuesday march. "We work an auto job and we're getting paid like Wal-Mart wages," said Jamarqus Reed, a 32-year-old Pace resident who has worked at the plant for almost 10 years. "We're trying to better ourselves." Nationally, the UAW has staked its future on unionizing Southern auto factories, with limited success so far. The union has been trying to organize Nissan Motor Co.'s Canton, MS, plant for years, and lost a 2008 worker vote at a Johnson Controls plant in nearby Madison that French-based Faurecia bought in 2011. The UAW narrowly lost a unionization vote at the Volkswagen AG plant in Chattanooga, TN, last year, but the union has since qualified for a new labor policy at the plant that grants access to meeting space and to regular discussions with management. The policy stops short of collective bargaining rights. The union is also trying to organize Nissan's assembly plant in Smyrna, TN, and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. Protesters say Faurecia employees make a top wage of $11.64 per hour, while contract workers make $7.73 an hour. Company spokesman Tony Sapienza said that with overtime, the typical Faurecia employee makes more than the $27,000 a year that is the median wage around Cleveland. Wages are often low in the heavily impoverished Delta. "We are very confident that we are offering a very competitive wage," Sapienza said. Organizers criticize use of lower-paid contract workers Shannon Greenidge, a 44-year-old Cleveland resident, said she worked for a labor agency for more than two years before being hired directly by Faurecia. Greenidge said she makes $9.29 an hour, and can't save for retirement or to send her 11-year-old daughter to college. "That's not going to help me down the line in life," she said. Union supporters say as many as half the workers at the plant work for a contract-labor agency. Sapienza said that while the number varies, the company expects 15 percent of its workforce will be temporary employees this year. The UAW has organized some Southern auto parts plants in recent years, including Faurecia plants in Cottondale, Alabama, in 2012 and Louisville, Kentucky in 2013.

Meet ZelectricBug, the amazing '63 VW Bug converted to EV power

Thu, Feb 27 2014

No word a lie, we here at AutoblogGreen are fans of classic cars. What we are not fond of, however, is the pollution that their inefficient engines create, and so it's great to see our old favorites lovingly up-cycled with electric drivetrains. The ZelectricBug is a beautiful example of how new, cleaner life can be breathed into an old Volkswagen Beetle. Now, we first came across this particular automobile during the Refuel event last summer and we were struck by its cleanly done conversion then. Aside from a few snaps in our gallery, though, we didn't give it the kind of attention it deserves. Fortunately, the good folks over at Roads and Rides have rectified this by turning their pro video camera skills onto the 1963 V-Dub and producing a nice little segment to accompany their write up. Scroll below to see the finished footage and head over to their website for some stills. If all this gives you a hankering for your own Zelectric, the company does have plans to sell to the public starting this summer. If you don't want to wait, EV West, the guys who did the drivetrain work on this car, have conversion kits available for Beetles, as well as a number of other vehicles. Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.
