The Volkwagen Thing was only imported to the United States for 2 years. Only about 25,000 made it here to the States. This example, the Type 181 was the left-hand drive model imported to the USA.

This example showcases custom dark red base/clearcoat paint and is a pleasure to cruise.

The exterior displays the original sheetmetal throughout. These are very unique vehicles. The doors are removable as is the top. Even the windshield folds down in the Thing. Originally, the Thing was only available in three colors, Blizzard White, Pumpkin Orange, or Sunshine Yellow.

The vinyl top on this VW Thing is in very good condition throughout as is the glass and removable window panels.

Not only are the Thing's doors removable front to back, they are interchangeable.

Interestingly enough, Volkswagen's Thing was built on the VW micro-bus pre-68 chassis.

The engine compartment displays the reliable little dual point 1600 c.c. VW engine. This is a strong running little car that shifts through the gears with ease.

 photo DSC04532_zps70873374.jpg

The dual exhaust pipes give this THING a little attitude.

 photo DSC04540_zps48b398b0.jpg

The interior is Spartan at best. The instrumentation is easy to read and simple, a speedometer, odometer, and a fuel gauge. The speedometer DOES NOT work. The 4-speed gearbox shifts through the gears as it should. The black vinyl upholstery is in good condition front to back. The glovebox area in the VW Thing is more of a cubby hole, it never came with an actual door.

The trunk is solid throughout. There is a good sized floor pan rust-thru hole and some rust-thru in the engine compartment photographed.

The original identification plate is intact. This is chassis # 18328408943.

Someone did an amatuer job of dropping some metal in the floors to cover the rust holes.

Underneath this Thing there is rust in the floorpans, surface and one area of pretty extensive rust-through. I showed this rust in detail on the photos above. This is common for all the VWs. Luckily, the pans are fairly in-expensive and appears passenger rear floor pan area is most affected. Enjoy this car as-is or you can inquire about our facilities'  restoration services at Texas Classic Cars of Dallas.

You can find paint flaws when you start looking closely. Note the cracking at the rocker panel in the paint, see above.

The paint finish does show well, but has some minor flaws as all classics do, see the detailed photos above. We do our best to accurately describe our vehicles. Our 100% positive customer feedback reflects the way we do business here at Texas Classic Cars of Dallas.

The 15-inch steel wheels were fitted with 205/75R15 radial tires all around.

Poor headlights cause 40 cars to miss IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

Mon, Aug 6 2018

Over the past few months, we've noticed a number of cars and SUVs that have come incredibly close to earning one of the IIHS's highest accolades, the Top Safety Pick rating. They have great crash test scores and solid automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems. What trips them up is headlights. That got us wondering, how many vehicles are there that are coming up short because they don't have headlights that meet the organization's criteria for an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating. This is a revision made after 2017, a year in which headlights weren't factored in for this specific award. This is also why why some vehicles, such as the Ford F-150, might have had the award last year, but have lost it for this year. We reached out to someone at IIHS to find out. He responded with the following car models. Depending on how you count, a whopping 40 models crash well enough to receive the rating, but don't get it because their headlights are either "Poor" or "Marginal." We say depending on how you count because the IIHS actual counts truck body styles differently, and the Infiniti Q70 is a special case. Apparently the version of the Q70 that has good headlights doesn't have adequate forward collision prevention technology. And the one that has good forward collision tech doesn't have good enough headlights. We've provided the entire list of vehicles below in alphabetical order. Interestingly, it seems the Volkswagen Group is having the most difficulty providing good headlights with its otherwise safe cars. It had the most models on the list at 9 split between Audi and Volkswagen. GM is next in line with 7 models. It is worth noting again that though these vehicles have subpar headlights and don't quite earn Top Safety Pick awards, that doesn't mean they're unsafe. They all score well enough in crash testing and forward collision prevention that they would get the coveted award if the lights were better.

VW planning 20 new plug-in models for China

Thu, Oct 30 2014

With just about everything getting super-sized for China, Volkswagen is following suit with its plug-in vehicle plans for the world's most populous country. VW, Europe's largest carmaker, is looking to sell more than 20 different plug-in models in China within the next four years, Reuters says, citing comments Volkswagen Group China head Jochem Heizmann made in Shanghai. The company is hoping that translates to sales of more than 100,000 plug-ins in China by the end of the decade. Go big or go home, right? There's a huge plug-in vehicle opportunity in China, especially given the bad pollution situation in cities like Beijing and Shanghai and the Chinese government's incentives for plug-in vehicle buyers. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said at the Beijing Motor Show this spring that the company would spend $25 billion on at least a half-dozen plug-in models for China by 2018. VW will start selling the e-Golf in China this year and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid in 2015. VW said in August that it would start selling the e-Golf in the US for about $35,500 in November. That's a $6,500 price hike from the base Nissan Leaf.

VW still set on Phaeton redux despite cost-cutting drive and losing $32k per car

Wed, Jan 28 2015

While critically well regarded, the Volkswagen Phaeton has proven to be a vehicle largely unloved by luxury buyers around the world. Despite this, it refuses to die. While VW's luxury sedan hasn't been sold in the US since 2006 due to low sales here, it has soldiered on in Europe with occasional updates. As the model's long lifespan has been winding down, VW has decided to keep pushing the Phaeton into a new generation, despite in-house alternatives like the Audi A8 and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The move might not make much business sense, but Volkswagen executives are determined to make the Phaeton work. According to market analysts speaking to Reuters, developing the next-gen luxury sedan on the MLB platform could cost as much as 650 million euros ($737 million), despite relying on the same underpinnings in the A8. It's not like the Phaeton is leading the luxury sedan sales ranks, either. Reuters notes VW produced just 5,812 of them in 2013 (the most current year with data), and from 2002 to 2012, the automaker reportedly lost 28,000 euros ($32,000) on each example sold. Conversely, Mercedes-Benz sold 103,737 units of its new S-Class in 2014, an astonishing 82.2 percent jump over the previous year. The decision to keep the Phaeton going doesn't seem to square with the VW brand's cost-cutting strategy. Boss Martin Winterkorn announced last year a plan to save 5 billion euros ($5.7 billion) annually in the coming years. That plan reportedly also includes killing off less profitable models. Apparently, VW can't just rip off the band-aid and get rid of the Phaeton. Even some VW bosses seem somewhat perplexed at the sedan's business case. When Reuters asked the company's US boss Michael Horn about selling the Phaeton here, he said. "That's a dangerous question. It's an image bearer with no relevance for volume." The next-gen Phaeton is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in 2017 or 2018, according to Reuters, which is about a year later than previous rumors. A US launch will reportedly follow in 2018 or 2019 with the plug-in hybrid and potentially even diesel versions on offer. A starting price around $70,000 is estimated.
