BEAUTIFUL VW Rabbit Turbo Diesel.

Car began life as a non-turbo diesel 4 speed.  About 2 years ago, the engine was swapped with a turbo-diesel and 5 speed transmission.  At that time, an intercooler from a Saab was added with custom aluminum piping.  Anyone who knows these little diesels knows they were not big on power.  With the 4 speed transmission, highway cruising speeds (70-75) were not all that comfy - especially when going up a lengthy hill.  But not with this car.  The turbo spools up and away you go - no downshifting necessary.  This is a wonderful setup and the car still retains 40+ mpg.

Other modifications:

Cross bracing for the shock towers
Anti-sway bars
Polyurethane bushings
Adjustable lowering springs on all four corners.  (Currently lowered 1.5" but can be raised easily - tool included)
Techtonics stainless exhaust (sounds awesome)
Saab Intercooler
Recent Bosch Glow plugs
Rebuilt Injector pump
TACHOMETER
Snowflake wheels
R134a Air Conditioning Conversion
Thule Luggage Rack (with every attachment available in the 80's)
Lip spoiler on the front.
Kenwood HD radio tuner
Paint about a year old.
Windshield about a year old.
Removable tow bar.  I've never used it.  I installed it to tow the car to South Florida but changed my mind.  I will remove it if you do not want it.
Vintage Hella Fog lamps

The body was near flawless and ZERO RUST ANYWHERE before the re-paint.  I have before pictures available.  The paint had become "thin" and buffed through to the primer in a few places.  So I had a reputable local shop spray a base coat/clear coat Dupont paint, wet sand and buff to a beautiful finish ($1,700).  It is nicer than original.  This is no Maaco paint job.

Original interior has no rips or tears.  There is one small spot on the carpet in the left rear but other than that the carpet is perfect.  The dash has no cracks.

This has been a Georgia Vehicle its entire life.  I have many of the records from the original owner.  It has been well-maintained and cared for its entire life.

This is really a wonderful car that I would drive anywhere.  I travel between two cities.  This car sits for two weeks at a time in a garage and it starts every time no matter how cold it is.

It would be difficult for you to find a nicer Mk 1 Diesel anywhere.  It really is that nice.

I am only selling it because I cannot tow my boat with it.  I need a tow vehicle in Atlanta.

Your winning bid is a binding contract to buy.  $500 deposit due within 48 hours.  Balance paid on pickup.  Because of my travel, vehicle must be picked up and paid for between Friday February 22nd and Tuesday February 26th.  Please make sure this is acceptable prior to placing a bid.

Georgia does not require titles for vehicles before 1986.  Therefore, this vehicle is sold with a Bill of Sale and a copy of the tag registration in my name.

Check my feedback - bid with confidence.  Please don't wait to the last minute to start asking questions.  You might be too late.

The UK votes for Brexit and it will impact automakers

Fri, Jun 24 2016

It's the first morning after the United Kingdom voted for what's become known as Brexit – that is, to leave the European Union and its tariff-free internal market. Now begins a two-year process in which the UK will have to negotiate with the rest of the EU trading bloc, which is its largest export market, about many things. One of them may be tariffs, and that could severely impact any automaker that builds cars in the UK. This doesn't just mean companies that you think of as British, like Mini and Jaguar. Both of those automakers are owned by foreign companies, incidentally. Mini and Rolls-Royce are owned by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata Motors of India, and Bentley by the VW Group. Many other automakers produce cars in the UK for sale within that country and also export to the EU. Tariffs could damage the profits of each of these companies, and perhaps cause them to shift manufacturing out of the UK, significantly damaging the country's resurgent manufacturing industry. Autonews Europe dug up some interesting numbers on that last point. Nissan, the country's second-largest auto producer, builds 475k or so cars in the UK but the vast majority are sent abroad. Toyota built 190k cars last year in Britain, of which 75 percent went to the EU and just 10 percent were sold in the country. Investors are skittish at the news. The value of the pound sterling has plummeted by 8 percent as of this writing, at one point yesterday reaching levels not seen since 1985. Shares at Tata Motors, which counts Jaguar and Land Rover as bright jewels in its portfolio, were off by nearly 12 percent according to Autonews Europe. So what happens next? No one's terribly sure, although the feeling seems to be that the jilted EU will impost tariffs of up to 10 percent on UK exports. It's likely that the UK will reciprocate, and thus it'll be more expensive to buy a European-made car in the UK. Both situations will likely negatively affect the country, as both production of new cars and sales to UK consumers will both fall. Evercore Automotive Research figures the combined damage will be roughly $9b in lost profits to automakers, and an as-of-yet unquantified impact on auto production jobs. Perhaps the EU's leaders in Brussels will be in a better mood in two years, and the process won't devolve into a trade war. In the immediate wake of the Brexit vote, though, the mood is grim, the EU leadership is angry, and investors are spooked.

2022 Genesis GV70, raging at VW ID.4 tech and thoughts on a new Lexus LFA | Autoblog Podcast #696

Fri, Sep 17 2021

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Senior Editor James Riswick. This week, they talk about driving the Genesis GV70, VW ID.4 and VW Taos. They talk about ways Chevy could "fix" the Camaro. James ranked all the James Bond films based solely on their starring cars. Next, they reach in the mailbag and discuss the question, "Do you think Lexus will make a successor to the LFA and, if so, what do you guys think it would be like?" After ruminating on that query, they dip into the mailbag a second time to recommend a sporty crossover to a listener in this week's Spend My Money segment. VW to unveil diesel-electric Twin-Up! in Tokyo

Fri, 08 Nov 2013

We've received multiple reports that Volkswagen will be bringing a diesel-electric concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, set to take place later this month. The car, called the Twin-Up!, is based on the Up! city car, with some sources claiming this is a thinly veiled concept that will eventually enter production.
According to Automotive News Europe, the Twin-Up! will reportedly return 214 miles per gallon on the US cycle by combining an 800-cc, two-cylinder diesel and an electric motor. It will also boast plug-in capabilities, and will be able to cover 30 miles on electric power alone.
Autocar has a more complete picture of the Twin-Up!'s powertrain, though, claiming it's a modified version of the hybrid system found in the Volkswagen XL1. The Twin-Up! will get a more potent, 47-horsepower electric motor to the XL1's 27-hp unit, but will retain that car's 47-hp turbodiesel. The battery pack will also grow, from 5.5 kilowatt hours to 8.6 kWh. Both of these increases are necessary due to the increased weight of the Twin-Up! - it's some 900 pounds heavier than an XL1.
