Wolfsburg, Germany - Len Hunt, the ebullient head of Volkswagen in North America, says that the new Passat is the first car to show the company's future direction in the United States. "VW is affordable German engineering, fun to drive, and distinctive European styling," he says. With VW's sales tanking in the first six months of the year, the Passat and the Jetta have to succeed. The new Jetta is a good car, but it suffers from bland styling and was introduced with its least appealing powertrain-a mistake that VW won't repeat, says Hunt, now that Wolfgang Bernhard is VW's product supremo. VW already has introduced the Passat in 2.0T form with a base price of $23,565, while the 3.6L goes on sale this month at $30,565. We went to Germany to drive the 3.6, which uses a VR6 engine that has a narrow 10.6-degree included angle and cylinder banks staggered relative to each other. The engine makes 280 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, which would put the front tires under duress without the standard stability control system. The VR6 is mated to a six-speed manu-matic transmission, driving either the front or all four wheels. The new Passat is an imposing car that's bigger inside and out than the outgoing version. It's three inches longer and three inches wider and has 2.4 inches additional rear legroom. It isn't quite as beautifully wrought inside as the old car, because there is hard plastic evidence of cost-cutting measures. Still, the fit and finish are in line with the best Japanese makers and more attractively designed to boot. The 3.6L V6 comes well equipped, with front, side, and side curtain air bags, stability control, and active front headrests as standard. A luxury package adds leather,dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats; a sport package offers sport seats, steering-wheel shift buttons, and a lowered and stiffened suspension. Stand-alone options include a navigation system.  On the road, the engine sounds great and produces enough power for a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 6.6 seconds. The car feels much more coherent than the old one, with a very stiff structure, excellent steering, and fully house-trained front-wheel-drive manners. On the optional eighteen-inch wheels and tires, the ride is stiff over expansion joints, but the trade-off is well-controlled body motions. The Passat 3.6L V6 is really fine, although it's admirable rather than exciting to drive. And while a well-equipped car undercuts an Audi A6 3.2, it is quite pricey compared with sportier Japanese cars such as the Acura TL and the Infiniti G35. Then again, the V-6 model is expected to account for just 25 percent of Passat sales, and on this evidence, it looks more like a bargain luxury car than an expensive family sedan.

2020 Virtual Geneva Motor Show Editors' Picks

Fri, Mar 6 2020

There may not have been an actual Geneva Motor Show this year, but there were still loads of car reveals that happened the week that the show would have happened. So we still wanted to highlight what our favorites of the would-be show. Our list of cars seemed to match the theme of the reveals, too, highlighting over-the-top supercars and forward thinking electric vehicles. Scroll down to see our favorites. Fifth Place: Aston Martin V12 Speedster - 21 points Managing Editor, Greg Rasa: Astons are works of art, and this one's ready for the Louvre. The design nods to Aston history are nifty. It looks like a jet fighter, except those have canopies. Not sure what 186 mph would be like in this, but don't try it in summer when there are bugs. Contributing Editor, Joe Lorio: Admittedly, this one is a little silly. A $950,000 sports car with no roof? A 700-hp two-seater with no windshield? But the offerings at the Geneva auto show have always tilted toward absurdity, and Aston’s V12 Speedster is endearingly outrageous as a fighter plane for the street. Third Place (Tie): Volkswagen ID.4 - 26 points Senior Producer, Chris McGraw: I don't have much to say about this other than I am a huge fan of more EVs coming to the market, which is why two-thirds of my picks are electric, including the ID.4. Producer, Alex Malberg: Any new fully-electric crossover is a vote for me. The fact it doesn't look terrible and VW will be including AWD later are bonuses.  Third Place (Tie): Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio GTA - 26 points Road Test Editor, Zac Palmer: Hard to argue with the logic of this one. The Giulia Quadrifoglio is already the best driver in this class of hot sedans, so why not extend the lead with a special model. That wing is Type R levels of high, and I completely approve. Associate Editor, Byron Hurd: Love this car. Love it, love it, love it. It's beautiful, aggressive and fast. I'd take it over an M3 or C63 any day. As cool as the GTAm is, though, I'd rather stick to the four-seat GTA. Something about a four-door car with two seats just doesn't really work for me. I haven't alienated ALL of my friends quite yet. Second Place: Hyundai Prophecy - 35 points Senior Editor, Green, John Snyder: I get whiffs of the Genesis Coupe from this sleek concept. I like the focus on form, with interesting details to discover if you look for them. West Coast Editor, James Riswick: Does it look like a Porsche? Sure, but Porsches look neat.

VW Group plan puts Porsche in charge of a 'super-premium' division

Tue, Sep 11 2018

An Automobile report looks into what's happening on the organizational and technical sides of the Volkswagen Group, and what those changes could mean for the premium brands. The wide-angle view is that Porsche appears to have been anointed to "coordinate the future activities" at Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Audi would cede Lamborghini guardianship to Stuttgart, and Ducati — via a new concern called Ducati Enterprises — would become the shepherd for VW's other Italian investments. Executives target Jan. 1, 2019, to complete the reshuffle. VW wants to save a boodle by tying up four of its five top-tier brands, and putting the one with the highest ROI in charge. Porsche, within its own house, wants to reduce expenditures by $2.3 billion per year over for four years, the savings already earmarked for improving internal processes like R&D and production. Having Porsche share those gains as well as lead development of platforms, components and future-tech strategies for the sister sports car brands could benefit everyone. In the near-term, the brands have their own plans: Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann is said to want a Chiron Superleggera, a roofless and "completely reskinned" Chiron Aperta, and a track-only Chiron SS. The Superleggera could take the Chiron Sport's and Divo's Jenny Craig routines even further. The Aperta seems a natural successor to the Veyron Grand Sport, a natural evolution of the recently introduced Sky View roof, and a reskin might include numerous Divo cues. It's also said Bugatti's considering "an all-electric high-end model" in conjunction with Porsche, Rimac, and Dallara, but name one supercar or hypercar manufacturer that isn't considering a lightning-fast EV. Lamborghini, deep into work on follow-ups for the Huracan and Aventador, might get a bit of a bump with the new plan. The carbon "monofuselage" for the next V12 flagship is said to be too far developed and too complex to scrap. It puts two electric motors on the front axle, batteries in the middle, and a naturally aspirated V12 with around 770 horsepower plus another e-motor with 402 horsepower in back. The Huracan is said to get a version of the same carbon architecture at the moment, but the corporate reorganization might press pause on it. Automobile says options include continuing the Huracan/ Audi R8 twinning, but that depends on Audi saying "Ja" to a third-gen R8 with Lamborghini bones.

VW quite interested in solid-state batteries for EVs

Tue, Mar 24 2015

Volkswagen is about to make a decision about which advanced battery technology the automaker will seriously investigate to give its electric vehicles more range. VW will decide by July if it will use solid-state batteries made by US-based QuantumScape Corp. in future EVs, according to Bloomberg News. Last year, VW bought a five-percent stake in QuantumScape, which was founded by ex-Stanford University researchers. The lure is that QuantumScape's solid-state batteries may provide a single-charge range of as long as 430 miles. That's more than three times the current range of the VW e-Golf electric vehicle the company recently started selling to the public and is substantially longer than the single-charge range of the Tesla Model S electric sedan. The batteries are also fireproof, making VW's potential decision one with an eye towards more vehicle safety. Solid-state battery technology, in which solid lithium electrodes are used instead of liquid electrodes such as those in lithium-ion batteries, are the subject of research at other automakers and suppliers as well. Toyota says they could be here by 2020. Recently, the cordless vacuum cleaner maker Dyson acquired a $15-million equity stake in Michigan-based battery maker Sakti3 with the idea of using the startup's solid-state batteries in its products. General Motors also has a minority stake in Sakti3, which was spun off from the University of Michigan.
