This 2005 Volkswagen Passat was purchased from a previous owner on eBay on 8/18/2006 with 16,200 miles on it; not even broken-in yet. It has since been used as a commuter car by my non-smoking wife to attend classes at universities in Indiana and Pennsylvania. The car is clean both inside and out, with minimal wear and tear owing to normal use. The leather interior is clean and without defect, except for two small tears in the driver door panel, the result of a smash-and-dash purse robbery that shattered the driver side window. The windows are tinted an amber shade, and match the car nicely. A small rectangle of tinting has been removed from the right lower rear window to accommodate a parking sticker, and I have left the parking sticker in place so that no explanation is needed as to why a small rectangle of tinting is missing. Added options from the previous owner are mudflaps and side window guards. The Monsoon Sound system works perfectly, and includes a 6 disc CD changer located behind a side panel in the left cargo area. An auxiliary audio input is available via the cassette tape function, and is included with the car. All maintenance, both routine and repair, is well-documented, performed by certified mechanics to OEM specs, and will be supplied with the vehicle. Additionally, an excel file containing the maintenance, fuel data, purchase price and mileage history is available via email for those who wish to review that information prior to bidding. Feel free to request it. The timing belt was replaced at 106,000 miles, along with the associated rollers, tensioners and water pump. The 16-inch tires are still in good shape, with about 50% tread left. All of the features and equipment are in working condition, including bulbs, fans, etc. The 5-speed Automatic Tiptronic transmission works perfectly. The pictures associated with this ad depict all of the previously-listed defects and should be self-explanatory. The car will comfortably seat 4 people, and 5 is not that much of a squeeze. It is both heavier and larger than the Jetta wagon, with a smoother, quieter ride. As a result, it is not quite as good with fuel mileage as the Jetta. The MPGs are very good on the interstate, however. Overall, the average MPG achieved with this car during the period of ownership was 34 MPG, info extracted from the excel file. The owner's manual, two remote access keys, a valet key, all service records, the original build sheet, a new air filter and two new oil filters are included with the car. To reiterate the car's defects: There is a small area of rust developing in the wheel well of the front left fender; both plastic headlight covers are clouded and show some oxidation; the antenna roof gasket is cracked and has been repaired with clear silicone; the removable plastic trim that normally covers the indentation for the jacking point is missing from the right side; the alloy wheels are curb-scuffed, particularly on the right side, and one wheel is missing the center VW emblem; there are two small tears in the leather driver door panel; both right and left leading edge bumpers have been scuffed. There is a pictorial representation of these defects.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, please ask.

VW recalls another 6,700 vehicles over fuel leak [UPDATE]

Mon, Feb 2 2015

UPDATE: An earlier version of this post suggested that the expanded recall involved an additional 44,658 units, when VW tells us that is in fact the total number - adding a further 6,679 to the original recall of 37,979. The text below has been updated accordingly, with our apologies for the confusion. It was a little over a month ago that Volkswagen issued a recall for some 38,000 vehicles over a potential fuel leak. Now the German automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have expanded that recall, affecting even more vehicles for the same issue. The problem revolves around a sealing cap at the fuel rail, which could fail and cause fuel to leak into the engine compartment, thereby increasing the risk of a fire. This time around, VW is calling in a selection of Jettas, Passats, Golfs, GTIs, Beetles and Beetle Convertibles, all of them from the 2014 and 2015 model years (except the Golf and GTI, of which only 2015 models are being recalled). The recall now affects an estimated additional 6,679 units, which (in addition to the 37,979 recalled previously) brings the total up to 44,658 vehicles across the United States. RECALL Subject : Fuel Leaking Into Engine Compartment Report Receipt Date: JAN 23, 2015 NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V028000 Component(s): FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Potential Number of Units Affected: 44,658 Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jetta vehicles manufactured March 28, 2014, to November 24, 2014, 2014-2015 Passat vehicles manufactured April 7, 2014, to November 18, 2014, 2015 Golf and GTI vehicles manufactured July 1, 2014, to November 20, 2014, and 2014-2015 Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles manufactured March 31, 2014, to November 27, 2014. A sealing cap at the fuel rail may fail, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. CONSEQUENCE: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, can result in a vehicle fire. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails with new parts, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early February 2015. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24BL. Note: This recall expands and supersedes recall 14V-809 (Volkswagen recall number 24Bi) and only affects vehicles not previously repaired under that campaign.

VW delivers first XL1 in Germany

Mon, Jun 9 2014

Volkswagen has delivered the first XL1 diesel plug-in hybrid to a customer from Berlin, Germany. Dr. Christian Malorny received his Oryx White XL1 with black and grey interior from Volkswagen Germany's director of sales and marketing for passenger cars, Thomas Zahn, at the company's Transparent Factory in Dresden. The super-efficient XL1, which first debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, is powered by a 0.8-liter, two-cylinder TDI engine and electric motor, with electricity supplied by a 5.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission. With a curb weight of 1,753 pounds and a drag coefficient of just 0.189, the XL1 is rated at 261 miles per gallon on the lenient European cycle. It is capable of traveling solely on electric power for up to 31 miles. "The XL1 has inspired me from the beginning and I am very pleased to now be driving my own," said Malorny, (translated). "With its visionary design and high-tech appearance, Volkswagen has dared something new and innovative." The futuristic XL1 seats two passengers, and can carry 4.2 cubic feet of cargo. It features a carbon fiber reinforced plastic body, and a low center of gravity. It is diminutive of stature, as you can see in the photo, measuring 153.1 inches long, 65.6 inches wide, and just 45.4 inches tall. It is being billed as the world's most efficient production car, but it's unlikely Dr. Malorny will be making his money back on fuel savings any time soon; despite the first sale and the vehicles appearing on the German VW site, Volkswagen has not officially announced the price tag for the XL1. In the past, we've heard it will cost approximately $145,000. Only 250 are being produced. Check out our drive review of the Volkswagen XL1 here or read on for more information in the Google-translated press release, below. A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.
