2005 - Volkswagen Passat on 2040-cars
Brunswick, Georgia, United States

Mine is a outstanding example of the rare and very desirable 2005 VW Passat GLS TDI Wagon. Anyone who is familiar with this car, or has researched it, knows that it has all the advantages of a sleek wagon - power, speed, comfort, passenger and cargo roominess - combined with the stability and reliability of a truck. It easily gets 38 miles to the gallon on the HWY and sometimes as much as 45-48 MPGs. 100,000 miles on this car is the beginning of its capacity if its looked after well, as this has been. This car has has been attended to throughout its life, with exacting service, immediate repairs to any worn out parts, and all the correct fuels and synthetic oils. It has never been in any kind of accident or fence bender; tires have been rotated and changed regularly. The car has been driven regularly, occasionally on a long road trip, where it has always excelled. It's a diesel, so it idles slightly noisily with a small vibration that is entirely normal for this vehicle. Once you get the RPMs up and begin cruising the engine settles into a low and quiet hum. Because of the high torque to HP ratio, the car gives plenty of power, even fully loaded going uphill at speed. This is the kind of car that inspires real car love, with admiration for the craft of engineering and the pedigree of a brand like VW. Not all VWs are created equal, of course. Some that are made in Mexico or the US are inferior to German made VWs when it comes to reliability and longevity. This Passat TDI is a completely German made vehicle, on a rock solid chassis, with an engine the Germans have perfected. My car is the top of the line version of what I consider the best body style in history for Passat Wagons. I bought it in 2007 with approx. 18,000 miles on it. I live in California where they were never sold, and after researching widely, I bought my car at above market price - $32K- from a specialist in Texas, flew to pick it up, had it fully checked out and cleared at the main VW dealer In Lubbock, and then drove it home to Los Angeles. They only sold this car in the US in 2004 and 2005 so they are hard to find, especially in good condition. I am selling because I recently bought a 2014 Subaru Outback for my family, and don't have room or desire to park both. I give this VW up reluctantly. So what will you see if you're looking at my car. It's in very good condition. On the exterior, it has the very nice VW factory applied double thin white line on both sides to accent the gray metallic paint, with factory standard silver metal door protectors, wing mirror blinkers, daytime running lights and fog lamps, automatic moonroof, and mast antenna. There are 3-4 minor scratches (cosmetic and not easily visible), but they are real enough that I have not attempted to buff them out. To get rid of them would require re-painting properly and it is unnecessary. The front and rear bumpers had enough scuffs and bumps from LA drivers parking a little too carelessly that I went ahead and had both bumpers re-painted expertly, with the correct factory paint so that a buyer gets a nice looking clean start. They are perfect. The engine has been fully serviced in December 2013, has been driven only a few miles since then, and is ready to go in excellent condition. Front and rear all season tires are practically new. There is a spare in the rear. Front and rear 17" alloy wheels complete the exterior package. Two of the wheels have some minor scratches on them, again cosmetic. In the interior, you will see the fully optioned GLS package with the leather and wood grain package. This includes heated seats, heated washer, dark gray leather seat upholstery with additional vinyl; Leather covered multi-function steering wheel; Remote audio controls; Luxury trim wood/woodgrain on gear knob, wood/woodgrain on doors and wood/woodgrain on dashboard; Leather hand brake grip. The car has an in-dash CD and cassette player with the optional 8-speaker Monsoon stereo. The car is set up for a 6-CD loader option in the rear compartment but I never installed the option. 12V outlets are in front, passenger and cargo compartments. In summary, this is a car that dealers and even casual motor enthusiasts always get excited about. All the service guys at our VW dealer in Santa Monica love this car. They call it 'the tank', because it is super solid, heavy metal throughout, built old style German with none of the fragile plastics used in the new VWs. This model inspires admiration from anyone who knows about cars. We are frequently approached and asked about the car or given the thumbs up by passersby who know, so be prepared to chat with the occasional enthusiastic stranger. Please bid within your comfort zone. I would like a clean transaction and a good new home for a car that has been nothing but outstanding. Editors' Picks August 2021 | Honda Civic, Mercedes S-Class and more
Thu, Sep 9 2021This month of Editors' Picks saw us award the honor to a couple of redesigned stalwarts like the Honda Civic and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Plus, a new crossover that splits the difference between the compact and subcompact class takes home the prize. On top of this, we'll introduce you to a new term: midcompact. We'll be using this to describe those in-between crossovers that are a tad too small to be considered compact, but too large to neatly fit into the subcompact class. For a few examples of these "midcompact" cars, we'll point you to the Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos and VW Seltos. In case you missed our previous Editors' Picks posts, here’s a quick refresher on whatÂ’s going on here. We rate all the new cars we drive with a 1-10 score. Cars that are exemplary in their respective segments get EditorsÂ’ Pick status. Those are the ones weÂ’d recommend to our friends, family and anybody whoÂ’s curious and asks the question. The list that youÂ’ll find below consists of every car we rated in August that earned an EditorsÂ’ Pick. 2021 Genesis G70 2022 Genesis G70 View 26 Photos Quick take: Genesis hits all the right buttons with its G70. It's attractive, fun to drive and can be had for a fair price. Enthusiasts should give it a shot before taking home one of its German competitors. Score: 8 What it competes with: Alfa Romeo Giulia, Lexus IS, Acura TLX, Infiniti Q50, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Cadillac CT4, Volvo S60 Pros: Sharp handler, stunning exterior looks, strong engines Cons: Average interior, loses manual option, small backseat and trunk From the editors: News Editor Joel Stocksdale — "I was already a big fan of the Genesis G70. It has brilliant handling, and the twin-turbo V6 is a beast. It's even a bargain against the competition. And Genesis just made it look a lot better. I wish they'd done a bit more to update the interior, but it's still not a bad cabin. Besides, you won't think too much about it when you're hustling down a fun back road." Features Editor James Riswick — "Yes, it is small, but in a sport sedan segment where "sport" means increasingly less, the G70 still delivers (in part because of that smallness).

Only VW, Volvo are doing enough to electrify in Europe, study says
Wed, Jun 16 2021Among major carmakers, Volkswagen and Volvo are doing enough to electrify their vehicle lineups in Europe, and the EU needs to set tougher CO2 emission limits if it wants to meet Green Deal targets, according to a climate group's study. Sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids almost tripled last year, boosted by tighter emission standards and government subsidies. This summer, the European Union is expected to announce more ambitious CO2 targets; by 2030, the average CO2 emissions of new cars should be 50% below 2021 levels, versus the existing target of 37.5%. Volkswagen aims to have 55% group-wide BEV sales in Europe by 2030, while Swedish carmaker Volvo, owned by China's Geely says its lineup will be fully electric by then. VW ID4 front three quarter dark View 19 Photos Based on IHS Markit car production forecasts, according to the study from European campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E), Volkswagen and Volvo have "aggressive and credible strategies" to shift from fossil-fuel cars to electric vehicles. Others like Ford Motor Co have set ambitious targets, "but lack a robust plan to get there," T&E said. Ford plans an all-electric lineup in Europe by 2030. T&E said BMW, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Daimler AG and Toyota rank the worst as they have low BEV sales, have "no ambitious phase-out targets, no clear industrial strategy, and an over-reliance in the case of BMW, Daimler and Toyota on hybrids." JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, says its luxury Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025, but has been less specific about electrification of its higher-volume Land Rover brand. BMW and Daimler have been reluctant to set hard deadlines for phasing out fossil-fuel cars. T&E said even if carmakers meet their targets, in 2030 BEV sales could be 10 percentage points below those needed to meet the EU's Green Deal — which targets net zero emissions by 2050. Rather than a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, based on carmakers' existing production plans, the EU could set more ambitious targets, T&E said - an up to 35% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2025, around 50% by 2027 and up to 70% in 2030. "Targets need to be gradually tightened so that carmakers not only commit to phasing out fossil fuels, but develop a strategy that gets them there on time," Julia Poliscanova, T&E senior director for vehicles and e-mobility, said in a statement.
