2002 Volkswagen Passat W8 4motion

RARE, beautiful, classy 4 door luxury sports sedan with all wheel drive and 8 cylinder power.

This one owner car was purchased from Speedway Motors in Victoria, BC, Canada in 2006. The dealership owned the car before this and so we are the first registered owners. Up until 2011 the car was under VW extended warranty, but we have had no major service issues at all.

This is a rare sports sedan that my wife and I have enjoyed immensely. It is black on black, in absolutely excellent condition, especially the interior which you can see shows how well it has been cared for. There are no cracks in the leather as I treated and conditioned the leather seats every year. The headliner is also in great shape, and all the little bits and pieces are original and accounted for. Most importantly, the car SMELLS new, no musty odors or “used car smells”. We never smoked in it or carried and furry creatures. There are no stains on the carpet. I am a car nut and appreciate rare cars that tell a unique story. This one certainly fits that category, with its W8 engine architecture shared with the Bentley Continental, VW Phaeton and Bugatti Veyron.

This car is 1 of 97 Passat W8 imported into Canada in 2002, and 1 of 10 that were black on black!

I took a few photos underneath the car so you can see how clean it is. Also, I took some side photos of the car so you can see there are absolutely no dents whatsoever along the sides of the car. There are some scuffs on the bumpers from people in parking lots, etc.

If I were less busy, I would have waxed and polished the car and detailed under the hood, but I haven’t. You can see still how clean it is, nothing is hidden like some dealerships who coat everything with Armor All so you have no idea how dirty their car was for most of its life.

This is such a safe car, all 3900 lbs of it, with extra cross members and steel reinforcements as part of the W8 revamp by VW. I believe it was the first VW to get Brake Assist along with the full complement of traction and stability control features.

It is a W8 engine, 270 hp, and smooth and powerful with the most beautiful and unique exhaust note you’ll ever hear. The cabin is whisper quiet and the ride is very refined. Built-in Germany, this particular Passat has every option available from the regular Passat, plus the following W8 specific features (too many to list):

-       32V, quad cam, 8 cylinder engine with variable valve timing

-       4motion AWD

-       Bi-Xenon auto-levelling headlights (replaced both bulbs last year with new ones)

-       Quad (!) exhaust

-       Distinct W8 badging, taillights

-       Unique gauges with 300km/h speedometer

-       Unique W8 specific upgraded brakes (4 piston calipers front, vented rotors rear), wheels, tires, suspension, etc

-       Upgraded frame structure

-       Larger fuel tank

-       5 speed Tiptronic automatic with DSP (dynamic shift program)

All major servicing has been done, and a few weeks ago we replaced the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley just because it looked like it needed it ($1200).

We kept everything bone stock, except for getting some upgraded 17” VW wheels and performance rubber (General Exclaim UHP in 215/50R17 95W XL load rated tires). You’ll notice there are wheel locks on each wheel.

This car has a lot of unique features, including:

-       Dual heated and power folding mirrors

-       VW traction and stability control (ESP), with EBD (electronic brake force distribution), EDL (electronic differential lock) and Brake Assist

-       Power fuel door release, power trunk

-       Air conditioned glove box

-       Illuminated steering wheel buttons (with a switch to turn the lighting off)

-       3 power outlets (2 cabin, 1 trunk)

-       Rear sunshade

-       Ski pass thru

-       6 airbags

-       Electrochromic auto dimming rearview mirror

-       Power drivers seat with 3 memory functions

-       Power passenger seat

-       Hinged, folding hooks in trunk for tie downs

-       Burled walnut trim on dash, doors, center console

And the following features:

-       fog lights

-       8 speaker “Monsoon” AM/FM/CD/Cassette with prewiring for 6-disc changer in trunk and satellite tweeters in the front doors

-       Heated seats

-       Auto climate control with outside temperature gauge

-       Power sunroof

-       Map lights at each seating position

-       Full carpet floor mats

-       Cruise control

-       Trip computer with MPG and trip timer

-       Keyless entry, full central locking

What else can I tell you…everything works well except the driver’s side heated seat. In the photos you’ll see the front right rim was curbed. The repair center did this last week and I was so upset! They agreed to send the rim off for repair so I expect it back in the next week or so.

Brakes were new last summer (all rotors and pads), and the car has had Mobil-1 synthetic since day one.

The transmission is perfect and shifts just like new. Never rebuilt or repaired. The engine purrs and is just absolutely as new. The exhaust is original and has no rattles or rust. The parking brake is firm and pulls up in a tight arc – it has never been adjusted because it has never needed it!

It is reasonable to expect about 18.5mpg city and anywhere from 23-30 mpg highway. The tank is large (80L) and this provides for a highway cruising range of up to 800 km! Yes, it’s an 8 cylinder but I have lots of friends with their V6 SUVs who get far worse mileage and who have no hope of keeping up with this Passat in the curves or on the straights.

We have all service records, mainly the car was serviced at Clarkdale Motors on Main Street in Vancouver but occasionally Regency VW (formerly Westminster VW) in Port Moody.

My preference is for a local pickup, but for the right buyer, will ship it.

Skoda plans big investment into electric cars as part of rebound effort

Wed, Mar 24 2021

PRAGUE — Czech carmaker Skoda, part of the Volkswagen Group, said on Wednesday it would invest around 2.5 billion euros over the next five years on future technologies, with more than half going to electric vehicle investment. The Czech Republic's largest exporter is hoping for a rebound in 2021 from a global car sales drop but faces uncertainty over the coronavirus pandemic and a semiconductor shortage rattling the industry. "This year is likely to be another big challenge," finance director Klaus-Dieter Schuermann said. "We expect Skoda Auto's group performance to improve, with sales revenue significantly above the level of last year." Skoda reported on Wednesday a 54.5% drop in 2020 operating to 756 million euros ($894 million). Sales revenue dropped 13.8% to 17.1 billion euros. Global deliveries remained above 1 million cars for a seventh straight year despite a 19% drop after production outages at the outset of the pandemic and a fall in China, its biggest single market. Chief Executive Thomas Shaefer said the car company was managing the semiconductor shortage "but it will follow us for awhile" and the impact was not visible yet. Skoda's core market in Europe would be electric in the future, Shaefer said, although it was still not time to completely switch away from traditional models, which include the launch last year of a new generation of its flagship Octavia model. It has also started production of the all-electric Enyaq iV model, which is a version of Volkswagen's ID.4. Skoda plans investments of 1.4 billion euros into electromobility development as part of its five-year investment plan. Investments will also go into digitalization activities and plant modernization. Related video: Green Volkswagen Skoda Electric

The hottest modern sports cars rendered as rally racers

Thu, Jan 14 2016

The modern-day World Rally Championship a monumental amount of fun to watch – I should know, as I recently was lucky enough to head to the UK to watch WRC Wales Rally GB – but even the most monstrous of the current WRC cars are based on fairly pedestrian European hatchbacks. Back in the heyday of rally, the Group B era in the 1980s, much hotter cars were the basis of even more incredible competition machines, for the most part. Take the exotic Ford RS200, or the Lancia Delta S4 with its twin-charged engine. And the hatchback-based Group B cars were bonkers, too. So what would some of our favorite modern cars look like if Group B had never ended? A British site named CarWow hired an artist to reimagine everything from the Rolls-Royce Wraith to the Porsche 911 as a retro-inspired rally car, and they were kind enough to let us share the results in the gallery above. The gallery features an Alfa Romeo Giulia in Martini livery, an Audi TT in classic Ur-Quattro colors, a Fiat 500 Abarth sporting massive flares and a hood blister full of auxiliary lights, a new Ford Mustang in RS200 livery, a Lancia Delta in Alitalia colors, a Porsche 911 in Rothmans livery, a Renault-Alpine in classic blue, a Rolls-Royce Wraith tribute to the Jules cologne Corniche Coupe, and a relatively modern-looking VW Touran. So far, the favorite around the office is the incredible Mercedes-Benz S-Class that is an homage to the wonderful 300 SEL 6.8 AMG "Red Pig" that essentially put AMG on the map. Check out the gallery above and see which one you like the best. Related Video:

Volkswagen looking to acquire Proton, Lotus?

Thu, 26 Jul 2012

Let's say you're an automaker bent on world domination looking to grow your sales. That's going to have you looking at Asian markets, because that's where some of the biggest growth has been, and that's exactly what Volkswagen is doing as it considers making another run at Malaysia's Proton.
Reuters reports that Volkswagen is interested in at least a partial stake, if not a controlling interest in Lotus-parent Proton as a way to continue a production presence in the region without having to build its own factory.
Volkswagen already builds the Passat in a DRB-HICOM facility in Pekan, Malaysia, and plans are in place to build the Jetta and Polo there, as well. With both southeast Asia and its relationship with Proton figuring so importantly in Volkswagen's plans for expansion, buying into Proton can help ensure stability. Volkswagen is being tight-lipped about the whole idea, but CEO Martin Winterkorn did recently say, "it's our clear goal to continue the successful (expansion) course of past years with great dynamics and stability," which sounds an awful lot like deals are on the table to smooth the path to further growth.
