Basic info: 1999 Volkswagen Passat GLS 4-door sedan in very good condition. Relatively low mileage of 106,600 miles, 1.8L 4-cylinder turbo engine, 5-speed manual transmission, black exterior, powered sunroof, alloy wheels, dark-gray cloth interior. Front-wheel-drive, ABS, dual airbags, A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control.  Great mileage: 21-24mpg city, 31-34mpg highway (yep, higher than rated at 65-70mph).

Condition: No accidents in this car's history, and I have most maintenance records available.  Exterior has a few small dings of quarter-inch or less, otherwise clean and new-looking.  Interior is very clean: no smoking, no food, no drink spills in car, ever – so no smells. Some nicks on front inner door handles, and some sun bleaching at the back window tail-light, but still looks fine.  Two small night-lights for the center panel vents have gone dark, but they're not essential, and everything else electronic and mechanical works.  Absolutely ready to drive.

Maintenance: scheduled maintenance closely followed, oil changed very regularly and early (every 4k miles instead of 5k); Auto-RX engine cleaner has been used pro-actively. Timing belt and water pump were replaced at 77,000 miles.  Tires are a little over 2 years old, Hankook Optimo H727, and have about 20,000 miles on them.  This Passat has only been fed premium fuel all its life.  It's been taken care of by one very skilled local mechanic for many years, who always checked over the car with every visit.

History: Car was assembled in VW's Germany factory.  I've been the only owner and driver of this car, and intended to keep it for at least another 100k miles, but am leaving the region and giving it up.  It's served me well for many years, and is a worthy example of German engineering – everything feels solid, and driving it is still a pleasure.  The car has always been driven gently: never red-lined the engine, and light touch on the brakes.  Clean title, of course.  VIN ready to check w/ CARFAX as you'd like.

I may end the auction early if necessary.  Any questions, please contact me.  Happy and safe motoring!

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.

2015 VW Golf R caught getting a flogging on 'Ring

Wed, 22 May 2013

The upcoming version of the Volkswagen Golf R is nearly ready for prime time, if this video of the car flying around the Nürburgring is any indication. The all-wheel-drive R seems to make quick, neat work of the corners we see here, and sounds pretty devilish in the process.
Expectations are that the new Golf R will run a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (what else?), tuned to produce even more than the current car's 256 horsepower. (Some sources have indicated outputs as high as 286 horsepower, with 280 pound-feet of torque. It's still not clear if Volkswagen will bring the six-speed dual-clutch transmission to the US-spec Golf R in this next go-round or if we'll stick to having only... eh... the stick.
In either case - watching the video below will only whet your appetite for the new, highest performing member of the Golf family.

VW exec calls US ops a 'disaster'

Thu, 23 Jan 2014

Today in the Tell Us How You Really Feel file we have Bernd Osterloh, head of Volkswagen AG's Group Works Councils and member of the company's supervisory board, labeling the company's US operations "a disaster." Why? Because Osterloh believes VW of America doesn't have the models it needs to be competitive here, hasn't been decisive enough about its plans and German higher-ups still don't understand the US market.
In truth, the top labor rep at the German conglomerate is echoing sentiments we've heard from VWoA executives for years, and there's been the same commentary from dealers: Germany doesn't pay enough attention to what the US market really wants. Even ex-VWoA CEO Stefan Jacoby, who preceded the recently departed Jonathan Browning, said early in his tenure that one of his tasks was to get his German bosses to start delivering what the US market demanded. New CEO Michael Horn is saying much the same thing seven years later, telling Sky News that it has to increase "the speed at which we bring new models to the market and innovation to the market."
Osterloh wants to get "more models" here, including a pickup truck, but we'd wonder if the economics have changed from when Jacoby said they'd need to sell 100,000 per year to make money. Osterloh also wants a decision on where the CrossBlue will be built. Although it looked as if the Chatanooga, TN plant would get the call, the Puebla, Mexico plant is still in the running because of lower operating costs. No matter what happens right now, Osterloh thinks the situation won't get better for another two years when revamped models arrive, but at least the company can start taking the steps for a better US future.
