1996 Volkswagen Passat Tdi Wagon on 2040-cars
Bellingham, Washington, United States
Passat B4V-TDI #744, Wolfsburg Edition
1996 VW Passat B4V-TDI Wagon #744.
This is one of the original 980 B4V-TDI wagons sold in the US in 1996.
It is one of the remaining 622 still registered in the US. This Passat B4V #744 was built 7-12-96 at the Audi assembly plant in Emden, Germany. It
was shipped to a VW dealer in Boulder, Colorado and sold new on 8-6-96. The
original owner lived in Colorado until 2006 when he moved to Oregon.
The Wagon was in Oregon until 2012 when it was purchased by NICECARS.
This B4V Wagon has always been a western car, important in that it was
not subjected to the salty winter roads of the Northeast section of the
US. Western/Southern cars are the best. This wagon gets 50 MPG
using pump diesel on the highway. We found no
evidence this B4V-TDI Wagon had any accidents (history report shows NO
accidents) and we are convinced it had original paint when it arrived at
NICECARS. The original paint on the roof and the
hood were dull so it underwent a full repaint, base/coat clear/coat with PPG
paint. The clear was color-sanded and buffed/polished to a high shine.
It was painted the original "Emerald Green Pearl Metallic, LC6P/W7. The
mechanical upgrades include new air filter, new fuel filter, new cabin
filter, new German timing belt, new tensioner, new Serpentine belt, new
roller, new v-belt, new water pump (German with steel impellers) new
valve cover gasket, new intake to turbo pipe, cleaned intake manifold, cleaned inner cooler,

Calipers, new OEM drive axles, new tie-rods, new ball joints and new

VW confirms Golf GTD diesel coming to US for 2016
Wed, 03 Jul 2013Part of the Volkswagen Golf recipe that has helped the car sell more than 30 million units in just under 40 years is the number of variants in which the hatchback is offered. Building on that range here in the US, Automotive News is reporting that we will finally be getting the sporty Golf GTD, likely as a 2016 model. It's the GTD, you'll recall, that crosses the performance abilities of the venerable GTI with a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel engine.
After speaking with Andreas Valbuena, Volkswagen product manager for the Golf, AN not only says that the GTD will for sale in the US in a couple years, it also estimates a baseline price of around $27,000, which would place it between the current pricing for the GTI and the Golf R. The GTD is launching in Europe this summer, but we won't be getting the seventh-generation Golf in the US for another year. The news about the performance diesel model isn't entirely unexpected - VW officials have been hinting at it for at least a year now, going so far as to import a sixth-generation model for media test drives on US soil, a task we happily took them up on last year.
The Mk VII GTD uses VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine with output increased to 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds while returning more than 40 mpg in highway driving. We can't wait.
Volkswagen Cross Up! headed for production after Geneva reveal
Wed, 13 Feb 2013The last time we saw the Volkswagen Cross Up!, it was sitting out in the snow in prototype form, but the next time we'll see this slightly more rugged version of the diminutive Up! hatchback will be when it makes its production debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Looking like a micro-crossover with its raised ground clearance and black cladding, the Cross Up! will be the fourth "Cross" model for VW (after the CrossPolo, CrossGolf and CrossTouran) when it goes on sale this summer in mainland Europe (UK sales remain up in the air and US sales are highly unlikely).
Overall, the styling of the production Cross Up! has stayed fairly true to the 2011 concept car, including the front and rear fascias that offer a more rugged look, stocky 16-inch wheels and roof rack side rails. Inside, this model will get unique interior enhancements such as "Cross Up!" sill plates and an instrument panel available in red, black or silver. Like the regular Up!, the Cross Up! is powered by a 74-horsepower, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission, and it doesn't look like all-wheel drive will be part of the picture. For more details on the upcoming Cross Up!, check out VW's press release posted below.
VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs
Sat, 01 Mar 2014Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun.
For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany.
In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe."
