This beautiful 1971 Karmann Ghia is a show winner. No, not absolutely perfect, but as close as you are going to see without paying double this price.

New interior: custom leather seats (drivers seat is electric), new matching carpets throughout, including front 'trunk' area. Good glass, new paint in and out - this is a full body-off restoration, and I have some pictures of the process if you would like to see them. I will add them as soon as I can.

We purchased this car in the Denver area and easily drove it home to Southern Cal. She never missed a beat. We had no problem pegging the speedo on the downhill bits, and even going up hills we could stay with traffic. Feels safe and secure even at speeds above the legal limit.

Engine is based on a stock 1600 cc dual-port engine, with just a few add-ons:
Electronic ignition (no distributer)
Incorporates rev limiter (set to 4,000 RPM but fully adjustable)
Tachometer. See photos, the tach is in the upper left of the four smaller gauges.
Oil pressure gauge.
Single two-barrel carb and large-bore intake.
Polished goodies all around - billet pulley, etc.
Engine compartment has polished aluminum panels, looks great. Battery is under the package tray ('back seat' area).

Monza exhaust. Not too loud, but gives a good strong note, and does NOT have the 'bird chirp' sound most air-cooled VW cars have.

Theft lock on the shifter, all the keys work including glove box.

The speedo has been replaced, and is showing just under 2,000 miles. This is NOT the true mileage. I do not know the mileage on the engine, but it runs perfectly. Rebuild receipts included.

Custom stereo is great! Six disk changer, Good speakers in the custom kick panels, sub woofer with power amp in back (on it's own power switch). It even has a 12v outlet to plug your radar detector in. I do recommend that...

You can drive this car home, or I can work with your shipper to load the car. I will even deliver it to the local SoCal area: I love driving this thing up and down the coast with the windows open and the tunes blasting.

CA title is clear, current, and in hand ready to sign over.

IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.
To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.
Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

VW pondering low-cost sub-brand for China?

Wed, 30 Jan 2013

More detail is being sketched into the Volkswagen Group's plan to launch a low-cost brand for emerging markets. Late last year a German report quoted a VW rep saying that the brand has been interested in building a no-frills car, the kind that would challenge Dacia and Datsun, for a while. With both Proton and Suzuki effectively out of the partnership picture, a report in Reuters suggests VW could go straight to China, developing a car with its joint venture partners and building and selling it there.
Officially, company CEO Martin Winterkorn said the issue of a model for emerging markets would be decided this year but VW isn't any closer to confirming any kind of plan for a car in its portfolio underneath the Up!, remarking to Reuters about the China possibility, "That's an issue we're currently looking at."

Recharge Wrap-up: VW CEO mulls battery factory, voters approve $201B in transportation funding

Mon, Nov 21 2016

Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Muller says that it would "make sense" for the automaker to begin producing its own batteries. As the company moves toward electrification, Muller says it would be a smart move to build a battery factory. "If more than a quarter of our cars are to be electronic vehicles in the foreseeable future then we are going to need approximately 3 million batteries a year," he says. Volkswagen has agreed to cut 30,000 jobs in its restructuring, while committing to creating 9,000 jobs in Germany through battery manufacturing and mobility services. Earlier this month, voters in 22 states approved ballot measures adding up to $201 billion in funding for transportation projects, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. California passed 15 transportation measures, including one in Los Angeles worth $120 billion for roads, bridges, and transit. The state of Washington secured $54 billion for light rail and buses. Atlanta approved about $4 billion for road and transit projects. Illinois and New Jersey passed measures to prevent the diversion of transportation user fee revenue to other industries. A Delaware federal judge ordered the DOE to give the documents – which concern a presentation by Fisker to the DOE in which it falsely claimed to meet milestones set forth in a government loan – to lawyers in a case in which investors claim Fisker lied to them about financial troubles. While the DOE has given over documents already, they were incomplete and heavily redacted. "I understand that such disclosures may have a negative impact on future DOE analyses," says US District Judge Sue Robinson. "but conclude nonetheless that under the circumstances at bar – the public money at stake, the Congressional hearings, and the fact that Fisker Automotive is now a defunct company – the balance of interests favors plaintiffs."
