1970 Volkswagen Vw Karmann Ghia Convertible *unique* on 2040-cars
Tampa, Florida, United States
This is a unique, modified, one of a kind Karmann Ghia car that gets lots of attention and compliments everywhere we go. It was chopped and modified to a convertible with a roll bar and is now a two-seater. The outer door handles, bumpers, locks, and side windows were removed to drop weight and the doors were replaced with light, empty fiberglass doors. It has custom vinyl and plastic windows and a convertible top that are snapped into place with a buttom snap system. The top does have a tear in it, but is otherwise useable, although we hardly ever drive it with the top on. The engine was rebuilt about a year ago and converted from a 1776 cc to an 1835 cc, with a single barrel Weber 40 carburetor, and has only been driven about 2,000 miles or less since. It has a manual transmission and when the engine was rebuilt, we also put on a new exhaust, performance clutch, and brakes. We do not know how many miles are actually on the car. The speedometer says 44,772 miles, but that is incorrect. The car runs and drives good and is quick and lots of fun to drive!! We used it as a fun weekend cruising car, and took it to a few car shows, where it got a lot of looks and compliments. There is rust below the doors, which you can see in the photos, and some of it goes all the way through. Also, the gas gauge currently does not work due to an electrical issue. This is a great car, a great project, and very rare!! If you have any questions about the car, please ask before bidding, as there are NO REFUNDS and the car is being sold AS IS. You will also be responsible for picking up the car or arranging to have it shipped if you do not live local (Tampa, FL) within 7 days from date of purchase. Thanks for looking! On Jun-06-14 at 07:55:41 PDT, seller added the following information: I want to clarify that the car has a single double barrel Weber 40 carburetor. Also, the vinyl/plastic windows attach to the car using buttons and Velcro, and the convertible top attaches with buttons. Since the interior was completely redone, there is no glove box, only a "tray" under the dash. Basically, everything was done to this car to drop as much weight as possible.

Workers at Mississippi auto supplier protesting low wages
Tue, Feb 24 2015Workers at an automotive seat factory in Mississippi are protesting what they say are low wages and poor working conditions as they attempt to unionize in what could become a new front for the United Auto Workers in the state. A group of workers and supporters at the Faurecia SA seating plant in Cleveland plans a Tuesday march. "We work an auto job and we're getting paid like Wal-Mart wages," said Jamarqus Reed, a 32-year-old Pace resident who has worked at the plant for almost 10 years. "We're trying to better ourselves." Nationally, the UAW has staked its future on unionizing Southern auto factories, with limited success so far. The union has been trying to organize Nissan Motor Co.'s Canton, MS, plant for years, and lost a 2008 worker vote at a Johnson Controls plant in nearby Madison that French-based Faurecia bought in 2011. The UAW narrowly lost a unionization vote at the Volkswagen AG plant in Chattanooga, TN, last year, but the union has since qualified for a new labor policy at the plant that grants access to meeting space and to regular discussions with management. The policy stops short of collective bargaining rights. The union is also trying to organize Nissan's assembly plant in Smyrna, TN, and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. Protesters say Faurecia employees make a top wage of $11.64 per hour, while contract workers make $7.73 an hour. Company spokesman Tony Sapienza said that with overtime, the typical Faurecia employee makes more than the $27,000 a year that is the median wage around Cleveland. Wages are often low in the heavily impoverished Delta. "We are very confident that we are offering a very competitive wage," Sapienza said. Organizers criticize use of lower-paid contract workers Shannon Greenidge, a 44-year-old Cleveland resident, said she worked for a labor agency for more than two years before being hired directly by Faurecia. Greenidge said she makes $9.29 an hour, and can't save for retirement or to send her 11-year-old daughter to college. "That's not going to help me down the line in life," she said. Union supporters say as many as half the workers at the plant work for a contract-labor agency. Sapienza said that while the number varies, the company expects 15 percent of its workforce will be temporary employees this year. The UAW has organized some Southern auto parts plants in recent years, including Faurecia plants in Cottondale, Alabama, in 2012 and Louisville, Kentucky in 2013.
2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD is our favorite oil-burning GTI
Tue, 05 Mar 2013
The 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTD has officially bowed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Engineers managed to squeeze an additional 14 horsepower and 22 pound-feet of torque out of the familiar 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, nudging total output to 184 hp and 280 lb-ft for 2014. The figures are good enough to earn the GTD the honor of being the most powerful diesel Golf in Volkswagen history. A start/stop system helps improve efficiency over the previous generation with the new model consuming 56 miles per gallon on the EU cycle. That's up from the 2013 model's 46 mpg. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment, though a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox is also available.
The GTD also offers buyers a few aesthetic tweaks to help separate the hatch from its less potent siblings. Those include a more aggressive front fascia, special badges and 17-inch alloy wheels. Expect to find the GTD in one of three exterior colors, including Tornado Red, Black and Pure White. Check out the quick press release below for more details.
North American production of foreign marques to jump in 2014
Sun, 23 Dec 2012Wards Auto has released its North American Light Vehicle Production Forecast for 2014, and the report predicts foreign manufacturers will increase production on the continent some 3.9 percent by 2014. If accurate, that should see 123,000 additional cars, trucks and vans produced in North America, swelling the total number of units produced both by domestic and foreign manufacturers to 16.9 million light vehicles from a projected 15.6 million in 2013. Much of the increase can be attributed to the fact that Toyota intends to produce another car at its Blue Springs, MS plant as well as a new Lexus model at its Georgetown, KY facility in a year's time.
Likewise, Volkswagen intends to move production of a currently imported model to its plant in Puebla, Mexico. Daimler, Honda, Nissan and Mazda also plan to build additional models on North American soil for the first time. Around two-thirds of the new North American manufacturing will take place in Mexico, helping the country soak up a full 20 percent of the content's automotive production for the first time. You can head over to the Wards Auto site for the full report.
