Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept still makes us swoon

We know, we know – this hot little guy isn't really new or anything. Volkswagen first rolled out the Golf R 400 concept in Beijing earlier this year, and since its debut, we've heard rumors that the German automaker might-perhaps-maybe-hopefully build the thing. Its showing here in Los Angeles simply marks the first time it's debuting in America, and honestly, we can't get enough. So here it is, again. Hello, Golf R 400 – we love you. And what's not to love? What starts as a normal Golf R gets better with a more aggressive appearance, big wheels, some tasteful neon yellow accents, and a whole mess of power. The original concept packed 395 horsepower from an overblown 2.0-liter turbo-four, though the most recent reports suggest a production version could produce over 400 hp. To keep it all in line, the concept has all-wheel drive. And inside, it's the same functional, comfortable Golf we've always loved. There's nothing left to say, really. VW offers $2,000 to keep owners loyal

Volkswagen stands to lose a large portion of its customer base in the aftermath of the diesel emissions scandal, but the German automaker isn't about to sit back and watch its customers defect to other brands. To that end, VW is offering significant incentives to keep its buyers coming back. This latest incentive program will award a $2,000 loyalty bonus to existing VW drivers in the United States, to be applied to towards the purchase or lease of a new gasoline- or hybrid-powered vehicle. What's more, the offer can be combined with any other incentive on offer (save for employee or fleet discounts). The automaker is offering discounts of between $2,000 for a Passat to as much as $4,000 for a Touareg, CC, or Eos. The incentives are aimed to stave off a potential dip in sales as public trust of the company plummets in the wake of the diesel scandal. Despite the admission that it had manipulated emissions testing, Volkswagen's sales in the US actually increased in September. But they could stand to drop significantly over the course of October. The discounts may soften that blow some, but the manufacturer is not likely to be able to keep up those incentives in the long run. The move follows a similar initiative undertaken by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in Europe. There the Italian-American automaker is offering owners of Volkswagen Group vehicles – diesel or otherwise – significant discounts of up to $1,700 to trade into an FCA vehicle. Related Video:

Recharge Wrap-up: Smart Ready for Rent, MOIA comes to US in 2018

Daimler is launching its "Smart Ready to Rent" service in Europe. Beginning this month in German and French cities, the rental scheme bridges the gap between short-term Car2go rentals and longer leases. Customers book the Smart model of their choice – including the emissions-free Electric Drive and the hotter Brabus versions – for a period of one day up to three months. As such, Smart Ready to Rent is useful to those who live outside of an urban center. Users can book a car online or through a dealer, and vehicles are collected and returned at the dealership. Read more at Green Car Congress. Volkswagen will launch its MOIA mobility arm in the US in 2018. The recently announced brand will take on public transportation as a competitor with services such as ride hailing and car sharing. VW is looking into forging partnerships with the likes of technology and ride sharing companies. The automaker also expects to show an electric shuttle-type concept in 2017 for pooling services, but will use the three-row VW Atlas crossover in the meantime until that concept reaches production. Once lithium-ion batteries have outlived their usefulness for automotive duty, some automakers (BMW, Nissan, and Toyota included) are looking at ways to use their remaining capacity, such as for stationary energy storage. The new report, though, says that reusing batteries offers "questionable returns on account of reduced performance." Better to be like Tesla, and just recycle them. Read more at Hybrid Cars.
