The Volkswagen Jetta sedan comes in five different trim levels for 2009: S, SE, SEL, Wolfsburg, and TDI. The S, SE, and SEL are powered by a 170-horsepower, 2.5L 5-cylinder engine, matched either with a 5-speed manual gearbox or with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and sport mode. Top-of-the-range SEL models only offer the automatic. The Wolfsburg is a special edition that gets its power from a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower and 207 ft-lb of torque. It features special badging, premium wheels, and leatherette seating, and can be equipped with either a 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmission. The TDI returns to the Jetta lineup after a brief hiatus. Jetta TDIs are available in both the sedan and the wagon. A 2.0L direct-injected turbodiesel produces 140 hp and 236 ft-lb of torque, and can be mated to either the 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmissions. The EPA rates the Jetta TDI at 30 mpg city / 41 mpg highway. The new SportWagen boasts a surprising amount of cargo space. With the back seat up, there's 32.8 cubic feet of space, but with it folded forward the cargo area expands to nearly 67 cubic feet. An optional fold-flat front passenger seat provides additional cargo space. The GLI is a performance-oriented sports-sedan model that is powered by the same 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder found in the Wolfsburg. The GLI also includes a distinctive honeycomb grille, lower-body trim, red brake calipers, large round taillights, dual stainless exhaust tips, special sport seats, an F1-style, flat-bottom steering wheel, and aluminum interior trim.On both the Jetta sedans and SportWagens, front thorax-protecting side airbags are standard, along with full-length side-curtain bags. Side thorax bags for rear occupants are optional. All Jettas and GLIs also include anti-lock brakes with engine braking assist, and an electronic differential lock for improved traction. Volkswagen's electronic stabilization program (ESP) is now standard across the line. All Jettas come with air conditioning, cruise control, a CD sound system, eight-way adjustable front seats, power windows and heated mirrors, and tilt/telescopic steering standard. The SE adds a leather steering wheel and shifter, power sunroof, ten-speaker stereo with 6-disc CD changer, a 60/40 split folding rear seat and alloy wheels. The SEL adds 17-inch wheels, body-colored valences, and a special instrument cluster. TDI models are outfitted as a mix between S, SE, and SEL trims.Popular options include a navigation system and various sport styling kits that give the Jetta a high-performance look. The same package is available on the GLI, along with a special rear wing spoiler and front lip spoiler.

VW CEO talks up 20 new plug-in models in Frankfurt

Mon, Sep 14 2015

For years now, Volkswagen has dreamed big, forming plans to become the world's largest automaker. That trajectory includes a big plug-in vehicle push, and the CEO of Volkswagen, Martin Winterkorn, said that his group of companies will bring out 20 more EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2020. The list includes the next Phaeton and the Audi A8. "No commitment to electro-mobility can be any clearer than that," Winterkorn said, according to a VW press release. "Our Group already has the largest connected vehicle fleet on the road. By 2020 we will have transformed all of our new cars into smartphones on wheels." Perhaps most illustrative, Winterkorn admitted that the auto industry has turned a corner. "Technological leadership is no longer solely defined in terms of horsepower and torque," he said. "We are taking the precision, enduring value and quality of our cars into the new, digital world." The VW group is also showing off new plug-in concepts in Frankfurt this week, like the Tiguan GTE and the Porsche Mission E. Winterkorn's prepared remarks do not give out the details of these vehicles, but we'll have all the info from the show floor in short order. Stay tuned. PROF. DR. MARTIN WINTERKORN: "THE REINVENTION OF VOLKSWAGEN" 14/09/15 from Volkswagen Group 20 more electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2020 announced Group not only has broadest electric fleet, but also largest connected vehicle fleet on the road Customers should benefit from automated driving technologies as quickly as possible Volkswagen taking precision, enduring value and quality of its cars into the digital world Wolfsburg/Frankfurt am Main, September 14, 2015 – In the Volkswagen Group, there is a sense that a new era is dawning. On the eve of the 66th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main the CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, said on Monday evening: "We are in the process of reinventing Europe's largest automaker, laying the technological, economic and structural foundations." The Group Chairman announced there would be 20 more electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2020 – from compact cars to the next Phaeton and Audi A8: "No commitment to electro-mobility can be any clearer than that." He said the Group already had the broadest electric fleet in the automobile world, and added that Volkswagen was also at the forefront when it came to the future-oriented field of digitisation: "Our Group already has the largest connected vehicle fleet on the road.

VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris

Thu, 27 Jun 2013

Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special.
Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn't think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that's hardly a bad thing. The multitude of driving modes actually seem to add depth to the car rather than simply try to force one tool to do many jobs, and Harris even finds the machine's electronic power steering tolerable. As a result, Harris goes so far as to call the Volkswagen GTI "one of the best cars to actually own." How's that for high praise? You can watch the video for yourself by scrolling below.

Volkswagen officially grants access to UAW in Tennessee

Tue, Dec 9 2014

An audit at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN has revealed that at least 45 percent of the facility's workers support unionization, leading the German company to grant access rights to the United Auto Workers. This is a tremendous step in the UAW's long-running and at times contentious pursuit of the workforce at Chattanooga. With this latest move, "local leadership is ready to move forward with additional conversations with the company," the union said in a statement obtained by The Detroit News. "As a starting point, UAW Local 42 will take advantage of the company's offer to establish bi-weekly meetings with Volkswagen Human Resources and the Volkswagen Chattanooga Executive Committee." The News reports that UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel, shown above speaking at the Chattanooga plant last summer, claimed these meetings "will remind Human Resources and the Chattanooga Executive Committee of the mutually agreed-upon commitments that were made by Volkswagen and the UAW last spring in Germany. Among those commitments: Volkswagen will recognize the UAW as the representative of our members. We believe Volkswagen made this commitment in good faith and we believe the company will honor this commitment." It's important to note that despite Casteel's remarks, this is not a collective-bargaining agreement, Harley Shaiken, a labor professor at University of California, Berkeley, told The News. "But it is a step in the direction of recognition, which ultimately could lead to collective bargaining. This is not the end point," Shaiken said. "We don't know what's next. We're in unchartered territory."
