This car is low mileage for a 2002, is in good mechanical condition, but it has a number of things that need attention.  Rather than refurbishing the car, I am selling the car As Is.  This car is in Alpharetta in suburban Atlanta and is available for inspection or test drive at your convenience.  Here's a summary:

Good Things:  Engine runs well and always starts easily.  Automatic Transmission is fine.  Air Conditioning works.  Electric windows and door locks all work (driver's window switch is a little floppy).  Radio/cassette/CD works fine.  New battery this week.  Alloy wheels are in good condition, although one is in the trunk with a flat tire. Three tires have very good tread, but the tire/alloy wheel in the trunk may have a sidewall puncture. Body has no serious damage or dents, but there are some dings and scratches.  Handbrake works fine.  There is no odor in the car, and the car hasn't been smoked in.  I have both original keys.  I have a new, clean title.  No sign of rust anywhere, and I just cleaned the whole car thoroughly.

Bad Things:  Paint on most of the horizontal surfaces is in bad condition, except for the hood, which is in good condition.  See photos.  Passenger side mirror is cracked and is missing glass.  Paintwork below mirror is damaged where it looks like the mirror dangled.  Floor mats were shot so I pitched them, but carpet is good underneath.  Passenger seat fore/aft adjustment is balky.  Left tail light housing is cracked.  Righ rear stop light is out.  At 40 mph and higher, the car runs fine, but there seems to be some sort of extra roaring noise like the car is in too low a gear, but the tach seems to read normally.  Some of the vacuum hoses on the top of the engine were replaced with stock rubber hoses and couplings (roadside, probably) and don't look Factory. Glove box handle is missing.

Brake story.  This is my son's car.  One day last September he found he had an impossibly hard brake pedal so he had the car towed home, parked it, and borrowed my truck.  Well, eight months later I diagnosed the brake problem as two deteriorated vacuum hoses to the Brake Booster.  I replaced the hoses and the brakes worked normally, except the pedal was a bit hard at very low speed.  I took it to my local NAPA repair shop, and they found another deteriorated hose annd replaced it.  Now the brakes feel 100% good at 10 mph and above, and 90% good below 10 mph, as the pedal is just a bit harder than stock at parking speeds.  By the way, after sitting for eight months the car started immediately on the first turn of the key after I fitted a fresh battery.

VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris

Thu, 27 Jun 2013

Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special.
Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn't think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that's hardly a bad thing. The multitude of driving modes actually seem to add depth to the car rather than simply try to force one tool to do many jobs, and Harris even finds the machine's electronic power steering tolerable. As a result, Harris goes so far as to call the Volkswagen GTI "one of the best cars to actually own." How's that for high praise? You can watch the video for yourself by scrolling below.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee teases return with a Countach

Fri, May 29 2015

Unless you have an intense aversion to Jerry Seinfeld, it's hard not to find something to like about his show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. After all, the series combines funny people telling often hilarious stories while riding in ridiculously cool vehicles. The trailer for the sixth season is now online, and based on this tease, this definitely looks worth watching no matter what part of the videos interest you. Of course, it's the automotive portion that really grabs us, and Seinfeld has quite a fleet to showcase for season six. The trailer shows off a Lamborghini Countach, a '57 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, a classic Volkswagen Beetle in the green and white German Polizei livery, a Morgan, an Aston Martin DB5, and a Ferrari 308. On the more humorous side of things, the guest list at least includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jim Carrey, Steve Harvey, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher and upcoming host of The Daily Show Trevor Noah. Season six of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee premieres on Crackle on Wednesday, June 3, at 11:30 PM ET.

Anti-union group files lawsuit against VW and UAW

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

The fight for unionization at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN, factory isn't letting up. Yesterday, the National Labor Relations Board decided to allow anti-United Auto Workers employees at the plant the right to defend voting down the measure. Now, a group called the National Right to Work Foundation has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of five workers against VW and the UAW for allegedly working together to organize.
The group says in a release that it wants "to block further collusion between the company and the United Auto Workers." It alleges that VW forced workers to attend "mandatory pro-union meetings" and prevented managers from opposing. In a rebuttal on its website, the UAW called the claims "baseless" and said its actions were entirely legal.
One possible problem faces the carmaker in regards to the lawsuit. According to the Detroit Free Press, a recent US Court of Appeals ruling found that neutrality agreements like the one the business had with the UAW could be illegal if the company provided "things of value" to the union. The newspaper also claims that VW held a mandatory employee meeting concerning the election, but workers were free to leave during the UAW's presentation.
