I am selling my 2001 VW Jetta GLX manual transmission car. It has ~53,000 miles and is in perfect mechanical order. I have taken great care of this car over the years and it is so much fun to drive. Anything that needed to be done in terms of repair and routine maintenance was done, mostly by the dealer, although I have occasionally had reputable private mechanics do some work where necessary. The vehicle is in great shape. The only reason I am getting rid of it now is because my grandfather decided that he does not want to drive his car anymore (he's 96 years old) and has offered me his vehicle at a non-refusable price. My Jetta has no mechanical or structural problems, it runs tight, quiet, and smoothly, and if you want to have your mechanic inspect it I am sure s/he will find no problems. I just put great new Pirelli tires on it last year!
I am the only owner of this vehicle. Nobody ever smokes in it. I only let my dog in it once or twice on an emergency basis. When people get into the car, they usually compliment me on it.
Before posting this ad, I took the car into the shop to make sure everything is in good shape. Here are the only blemishes that I know about: (a) the rubber piece on the antenna has given way over the years and will need replacing if it bothers you (however, the dealer assures me that this is a cosmetic issue only), (b) one of the little VW emblems on the wheels is missing (again, this is a cosmetic issue only), (c) there is a serpentine belt that might need replacing soon according to my mechanic, (d) a few years back someone bumped into the back of this car while it was parked but the cosmetic damage was fixed (there was no structural damage, the repairs were made, and you would not have noticed unless I said something), (e) the instrument cluster has a fancy LCD computer which does not work anymore, and (f) there are some minor paint nicks on the hood which, again, are not really noticeable unless you are looking. The LCD computer issue happened during the 3rd or 4th year of ownership, but has not affected my love of this car or it's function. I would have fixed it, although the dealer tells me that it is hugely expensive to repair because the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced.
If you are interested, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, or if you want to see more pictures. Happy Bidding!

VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?
Fri, 16 May 2014The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,
VW Jetta TDI Value Edition drops price of diesel ownership to $21,295*
Wed, 08 Jan 2014Getting a new diesel-powered car just got a bit easier. Volkswagen has announced a new Jetta TDI Value Edition for 2014 that trims over $2,000 off the starting price of a Jetta TDI, making the most affordable diesel-powered car in America even more so. Prices start at $21,295 (*plus $820 for destination) for a Value Edition with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed dual-clutch automatic adds $1,100 to the price. For that money, owners will get 140 horsepower, 236 pound-feet of torque and 42 miles per gallon on the freeway.
Despite the lower price and being down on content versus the previous base Jetta TDI, the Value Edition does come quite well equipped, with standard heated cloth seats, a six-speaker stereo with a Media Device Interface, satellite radio, and one-touch, up-down power windows on all four doors. Customers will be giving up some notable stuff though, including tilt/telescopic steering, Bluetooth streaming audio, power seats and a multi-function steering wheel.
Still, if you're aching to get your hands on a new TDI, this is now the most affordable way to do it. We suspect having the lower MSRP will help the German manufacturer make even further diesel-powered inroads here in the States, a land where they cleared their decks of over 100,000 TDI models in 2013.
Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva
Thu, 21 Feb 2013After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
