If you are looking at this add then you know that this is a rare car today. This is not a TDI but the coveted 1.6 normally aspirated turbo diesel with the fully mechanical injection pump.  I have too many projects so I'm hoping to find someone who will finish this one. The odometer stopped working at 299,294 and I estimate the car to have approx. 325K on it.  The previous owner rebuilt the motor and transmission at 227K. This car runs strong and has been a great commuter.  Recent job change reduced commute from 60 miles/day to 12.

First the bad:  The engine does consume oil (as expected) and the oil pressure light comes once engine is hot and is below 1300 rpm.  It has 16-18 psi at idle.  I've run the car this way for two years and put in a new oil pump for peace of mind.  There is a leak behind the dash when it rains hard.  May be the antennae cable?  There is a small hole by the passenger rear tail light from rust that allows water to drip into the trunk.  A little bondo would fix.  The car needs an alignment.  I've held off since I wanted to install a new drivers side adjustable tie rod assembly.  The injection pump has begun to weep at the advance lever.  I'm assuming the O-ring or gasket in this area has begun to wear.

Here is a list of new parts replaced in the last 20K:

Rebuilt head
Driver and Passenger drive axles
Control arms with new bushings and ball joints
Manual steering rack
Passenger side tie rod
Rebuilt front calipers and installed new pads
Sachs friction disc and pressure plate kit
Self adjusting clutch cable
Oil pump
Timing belt and idler
All three motor mounts
New Alternator
Coolant flushed and new thermostat
All relays replaced
New exhaust from down tube back
All bushings in shift linkage have been replaced
Front struts are completely rebuilt -- gas charged strut, strut bearings and new springs.
Rear struts are completely rebuilt -- gas charged strut with new springs.
New proportioning valve
Rear brakes rebuilt: brake cylinders, spring kit, shoes, bearings and drums.

Auction also includes the following Bonus Material:

1988 GTI Recaro front seats - installed
1988 GTI dash with working instrument cluster
1988 GTI 60/40 rear seat (matches front seat)
1988 GTI front bumper cover
4 near mint door cards from a 1989 Jetta (gray on black)
ARP head stud kit
two boxes of MK2 assorted interior/exterior hardware (relays, temp switches, seat belts, wiper motor, door handles, etc.)

New parts include: (2) drivers tie rod assemblies, exhaust donut with clips, o-ring for oil cooler, valve cover gasket, steering column bushing, clutch cable, shifter relay, extra shifter bushings, and v-belt set.

The car recently did a 900 mile trip from North Carolina to Ohio and back on 95% biodiesel and pulled 38 mpg traveling through the Mountains of West Virginia fully loaded at 70 mph.  Awesome!

2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

Tue, 12 Feb 2013

More Fun Than A Prius, Less Sensible Than A TDI
Let's have some fun, and do some math. We're talking pretty rudimentary stuff, multiplication and division, to figure out if the upcoming Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid can make a baseline case for itself against two very strong competitors in this segment. The competitors in question, at least for now, are two more Jettas: the diesel-drinking TDI and the fit-for-the-masses SE with VW's long-serving 2.5-liter engine.
To keep the equations clean and simple (hey, we're writers), we'll calculate based on the most flattering EPA miles per gallon stat from highway driving for all cars, assume a healthy 20,000 miles driven per year, and factor in today's average cost for the respective fuels these three require: diesel (TDI), regular (SE) and premium (Hybrid). We'll also start with the base prices for all models.

Volkswagen throws a Polo-palooza with four new or upgraded models

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Volkswagen unveiled a parade of new and upgraded Polo models at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, including the Polo TSI BlueMotion, Polo TDI BlueMotion, Polo BlueGT and CrossPolo (pictured above). While they will likely never make an appearance this side of the pond, it is fun to see what European subcompact drivers will be driving later this year.
The new BlueMotion models represent the most efficient petrol and diesel options in their class, according to VW. The BlueMotion TDI offers just 73 horsepower from its diesel engine but gives the equivalent of 76 miles per gallon (US) in the EU test. The BlueMotion TSI brings a little more power with its 88-hp petrol engine and has a combined rating of 57 mpg (US) in the EU cycle.
The Polo BlueGT provides a balance of performance and economy, and for the 2014 model, it gains a 9-horsepower boost to its 1.4-liter turbocharged to give drivers 147 hp at the press of the accelerator. This year's car also has an optional Sport Select suspension with electronically controlled dampers to improve handling a bit. It's still fitted with active cylinder management to use as little gas as possible when cruising.
