2003 Volkswagen Golf Gti 20th Anniversary Hatchback 2-door 1.8l on 2040-cars
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Like Mazda, Volkswagen used Chicago to unveil a special-edition model, the GTI 20th Anniversary Edition. Introduced in 1983 as the Rabbit GTI, VW's latest pocket-rocket pays homage to the original with numerous styling cues, including a polished-metal Rabbit logo with "GTI" red badge on rear hatch. Additional performance accents include black-surround headlights; a larger-diameter, single polished exhaust; darkened taillamps; side mirrors housed in black; and body-color bumper, chin spoiler, side valances, lowered rear bumper, and fixed rear spoiler above the hatch. A lowered sport suspension, 18-inch Z-rated summer performance tires, and larger, vented four-wheel disc brakes help the new GTI tackle the curves. Power comes from VW's ubiquitous 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine--good for 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque--which is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The 20th Anniversary GTI's cockpit is a driver's paradise, with black-and-gray sport-cloth Recaro front seats wearing red "GTI" embroidery, black headliner, striped safety belts, the signature "golf ball" shift knob with red "GTI" logo, and a brushed-aluminum plaque that indicates the exact production number for the model, anywhere from 1 to 4000. This is number 3151. This special GTI comes to showrooms this spring (dated February 2003), priced at $23,225.
ADULT DRIVER. I purchased this GTI from Cherry Hill Volkswagen at 79,900 miles, February of 2009. I use it mainly for daily work commute (8 miles total) and some weekend getaways. I'm proud to say it's never been smoked in, and rarely eaten in. This car is an absolute BLAST to drive! Begrudgingly we need to part ways for something more family friendly. Clean title and CarFax. Standard Features: 1.8 liter turbo 4-cyclinder engine (180 hp, 173 lbs. ft. torque); 6-Spd manual transmission; power glass sunroof; ABS (4-Wheel); power windows and locks with remote keyless entry (2 remotes included); anti-theft alarm system; dual front air bags with side curtain protection airbag system; CFC-free air conditioning; power steering; tilt wheel; cruise control; rear-window electric defroster; rear-window wiper and washer The 2003 VW GTI 20th Anniversary Editions were limited to a 4,000-unit production run, of which only 2,000 are Black Magic Pearl. In addition to the standard features mentioned above, they include 18-inch rims and larger disc brakes with red calipers. The styling cues include red "GTI" badges and classic, polished-metal Rabbit logo, black surround on the headlights, and body colored chin spoiler, side valances, lower rear bumper valence, and hatch spoiler. The rear is accented with a larger-diameter, single polished exhaust and darkened taillamps. The interior features black and gray sport-cloth seating and a black headliner. The Recaro Sport seats have larger bolsters and red "GTI" embroidery. Other interior styling cues include red striped seat belts, black floor mats with gray borders, "Golf ball" shift knob with red "GTI" logo, and perforated black leather with gray stitching on the shift boot, steering wheel, and handbrake. Brushed-aluminum accents, alloy foot pedals, and doorsills with red "GTI" logo complete the interior. Volkswagen formally introduces super-efficient XL1
Mon, 04 Mar 2013Lightweight and low drag are hallmarks of great sportscar design. But when paired with a super-efficient, hybrid powertrain, you have the Volkswagen's XL1 that has been formally introduced in Geneva today.
When the 1,700-lb, carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater hits the road, its claimed 261 miles per gallon will make it the world's most-fuel-efficient production car. Though "production car" might be a stretch since VW said in a February press release that the XL1 would be built using "handcrafting-like production methods." We translate that to mean you won't be seeing many of these cars on the road. Though no one at VW has mentioned pricing yet, early rumors suggested a six-figure price tag.
That's supercar budget for a vehicle that has a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder diesel engine and a 27hp electric motor. With numbers like that, owners can expect 0-62 mph times of 12.7 seconds and top speed near 100 mph.
Small 3-row crossover SUVs specifications compared on paper
Thu, May 10 2018There's no shortage of three-row vehicles on the market for carrying seven or more people and their stuff wherever they all need to go. Just about every car company has at least one large crossover or traditional SUV with three rows of seats, and there are still plenty of minivans to pick from. But most of these vehicles are large, pricey, and frequently thirsty. Fortunately, there are still a handful of smaller crossovers that deliver 7-passenger capability in a smaller, cheaper package. We've gathered four of the small three-row set here to compare them based on space, power, fuel economy, pricing, and more. They include the very old Dodge Journey, the slightly less old Mitsubishi Outlander and Kia Sorento, and the relatively new Volkswagen Tiguan. You can see the raw numbers in the chart below, followed by a more detailed breakdown and some notes on how we like each of these vehicles. For in-depth opinions on the vehicles, be sure to check out our full reviews, and if you want to compare these with other vehicles, try out our comparison tools. Engines, transmissions and performance Interestingly, three of the four crossovers here utilize similar engines for their four-cylinder offerings. The Dodge, Kia and Mitsubishi all feature naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. Only the Volkswagen Tiguan chooses turbocharging and a smaller 2.0-liter displacement. But because of its turbocharger, the Tiguan's four-cylinder is easily the most potent, making a healthy 221 pound-feet of torque, which is more than 40 more than the Sorento, the crossover with the next most torque. The VW is also second-most powerful, just one horse behind the Sorento. The Outlander is the least powerful in the four-cylinder class. The Journey is only barely better, but it will probably feel as slow or worse thanks to its ancient 4-speed automatic. The four-cylinder Sorento and Outlander each have 6-speed automatic transmissions, and the VW has an 8-speed. The Sorento with a V6 has an 8-speed, too. View 17 Photos Moving up to the V6 class, the Outlander is once again at the bottom. It actually makes less torque than the turbo VW Tiguan. The Journey and Sorento are almost perfectly matched. The Journey makes a bit more torque; the Sorento makes a bit more power. The Journey also gets upgraded to a 6-speed automatic. Another powertrain consideration to bare in mind is whether all-wheel-drive is necessary.
The VW Sport Coupe GTE Concept promises exciting things for brand's future [w/video]
Tue, Mar 3 2015In recent years, it seems as though the Audi allotment of design talent from the Volkswagen Group has gotten braver, while the VW designers have become more conservative. One look at the current Volkswagen range reveals a lot of tidy sheet metal, but hardly any that rank as evocative or emotionally compelling. If the rhetoric around this Sport Coupe GTE Concept turns to action, however, VW's mass-marketed cars could become a lot more interesting to look at. Sharp creases and bold graphics can be found on just about every inch of the concept, and the large wheels at either extreme corner help to sell this as a "four-door coupe" more than most executions of that now hackneyed styling term. And, if you like what you see, then you might want to hold out for quickly approaching versions of this look on production models. Design head Walter de Silva says this language will be "shaping the immediate future" for VW product. Mechanically, the Coupe also previews more hybridization for the VW line. The concept has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with a turbo 3.0-liter V6 driving the front wheels, and an electric motor sending yet more power to the rear. You can read up on the details in our official post from a few days ago, or just click through the pretty pictures in the gallery above. SPORT COUPE CONCEPT GTE MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT THE GENEVA AUTO SHOW Four-door coupe marks beginning of a new design era at Volkswagen Wolfsburg/Geneva, March 2015 -Volkswagen will debut the Sport Coupe Concept GTE at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, heralding a new and progressive Volkswagen design language. "Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupe Concept GTE. This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more. It shows how the highest-volume brand of our Group is shaping the immediate future," says Walter de Silva, Head of Design of Volkswagen AG. Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Development, elaborates: "This breathtakingly dynamic coupe is unlike any other to appear in this class. The design of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is an impressive alternative to the classic sedans of the B and C segments-it has the style of a sport coupe that is enriched by the functionality of a large hatchback and the interior space of a sedan." Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of the Volkswagen Brand, adds: "The Sport Coupe Concept GTE is another milestone of expressive design.
