***2002 Volkswagen GTI 337 Edition***

One of 1500 made!

Only 34,747 original miles!

You are looking at the holy grail of MK4 GTIs, the 2002 337 edition. There were only 1,500 of these cars made for the US market in 2002 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Golf in Europe. If you are looking at this auction, you probably know what a 337 is, but just in case here are the extras that make this car special:

  • 18x7.5" BBS RC Wheels with special ball peen finish
  • Perforated leather shift boot and handbrake
  • Red and black seat belts
  • Red and Black upholstered Recaro Le Mann seats
  • Factory body kit (front valance, sideskirts, hatch spoiler, and rear valance)
  • 02M 6-speed manual transmission
  • Larger front brakes (312mm) with Red Calipers
  • Lowered sport tuned suspension
  • Brushed aluminum interior trim
  • Sunroof Delete

The Story:

I purchased this car from the previous owner who couldn't afford to make this car what he wanted it to be. He had started modifying it, but luckily I got a hold of it before too much irreversible damage could be done. I thought this car should be kept stock being only 1500 were made. If you want to modify a MK4, buy a regular Mk4 and have fun right? When I got it the car had Jetta struts/shocks (PO removed and kept air suspension he installed), fake fiberglass front valance, aftermarket grill, wrong rear valance, DVD head unit, some poor bodywork, a new K04-001 turbo/manifold, and a 3" catless downpipe. I spent the next six months sourcing the missing OEM parts and carefully bringing this beauty back to its former glory. Here are some of the parts I replaced:

  • New correct OEM VW Sports shocks/struts all around
  • H&R Cup Kit springs (springs that came on the car when I got it were Jetta springs)
  • One new BBS RC ball peened wheel (One that came on the car was off a GLI)
  • New Continental DWS Extreme tires all around (now have only around 2000 miles on them)
  • Neuspeed 25mm front sway bar to match the 28mm rear sway bar installed by PO
  • Original Monsoon Radio
  • Original 337 aluminum pedal covers
  • OEM 337 front and rear valances
  • OEM grill
  • OEM correct side turn signals and markers
  • Lots more little pieces here and there but you get the idea

I did not have the original turbo, so the K04 is still installed. It probably has about 4-5k miles on it. It runs great and functions basically as the stock one would since it is running on the stock ECM. Leave it as it is or get the APR tune and make some big power!

The 3" stainless cat delete downpipe is still on the car, and runs perfect without throwing a CEL code! I also  have the stock downpipe with cat that will come with the car if you want to change it back.

OEM GTI monster floor mats are installed front and back and look great.

Paint is very good. Pretty much the whole car has been repainted but color matches very well.

Interior is very clean, no rips or tears in the seats, looks almost new!

Title History:

I have a clean and clear Oregon title in hand. The title I received from the previous owner was also a clean Oregon title. When you run a Carfax or Autocheck report it shows that the car was owned by an insurance company in California at one point, which flags it as possibly totalled/salvage. I have spoken with numerous people about this and can't get a clear answer as to what this means. Some say different title brands don't carry over state-to-state, some people say it could have been a clerical error when the car came to Oregon, I don't know. I bought the car knowing it had a questionable title history and am selling it the same way. You will get a clean Oregon title with the car, but I have no idea if it will come back clean when you retitle the car in a different state. Because of this eBay is making me list the title as salvage on the auction. Please bid accordingly.

I am sure there is a lot I missed, but hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves! Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thanks for looking.

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.

Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept still makes us swoon

Fri, Nov 21 2014

We know, we know – this hot little guy isn't really new or anything. Volkswagen first rolled out the Golf R 400 concept in Beijing earlier this year, and since its debut, we've heard rumors that the German automaker might-perhaps-maybe-hopefully build the thing. Its showing here in Los Angeles simply marks the first time it's debuting in America, and honestly, we can't get enough. So here it is, again. Hello, Golf R 400 – we love you. And what's not to love? What starts as a normal Golf R gets better with a more aggressive appearance, big wheels, some tasteful neon yellow accents, and a whole mess of power. The original concept packed 395 horsepower from an overblown 2.0-liter turbo-four, though the most recent reports suggest a production version could produce over 400 hp. To keep it all in line, the concept has all-wheel drive. And inside, it's the same functional, comfortable Golf we've always loved. There's nothing left to say, really. We love this car, and you should, too. Check it out in the gallery above.

Volkswagen Group names Paefgen head of classics program

Tue, 04 Oct 2011

You may remember the name Franz-Josef Paefgen. Until recently, the German engineer and executive was head of both Bentley and Bugatti. Before that he was chief executive of Audi, after working for several years at Ford. He technically "retired" earlier this year, but like the cars he helped create, an executive like Paefgen could never really retire. So it should come as little surprise that the Volkswagen Group has named Dr. Paefgen head of its Classic program.
In his new capacity, Paefgen will oversee the historic automobile activities of the entire VW Group, including those of Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda, Audi, Lamborghini, and of course Bentley and Bugatti. It strikes us as a suitable semi-retirement for the man responsible in no small part for the Bugatti Veyron and Bentley Mulsanne, to name just two, and who was decorated in 2006 by the ACO as the "Spirit of Le Mans" for his contribution to endurance racing. Read the official announcement after the break.
