Starts, runs, drives. This would be a good car that needs tlc to make a daily driver or a more thorough approach to make a really good example of fun, spacious, and great fuel mileage car. I drove it in the fall and winter and I am not sure the electric radiator fan comes on. It has an air conditioning compressor on the engine but I don't know the condition of the system. The title is mileage exempt. The wipers didn't move last time I started it but they ran before just fine. The headliner cloth is gone and the foam backing is still there. The back seat has a fray in the fabric on the drivers side you may see in the pictures. The drivers seat doesn't quite match the others. It is kind of a gray/blue fabric seat and the others are gray/black fabric with black sides. The top of the door panels need to be reattached as you can see in the pictures. We replaced the brakes and the tires are about 80%. The car drives pretty good and fairly smooth to 65 which is the fastest I had it. The body is probably the best attribute for an older diesel. I didn't see any rust other than the surface rust in the paint scrapes as shown in the pictures the worst being above the rear drivers wheel. The clear coat has come off in some areas giving it that blue to silver look. I don't really know what mpg it currently gets because I drive about 5 different vehicles and was unable to keep accurate records but I have read of others getting 50 to 55mpg.  Ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them or if you want to inspect it call me. 864-303-3286 I purchased the car myself for a high mpg vehicle because of the condition of the body and interior, assuming the rest of the parts can be replaced if needed, but I can't find time to give it the attention it deserves.

Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war

Sun, 30 Dec 2012

A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?

Porsche again staring down another $1.8B in hedge fund lawsuits

Wed, 15 May 2013

The sequence of events from 2007 that began with Porsche's secret attempt to take over Volkswagen, and instead lead to Porsche being taken over by VW, continues to instigate lawsuits against the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. A group of hedge funds that suffered over $1 billion in losses sued the car company in New York. Porsche had publicly stated it wasn't trying to buy VW, the hedge funds in question were shorting VW stock, and when Porsche's actual intentions were revealed, the stock shot up and the hedge funds took a beating.
The case was thrown out over the issue of jurisdiction, then appealed, only to see another suit filed on top of that. After that, most of the hedge funds withdrew their claims in New York and Porsche offered a 90-day window to refile in Germany where it is already fighting a number of other suits over the same issue. The hedge funds accepted the offer, refiling in Stuttgart for $1.8 billion in damages. According to Bloomberg, Porsche hasn't commented on the refiling, but as the same plaintiffs are involved, it's safe to assume that the carmaker still feels the case is "unsubstantiated and without merit." It has fared alright so far even in German courts, with two lesser cases against it thrown out last year.

YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
