AUCTION STYLE RELIST

Additional work since the original classified listing: Replaced the valve cover gasket and repaired loose exhaust manifold heat shield.

Original Listing information follows without edits:

I bought this car in early April as a project from a local repair shop. Though the top was new, the paint was an issue. I also noticed a duct tape repair on the driver's door card. The oversized 16"x7.5" wheels had bald tires on them so they had to be changed out. After quite a bit of work, this car is ready to sell! So here is what I have done:

I had the transmission replaced with rebuilt unit by Greenville Transmission Clinic. The clutch was replaced while the transmission was out. The passenger side axle was also replaced at the same time. I then took the car to Maaco for a fresh coat of paint. After I got the car home, I had received the VW OEM wheels that I had bought here on eBay and put them on the car with two new tires. I also put the replacement driver's side door card (from a 2001 Cabrio) on to be rid of the duct tape repair. I then noticed wheel bearing noise so I first replaced the left-rear wheel bearing (I checked the rear brake shoes which were good) which reduced the noise some, but not completely. Next, I replaced the front right wheel bearing which required replacing the hub since the old wheel bearing came apart and the inner race was seized and would not come off the hub. While I had the front wheels off for this, I noticed that the front brake pads needed replacement which came next, along with an oil change with Castrol GTX and a new Fram oil filter. Finally, I replaced the left rear tail light lens with a spare I had to finish the project off!

There is a CD stereo system installed but does not power-up for some reason. The cruise control is present but doesn't lock in for some reason. But the car has a nice smooth ride and offers a very comfortable ride. Though I hold a clear title to the car, I have not bought a tag to take the car on anything other than local secondary roads to road test for any distance. The engine has plenty of power so there will be no disappointment there. The Greenville Transmission, Maaco, and other part receipts will be provided to the new owner for the warranty that goes with these. Otherwise, no other warranty is offered either expressed or implied.

The Volkswagen Group switches official language to English

Wed, Dec 14 2016

The Volkswagen Group can't be fairly thought of as entirely German anymore, so the news that the company is switching its official language to English to help attract managers and executives is a rational, if surprising, decision. While many VW Group companies are still staidly German in character and culture, consider the other companies that it controls: Bentley (British), Bugatti (French), Ducati and Lamborghini (Italian), Skoda (Czech), Scania trucks (Swedish), and SEAT (Spanish). Not to mention the large Volkswagen Group of America operation, which constructs cars in Chattanooga, TN. Volkswagen's explicit motivation is to improve management recruitment – making sure the company isn't losing out on candidates for important positions because they can't speak German – and that's inherently sensible in a globalized economy. Particularly considering, like it or lump it, that English is the lingua franca of said global economy. It also should make it inherently easier to communicate between its world-wide subsidiaries and coordinate operations. It's hard to say for sure if this will have any impact on the consumer, although it's easy to see the benefits if, say, VW Group hires some American product planners or engineers and they push for features and designs that more closely suit American needs. After all, the US is a hugely important market for any manufacturer, and so the switch to English almost certainly has something to do with the outsized influence of the US in the global economy. And there doesn't seem to be a downside from a purely rational perspective, although it could mean that the Group's corporate culture becomes less German. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your perspective. Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
