For sale is a manual 1984 Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon with less than 1000 miles on a rebuilt engine.  Van was a west coast vehicle until 1997 and then came to North Carolina.  As it's never suffered harsh winters the body is in great shape!

THIS VEHICLE IS A ROAD TRIP WAITING TO HAPPEN!

We purchased the vehicle approximately 3 years ago with a dream to drive it cross country as well as use it as a daily driver.  We specifically looked for a vehicle with body in great shape as anyone who knows these Vanagons is aware that a little visible rust usually means a lot of hidden rust.  We were lucky to find this beauty which is basically rust free, and living in his original body and mostly all original paint.

As life happens we were unable to take the time drive cross country. But our Vanagon was taken care of with that intention.  We kept him healthy and happy and road worthy.

The details:

BODY & PAINT:
rust free and original body
mostly original paint in light cream/yellow option (you sometimes see orange or brown vans of this age, but the light color of ours reflects the sun and keeps you cooler while camping!)
RECENTLY PAINTED the pop top so it's a fresh bright white
hinges- the support arms for pop top when raised- have been reinforced
NEW SEALS around entire pop top
NEW CANOPY is the high end hemp option from Go Westy (costs nearly $500!)

INTERIOR:
set up for twin 12V batteries- so you have power when there is no hookup! The engine charges both batteries! (currently equipped with only the main battery)
swivel captain chairs
all curtains including front privacy drape and rear bug screen included (the screen is great for sleeping at night and getting a breeze!)
stove functional and clean
refrigerator runs on a/c power
all gauges work except tachometer
cd/radio not hooked up but included

DRIVETRAIN:
1.90L Engine
REBUILT SUMMER OF 2011... LESS THAN 1000 miles on rebuilt engine!
NEW seals
NEW gaskets
NEW rings
NEW pushrods, lifters
HEADS COMPLETELY REBUILT, NEW valves, NEW springs, NEW belts, NEW hoses
NEW fuel pump and fuel filter
Engine was professionally tuned by a local Westy dealer, throttle body replaced
Transmission- flywheel refaced, NEW pressure plate, NEW CLUTCH, NEW throw out bearing, and transmission fluid changed

THIS VAN IS ROADWORTHY TODAY!  IT IS FULLY TITLED IN NORTH CAROLINA, REGISTERED AND RECENTLY PASSED ALL REQUIRED INSPECTIONS!

Here's a summary of what we would do if we were going to keep this van:
1) Air-conditioning:  It was inoperable when we bought it and still is.  Honestly we didn't need it while driving.  The breeze from having the windows down was enough for us- and as these vans are loud, having the windows down made no difference to noise level. Plus while in camp you need a separate a/c setup anyway.  The regular vehicle air conditioning is not for use while camping in these vans.
2) Cooling pipes: They are still the original pipes and we intended to replace them eventually.

Remember, this is a vehicle that is almost 30 years old.  We have stated to the best of our knowledge all of the work done on this vehicle- its strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who knows about these VW camper vans knows they are ALWAYS an ongoing project.  Things are bound to come up that need to be replaced or upgraded.  That's part of the joy of joining the VW camper family! :) But this vehicle is ready to use right now!  If we don't sell it we are taking it camping ourselves!

Volkswagen drops "GTi" lawsuit against Suzuki

Tue, 02 Oct 2012

Way back in 2004, Volkswagen took umbrage with Suzuki being granted permission to use the nameplate "SWIFT GTi" for a performance variant of its small-car offering (2012 equivalent seen here). Now, eight years and surely some very steep legal bills later, VW has finally dropped its claim against Suzuki.
The General Court of the European Union stated, back in March of this year, that Suzuki's GTi registration could not be confused with VW's "Golf GTI." Volkswagen had appealed that ruling, though has now reportedly called off the dogs. In fact, Germany's Die Welt reports that the appeal has been dead for several weeks now.
This news comes amongst continued arbitration acrimony between the two automakers, all revolving around VW's forced divestiture of nearly 20-percent stake it purchased in Suzuki some two years ago.

The best cars we drove this year

Tue, Dec 30 2014

Six hundred and fifty. That's roughly how many cars pass through the hands of Autoblog editors every year, from the vehicles we test here at home, to the cars we drive on new product launches, testing roundups, long-term cars, and so on. Of course, our individual numbers vary due to several reasons, but at the end of the day, our team's repertoire of automotive experience is indeed vast. But let's be honest, some cars certainly stand out more than others. So as the year's about to turn, and as we're readying brand-new daily cat calendars for our cubicles, our editors are all taking time to reflect on the machinery that made this year so special, with one simple, open-ended question as the guide – a question that we're asked quite frequently, from friends, family, colleagues, and more. "What's the best car you drove this year?" Lamborghini Huracan When I review the list of everything I drove in 2014, picking an absolute favorite becomes almost impossible. I mean, how does one delineate between the joy offered by cars as different as the Alfa Romeo 4C, Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-AMG GT S and even the humble-yet-wonderful Chevy Colorado? Okay fine, I'll just pick the Lamborghini. I drove the Lamborghini Huracan LP 610-4 on a racetrack, in the mountains, and along southern coast of Spain. It felt like the king of the car jungle in all of those places, sucking the eyeballs of observers nearly out of their heads as it drove by, and almost melting my brain with its cocktail of speed and grip and intense communication. It feels a little easy to say that the one new supercar I drove this year was also my favorite, but the fact is that the Huracan is one of the finest cars I've driven during my career, let alone 2014. Judge me if you must. – Seyth Miersma Senior Editor Rolls-Royce Wraith There are a couple of ways to look at the question, "What's the best car you drove this year?" In terms of what was so good I'd go out and buy one tomorrow, that'd be my all-time sweetheart, the Volkswagen GTI. Or if I'm just talking about sheer cool-factor, maybe something like the Galpin GTR1, BMW i8, or Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. But instead, I'm going to write about the sheer opulence of being the best of the best. The hand-crafted, holier-than-thou, shut-your-mouth-when-I'm-talking-to-you supremacy. I'm picking the Rolls-Royce Wraith. I drove the Wraith for a week in April, and was really, really impressed. This car does everything, perfectly.

Volkswagen reveals updated Sharan minivan for Europe

Sun, Feb 22 2015

Volkswagen's experiment with rebadging Chrysler minivans as the Routan may not have gone so well for the German automaker in North America, but overseas it offers vans of its own. Even aside from the fullsize Crafter and Transporter vans sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the passenger car division offers its own minivans like the Touran and the Sharan. Now it's revealed an updated version of the latter. The VW Sharan was first introduced back in 1995 and entered its second generation in 2009, built in Portugal alongside the Seat Alhambra and offering seating for seven in its five-door form. The new model looks largely the same as the existing one, but benefits from new taillights and a revised interior. But most of the upgrades are found under the skin. There's an array of turbocharged and direct-injected engines that are now up to 15 percent more efficient than those found in the existing model, with two gasoline engines ranging in output from 148 horsepower to 217, and three diesels producing 113, 148 and 181 hp. Along with the updated powertrain options, the revised Sharan also gets a host of new safety and convenience systems, including automatic post-collision braking, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking, Lane Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and Blind Spot Monitor. Inside, the infotainment system has been upgraded as well. The updated Sharan arrives hot on the heels of the new Caddy released earlier this month and just in time for the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Wolfsburg, 18 February 2015 Show premiere of the Sharan in Geneva - Even more technical highlights for the popular Volkswagen MPV - New TSI and TDI engines* are up to 15 per cent more fuel efficient Volkswagen is presenting the technically updated Sharan at the Geneva International Motor Show. Numerous new convenience and assistance systems make the family-friendly MPV one of the most advanced models in its segment. A wide range of infotainment systems also guarantees full connectivity to many smartphones and tablets. At the same time, the fuel economy of the petrol and diesel engines* was improved by up to 15 per cent. The updated Sharan will arrive on the German market this summer; advance sales begin in April. Along with the standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which automatically initiates braking after a collision if the driver is no longer able to intervene, numerous optional assistance systems are available in the updated Sharan as well.
