i have VOLKSWAGEN script that goes on hatch. NEW
good battery! fairly new

THE USUAL "PROBLEMS" WITH AN OLD BUS

spots oil, not a ton, but does drip when parked. this may be fixed with a new oil pan bolt and seal. (easy fix)
if you are a novice vw driver the shifting won't be a problem, if you are new at it, shifting can get a little stubborn , just takes some time to get used to
the patterns.
1 tire has a slow leak, i just fill it up every so often... i don't drive it enough to go buy a new tire. (easy fix, and cheap)
found a rust through area under passengers feet area. previous owners filled it with bondo. i grinded it out. a clean cut with a piece of sheet metal will fix the problem,. hole is about 5"x3" .
has minor surface rust, as any 40 yr old car will have. but no rust throughs on the exterior. no panels will need to be replaced.
sloping door is from another bus. the previous owner did not attach a proper sliding hanger i think. it might be missing something. its a little lose when you open it. and needs to be pushed up inter place when it closed. this is common when doors are changed! i was told by my mechanic it can be fixed. but it was fine for me. still opens and closes.
i lost the keys at one point, had to get ignition key re made. therefore i did not replace the door keys. to obtain door keys the door handle wil need to be taken to a locksmith to re key. the ignition cost me $20 for a new key, doors will be cheap as well!!
no keys for hatch and engine lid. you can replace locking mechanism , very cheap . busdepot.com , easy fix
a few dents that i had filled with bondo, nothing major.

bus originally came with a pancake engine. a 1600 dual port was installed, conversion tin was never installed. therefore there is a gap in the engine compartment, my mechanic said this is not necessary , more air flow gets to engine which is good considering it is air-cooled,  conversion tin is a personal preference item, and i chose not to purchase . does not affect condition, only cosmetic addition

OVERALL

it is a good bus. in good condition for its age. turn key and ready to drive every day!!!   unfortunately i do not drive it enough with my schedule and don't have the time to give it that little sparkle that it deserves.
drive as is , or put a little time and effort to get it looking clean!!

Why this could be the perfect time for Apple to make a car play

Fri, Aug 31 2018

While the automotive and technology worlds have been pouring billions into autonomous vehicles (AVs) and preparing to bring them to market soon as shared robo-taxis, Apple has mostly sat on the sidelines. Of course, Apple is the last company to ever make its intentions known, and the super-secret tech cult giant hasn't been totally out of the AV game based on the clues that have slipped out of its Cupertino, Calif., citadel over the past few years. Related: Apple self-driving cars are real — one was just in an accident News first broke in 2015 that it had assembled an automotive development team, in part by poaching high-profile talent from car companies, to work on a top-secret self-driving vehicle project code-named Titan. (Thank you very much, Nissan.) Apple also subsequently broke cover by making inquiries into using a Northern California AV testing facility and receiving a permit to test AVs on public roads in California. But then as the AV race started to heat up in the last few years, Apple reportedly began scaling back its car activities by downsizing team Titan. More recently, Apple's car project has shown signs of life with the hiring a high-level engineer away from Waymo and luring one Tesla's top engineers and a former employee back to Apple. It also inked a deal with Volkswagen to provide a technology platform and software to convert the automaker's new T6 Transporter vans into autonomous shuttles for employees at tech company's new campus. That is a far cry from giving rides to Wal-Mart shoppers, like Waymo is doing as part of its AV testing in Phoenix. But this could be the perfect time for Apple to enter the AV market now that ride-sharing is reaching critical mass and automakers and others are planning to deploy fleets of robo-taxis. Apple could easily establish a niche as a high-end ride-sharing service – and charge a premium – given its cult-like brand loyalty and design savvy. The growth of car subscription models could also play in Apple's favor since is already has many people hooked on paying for phones in monthly installments – and eager to upgrade when a new and better model becomes available. To achieve this, some believe Apple will fulfill co-founder and CEO Steve Job's dream of building a car. And as the world's first and only $1 trillion company it's sitting on a mountain of cash that certainly gives it the means. But other tech darlings like Tesla and Google have discovered how difficult it can be to build cars at scale.

VW invests in QuantumScape for potentially fireproof, long-range EV batteries

Mon, Dec 8 2014

VW might be getting ready to push its plug-in technology in a big way thanks to an investment in the battery startup QuantumScape. Key point: the solid-state battery is said to be fireproof and will offer tremendous range advantages. Details are not abundant yet, but according to Bloomberg, VW of America bought a five-percent stake in QuantumScape (and has an option to raise its holding). The tech could "more than triple" the EV range of VW, Porsche and Audi plug-in vehicles as soon as the middle of 2015, according to unnamed sources that Bloomberg talked to. Former Stanford University researchers started QuantumScape in 2010. The bare-bones QuantumScape website (there's nothing there other than some contact information) doesn't offer many hints about what's happening at the company, but GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher notes that QuantumScape is licensing tech from the "All Electron Battery" project at Stanford a few years ago. It certainly sounds amazing: [It's] a completely new class of electrical energy storage devices for electric vehicles that has the potential to provide ultra-high energy and power densities, while enabling extremely high cycle life. The All-Electron Battery stores energy by moving electrons, rather than ions, and uses electron/hole redox instead of capacitive polarization of a double-layer. ... If successful, this project will develop a completely new paradigm in energy storage for electrified vehicles that could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. If that's what's coming in a future e-Golf or E-Tron, sign us up.

Help a couple drive their 1984 Vanagon around the world

Mon, 22 Apr 2013

Meet Brad, Sheena and Nacho
Driving through China is a pricey proposition. The couple will need to pony up a staggering $19,514 just to cover the fees.
Brad and Sheena Van Orden are in the midst of a life-defining campaign to travel around the world, and they're doing it in a 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon custom built for the occasion. The past 15 months have seen the couple quit their jobs with Gore-Tex and drive from Arizona to the very southern tip of Argentina after spending a full two years saving and preparing for the trek. Now they're in southern Asia gearing up for the next leg of their journey.
