Note: There is a "lien" that shows up on the carfax, this is because a "registered" owner distinct from the "legal" owner is shown on the title, this does not represent a financial debt of any sort or any dispute, it was done as a convenience among family members for reasons regarding insurance and will not be any problem with transfer to new owner. Can send photo of title to verify this. This Westy has been meticulously restored mechanically and cosmetically, see list for particulars. Btw I have no relationship to the abandoned car dealership in the photo, it was included just for artistic (?) purposes. The engine was REPLACED by the previous owner at about 120K with a new engine from Audi, has the sticker on it still. Estimation of miles on the engine is about 40-50K. Runs VERY well, no fluid leaks at all of any type. Personally I like the 1.6L engine better than the later one because it doesn't have problem with broken rods leading to... disaster. Trans shifts and works perfectly, may be original not sure. Steering is manual and there is no AC. Drives like a vanagon should, no wobbles, shakes or rattles, rear engine compartment has been sound deadened, runs cool all cooling components working great, steering tight though original bushings are in place, rack tight. I have received two complements on the van by experienced Vanagon mechanics, owner of Northwesty drove it and said it ran and drove "really nice" (he put a new water pump in it), and Jeremy at Redline Euro Automotive in Richland WA claimed that after I put the new shift parts in it that it shifted better than the job he just did lol. The van needs absolutely nothing for daily use or any trip you would want to take in it.

List of new or recent parts/work done:
Koni shocks
Nokian tires (more than 80%)
Both axles were re-machined using original German CV joints and boots, not the crappy "other ones"
Shifter bushings etc
All new brakes (Pagid), calipers and German rotors, new wheel bearings, new master and slave cylinders.
Ernst muffler (no leaks or squeaks)
Bmw fuel lines with crucial parts replaced
Water pump (german) and various water hoses (some silicone)
Belts
Recent clutch
Tune up parts air filter (all oem)
Front heater motor replaced
Pinkleton windshield and all windows have new rubber seals.
Sink faucet (adjustable flow)
Headlights upgraded to Euro beam H4 with relay
Perimeter sensing, Clifford alarm system
All new motor mounts
Have complete oem decal kit which I will put on asap

Needs: Only thing that it could use is; some of the heater control cables are inop and the rear heater works fine but has been blocked off, I assume because it was leaking. I have been just occasionally adjusting the heater valve by hand as required, it's above the spare tire in the front.

Note: The interior was pretty dirty so is going in for an interior detailing tomorrow, when it's done I'll provide full interior photos, one or two days. Meanwhile, this is a good description of it's condition.

Interior is all original and generally in good shape. Front seats have no tears, dash, door panels no cracks, headliner, carpet, appliance surfaces all good, paint on the front of the stove is not perfect. Rear compartment pad is good, as well as the upper sleeping pad and cover. Pop top canvas is good but not perfect and the screens have some repairs... quite usable. All kitchen components work great, I have modified the fridge with a new cooling fan, and also replaced the city water outlet with an outward exhausting fan. This can be reversed to allow use for city water supply if wished, the hoses are still in place. Both tables are there and I have nearly a full set of original curtains. I haven't used them so not sure if any are missing but there's a pile of them ;-).

Needs: Two of the interior side panels have de-lamination, could stand to be replaced if you want a mint interior. Also, the bottom cushion upholstery on rear seat is worn, original cloth is available and it's not difficult to re-upholster the (square) rear cushions.

Paint is recent and was done very nicely. The van has been in a desert climate for most of it's life and it's basically rust free. There was a small amount of body damage that was repaired one side (forget which?) and the surface rust was eliminated and treated properly. Van was "blocked out" (primer) several times, the final time by myself to make sure it was as good as possible, and I personally removed all old and cracked seam sealer myself and re-applied good 2k seam sealer. As an indication of how rust free the van was, there's a pic of one window which had an old leaky seal on it and the rust there was very minimal and removed. The area where the "hook ups" are was absolutely rust free as well as the rust prone down on the side of the van down below the hook up ports. Original paint was Terra Cotta brown (ugh) and I just could not bring myself to put that (imo) ugly color back on there. The interior of the van is still original brown, I did not strip out the interior for repainting. The "jams" were done tastefully with clean transition from old to new paint lines. Colors are Porsche Rein Orange and beetle (convertible only) Harvest Moon. I currently can't get my bluetooth to work to upload the photo of the bare window frame, will keep trying.

This amounts to 100% disclosure on my part to the absolute best of my ability. I do not know of ANY other issues/areas that need attention on this Westy. The work was done, about half by myself and half by the two afore mentioned mechanics. I've taken the van on various trips and I know it quite well, I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to mechanical condition of my vehicles, what needed to be done has been done except for the afore mentioned items above. Any questions welcome, I can provide a phone number as well. Please check back occasionally if you bid for updates to the description in case I forgot anything... they are added to the very end of the description so you might not notice unless you look, thanks.

Editors' Picks August 2021 | Honda Civic, Mercedes S-Class and more

Thu, Sep 9 2021

This month of Editors' Picks saw us award the honor to a couple of redesigned stalwarts like the Honda Civic and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Plus, a new crossover that splits the difference between the compact and subcompact class takes home the prize. On top of this, we'll introduce you to a new term: midcompact. We'll be using this to describe those in-between crossovers that are a tad too small to be considered compact, but too large to neatly fit into the subcompact class. For a few examples of these "midcompact" cars, we'll point you to the Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos and VW Seltos. In case you missed our previous Editors' Picks posts, here’s a quick refresher on whatÂ’s going on here. We rate all the new cars we drive with a 1-10 score. Cars that are exemplary in their respective segments get EditorsÂ’ Pick status. Those are the ones weÂ’d recommend to our friends, family and anybody whoÂ’s curious and asks the question. The list that youÂ’ll find below consists of every car we rated in August that earned an EditorsÂ’ Pick. 2021 Genesis G70 2022 Genesis G70 View 26 Photos Quick take: Genesis hits all the right buttons with its G70. It's attractive, fun to drive and can be had for a fair price. Enthusiasts should give it a shot before taking home one of its German competitors. Score: 8 What it competes with: Alfa Romeo Giulia, Lexus IS, Acura TLX, Infiniti Q50, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Cadillac CT4, Volvo S60 Pros: Sharp handler, stunning exterior looks, strong engines Cons: Average interior, loses manual option, small backseat and trunk From the editors: News Editor Joel Stocksdale — "I was already a big fan of the Genesis G70. It has brilliant handling, and the twin-turbo V6 is a beast. It's even a bargain against the competition. And Genesis just made it look a lot better. I wish they'd done a bit more to update the interior, but it's still not a bad cabin. Besides, you won't think too much about it when you're hustling down a fun back road." Features Editor James Riswick — "Yes, it is small, but in a sport sedan segment where "sport" means increasingly less, the G70 still delivers (in part because of that smallness).

Ten of the greatest Super Bowl car commercials of all time

Thu, Jan 28 2016

With an average of over 100 million viewers each year, the Super Bowl always has advertisers bringing out the big guns. And for those among us who don't know the difference between a safety and a touchback, those commercials can be one of the most compelling aspects of the annual ritual. Car companies, in particular, have a long history of making the most of the huge Super Bowl audience by debuting some of the most memorable advertisements that have ever aired on television. So, in preparation for the new batch we'll be seeing this coming Sunday, here's a collection of our favorites from the past. 10. Audi – The Godfather When Audi created this homage to the quintessential gangster movie to promote its newest sports car, the company managed to make a commercial that was simultaneously funny, a little bit disturbing, and most importantly memorable. 9. Maserati – Strike This one might start out slow, but it delivers not only with the wicked sound of the third-generation Ghibli's engine, but with an interesting message about hubris in the auto industry as well. 8. Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo – Dream Directed by none other than Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien), this dystopian spot has centers around a narrator who explains that in his dream the bad guys are unable to catch him despite their best efforts by way of street bikes, race cars, and supersonic jets. While the twin-turbocharged 300ZX car was certainly a performance powerhouse to be reckoned with in its day, the concept and execution of this one does come off a little bit campy now – but in a good way. Then again, it is a dream, after all. 7. General Motors – Robot This one is unique in that it's genuinely depressing on a profound level. Who would've thought that the simulated suicide of a lovable, anthropomorphic car-building robot who has fallen on hard times could be such a downer? 6. Nissan – With Dad Although the debut season of its new LMP1 racer didn't exactly turn out how the team hoped it would, there's no denying that Nissan's depiction of a strained father-and-son relationship that eventually leads to redemption (and the introduction of the 2016 Maxima) tugs at the heartstrings. 5. Volkswagen – Big Day A surprisingly poignant advert, this one might be low on dialogue but it certainly gets its message across. And just as the dramatic soundtrack begins to lull the viewer into a sense of security, our expectations are upended. 4.

Silverado HD, Touareg V10 TDI face off in diesel tug-of-war

Sun, 30 Dec 2012

A couple weeks ago, we watched a Chevrolet Silverado get dominated by a Dodge Ram Heavy Duty in a fullsize pickup tug-of-war, but in that truck's defense, Chevy's Vortec gas engine was no match for the torquey Cummins turbo diesel. For our next round of vehicular tug-of-war, a Duramax-powered Silverado HD takes on Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI.
Now, on paper, putting the Duramax V8's 365 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque up against the V10's 310 hp and 553 lb-ft looks like an easy win for the Bowtie, but unfortunately, this battle has a similar result as the Dodge versus Chevy video, with the Silverado smoking its tires trying to move forward as it gets pulled backwards. Put another way: YouTube 2, Chevy Silverado 0.
It just goes to show, though, that big tires, bolt-on fender flares and goofy smoke stacks don't improve your towing abilities. Besides, what did the Silverado driver expect when the Touareg V10 TDI has towed a Boeing 747 in the past?
